TapeDeck 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Doesn't capture internal audio ![]()

Simple enough interface, didn't see how to change input sources (maybe you have to do this in the System Prefs). Tried to record streaming radio from iTunes but got silence, so no use for me. [alert admin]

Good for seeing text, not for finding characters ![]()

Attractive application which is especially good for someone who wants to see what a text style looks like for a headline. Not very good for someone who wants to find out what the key combination is for that special character they need. Oddly, shows all the icon fonts (Carta, Commercial PI, etc.) with the proper icons, but doesn't display Zapf Dingbats, the one I use the most! Doesn't have edit menu enabled, so you can't copy a character and paste into your document either (which would have been a good workaround for not showing the keyboard). Comes close, but ,sigh, no cigar. [alert admin]

Acquisition 106.3 (Mac OS X)
Greatest P2P App that just doesn't work ![]()

Acquisition has an excellent interface, is well designed, displays tons of files, and offers you split-offs, related artists and memory-joggers...but won't download worth a damn. Boy I wish it would work better. But Limewire, that klunky interface-hell of a program, just finds a lot more files that you can actually download. I don't know what it is, I'll find a file that has a good reliability rating and have up to 20 active hosts, and I'll still get maybe 45K (or nothing at all) before it gives up and shows "no active sources". To beat it all, I have an extra-fast cable connection and I'm acting as an Ultrapeer for the network. Hell, other users have better luck uploading from my computer than I do downloading from anyone else's. Obviously they're not using Acquisition. There's no documentation or tips either, though the author does rant occasionally on an Acquisition Forum board. I have had no reliability issues with my installs, though. It always boots and runs fine. It just isn't good for the purpose for which it was written. It's back to Limewire. Too bad. [alert admin]

This is NOT shareware. It is a commercial application which cannot be used unless you unlock it with a password. Ther is no demo. You can't even see the application unless you buy it first. The 30-day guarantee is worthless if you only want to evaluate a product. The author is too lazy to write a time-disabling function into the software, and you should not encourage him by going along with his scheme. Don't download this stupid product. Shareware should be free to try. Otherwise why not just go to a store? [alert admin]

After updating OS-X, 1.0.7 showed only an X and tooltip showed "could not log into gmail." I tried 1.0.8 but it's disabled too. Guess it's Apple's fault after all. Bummer. We'll have to wait for another update from GMail Status for this, or maybe a Growl update.

Stupid of this reviewer to give a good product one star because he thinks it isn't compatible with one service out of 5 (and he's wrong to boot). Skews the rating needlessly. This is a 4.5-star product, and free!

No doubt the inability to retain previous slideshows is the developer's way of fixing the bug that crashed previous versions. In the earlier version, moving any image files after creating a slideshow necessitated the cumbersome deletion of JPEGDeux's plist files. While I'm happy I don't have to throw out plists anymore, it's too bad they didn't fix the unstable app itself.

No doubt the inability to retain previousl slideshows is the developer's way of fixing the bug that crashed previous versions if you moved any images after creating a slideshow, necessitating the cumbersome deletion of JPEGDeux's plist files. While I'm happy I don't have to throw out plists anymore, it's too bad they didn't fix the unstable app itself.
