For those who can't find the update ...
Go to http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/x11.html Click on the link labelled "Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) or Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)" to go to http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/x11-104.html Click on Intel to get to the 2.3.1 download at http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/x11-104-Intel.html Click on PowerPC Mac to get to the relevant downloads at http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/x11-104-PPC.html - but 2.3.1 is currently only available for the German version. ActivePerl 5.8.8 (Mac OS X)
Ok, what am I missing here. Here is a free download of a branded version of Perl. Perl is a standard part of Mac OS X. Why would I want to download a non standard Perl installation? [alert admin]

Phynchronicity 1.0 (Mac OS X)
This is an interesting app, but I can't see what it adds over Fink Commander - except perhaps the shareware fee, where FC is free. This is yet another example of a shareware equivalent of an established freeware app. [alert admin]

StuffIt Expander 10.0 (Mac OS X)
According to a post on Mac Fixit there is a fix to work around the problem with the instant crash feature that Version 10 has been blessed with. http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2005091508055730 1) Go to System Preferences -> Network 2) On the TCP/IP panel (for built in ethernet) click on the IPv6 options and set to automatic 3) Run Stuffit and turn off version checking 4) Turn IPv6 back to "off" [optional] Aparantly this is a know "issue" that Allume are allegedly "dealing with." MAMP 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
The installer happily installed the app in it's folder into the system Applications folder. But the app won't run - it whinges that it has to be in it's folder in the Apps folder - it is. This is supposedly a bug fixed with this version. [alert admin]

Virtue 0.5r2 (Mac OS X)
I must be missing something as the pager won't display. Pretty much seems to be a rip off of Desktop Manager - except that DM works. I have to say I am monumentally underwhelmed by this :o( [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 4.5 (Mac OS X)
Has anyone else noticed that the output volume of 4.5 has drastically dropped? I now have to have the volume slider at about 50% across to get the level of sound I used to get (with 4.2) at a fraction in - the max volume is also very low. [alert admin]

Glad Netscpe is not dead..sure it is
Safari is a mess - timeout is too short and most functionality of proper modern browsers is missing. Safari's only redeeming feature is that it is not Internet Exploder.

In addition to the ClamXAV Sentry mentioned by another poster, there is also a Contextual Menu Plugin that allows you to scan an item selected in the Finder by crtl-clicking (or right clicking if you have a mulit-button mouse.) There is also a schedule function to autoscan at a specified time or day.

There might not be any viruses, worms, rootkits etc that affect Macs - but it is irresponsible to ignore them if you are on a mixed network or use email. A Mac can still be a carrier for the viruses etc that affect Windoze machines.

I've been using 2.0 since the first candidate release - with virtually no problems at all. My extensions all work fine, thanks to prompt updates from the authors of the Nightly Build Tools extension. I have had 1.5 fall over on me many times, and 2.0 has (so far) only fallen over twice here at work and only once at home. In all three instances 2.0 was able to restore the sessions exactly where I was…

Likewise 10 crashes out before doing anything with archives, OS X 10.3.9 I installed it in parallel with stuffit 9 - so all I need to do is trash the useless "update" as 9 is still there.
