Adding to my reply below, as a filter it seems to be more accurate than Spam Sieve, which is a great filter. Spam Sieve used to be over 95% accurate for me. Right now it is 87.3% accurate. Purify on the other hand seems to work wonderfully. The downside is that it does not behave like a traditional Mac application and the interface is not that "Mac-like." It also requires a bit more work by the user in terms of configuring and setting up the software. For me it is working great, and I have already received numerous "Thank you" notes from ISP providers, encouraging me to report more of the Spam that I receive. Filters do nothing in terms of fighting the actual spam problem. They help in getting one's Inbox clean, but don't go to the root of the problem. For that, a reporting tool is necessary. I've used many reporting tools, and my current choice is Purify. Additionally, support is excellent. [alert admin]

Logitech Control Center 2.4.0 (Mac OS X)
I was reading today about all the problems with LCC and Leopard. I checked my version of LCC and it is 2.4.0. It's working fine for me under Leopard 10.5.2. I ran into many problems with 10.5 and 10.5.1, so I did a clean install of 10.5 with the respective upgrades to 10.5.2. Again, I have no problems with LCC. In fact, I like it better than the versions I tried (and deleted) in previous years. [alert admin]

Pixelmator 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)
Indeed it is useless with many files. It was unusable for me with some JPEGs that were over 1 MB. The problem has existed for months. Apparently it was going to be fixed with OS X 10.5.2 and Pixelmator 1.1, but it is still unusable with these files. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.6 (Mac OS X)
After using Omniweb since it came out and having it as my main browser, these days I use Firefox and Safari which has dramatically improved. OmniWeb kept crashing, for months I sent dozens of Crash Reports to the support ninjas but only got automated responses. Finally I see a new beta. In addition to the crashes, it stopped working with some websites. It was painfully slow when accessing Amazon on my system. I like (or liked) OMNI as a company, and their support has typically been superb. Lately the company seems to be heading in a different direction. Their software is overpriced and does not perform as well as alternatives in some cases, not to mention the exorbitant upgrade fees as is the case of Omni Graffle Pro. Fortunately there are alternatives out there. It's a shame. I have purchased most of their software, and have recommended it to friends and colleagues. These days I tend to use other programs instead of the ones by Omni. The only exception is Omni Graffle since I have not found a good replacement for it. [alert admin]

iView MediaPro 1.0.8076.0 (Mac OS X)
iView was great when it was a $25 program. After that it was overpriced. Microsoft actually made it affordable to many people with their recent promotions. I don't know about tricking people into installing Silverfish. I've seen the option to install it, I read about it and decided NOT to install. Version numbers are quite easy to find. I went to About Expression Media and I have 1.0.2 (9038). Microsoft's website states: "If Expression Media SP1 is already installed, the following version number appears: Microsoft Expression Media Service Pack 1 Version: 1.0.2 (9038)" The full text is here and can be reached by clicking "About Service Pack 1" on the Microsoft Expression Media Download page: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=941834 [alert admin]

Speed Download 5.0 (Mac OS X)
For people actually interested in the software, do yourself a favor and read the reviews. Most of the negative ratings have more to do with people who purchased the MacHeist bundle being pissed-off at Yazsoft as a company, and little to do with the software itself. My own experience with Yazsoft has been positive. I have used SpeedDownload since version 1, before it became a Yazsoft product. My last paid upgrade was for version 4. After trying version 5, I see no reason to upgrade. I finally used SpeedDownload 5 last night to download over 6 GB of data. Without checking every feature, I was surprised by a few things: 1. The toolbar is now more limited. It does not have the option to Hold or Queue downloads. I can choose these options via contextual menus, but it was faster for me to use the toolbar. 2. The new Floater takes up too much space as is fugly. I prefer the old one since it's unobtrusive and is independent of SpeedDownload's main window. 3. My downloads had a constant speed of >800 K/s. After selecting 4 new files to download, it suddenly changed to about 6 K/s. I figured out that the "slider that looks like a volume control" would fix this. It changed a couple of times by itself, and I had to manually select unlimited each time. A very minor issue is that the pop-up help when I place the cursor over the bandwidth "square" at the bottom left of SpeedDownload's window it pops up the same information as the one for the upload queue. After using SD since version 1, I am actually NOT interested in this upgrade. My experience with Yazsoft has been positive, and SpeedDownload has been an essential part of my system for many years, but I definitely prefer SD 4. As always, YMMV. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Needs improvement, but it's not that bad ![]()

It's always interesting to read comments bashing Microsoft (including the typical $ instead of S), regardless of the accuracy of the comments. Office 2008 (12.0) was released. It had bugs. Some have been fixed. More will be fixed as long as people report them to Microsoft. Since it was announced over a year ago that there will be no support for VBA with this version, I also kept my 2004 version. This was no surprise, although it is a shame. I have not used Office 2008 extensively, but I have found no stability problems, launch speed seems adequate at 10 seconds or so per application, and I have had no crashes with any application. iWork applications launch faster, at 6 seconds or so on my system. I began posting comments for each application, but the post became too long. So just to address the previous review: I can open Events in Entourage by double-clicking. For one Event I was asked whether I wanted to open all events or a single occurrence given that it was a recurring event. I had no problems opening it. For another Event, I double-clicked and it opened. I'm considering an Event as an appointment or occurrence on my calendar. The "STUPID Elements Gallery toolbar" is quite useful and a time-saver for many tasks, and people can add their custom Elements. Definitely a time-saver for many. The toolbar is almost 5 millimeters in height in my display, or just a bit taller than my cursor. A little less than 2% of the screen space occupied by Word on my system, and shorter than a regular toolbar. I would like to have an option to remove it or add it as I do with other toolbars, but I would not call it "a giant waste of screen real estate" especially since it expands and contracts with a single mouse click. Microsoft has a long list of known issues with the 2008 version, which people can find here: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/help.mspx Despite the loss of VBA, it has been a decent upgrade. So far PowerPoint has allowed me to view presentations that used to crash with 2004. Entourage has issues with rules and categories that have been easily fixed. I've opened large documents with Word, 1 and 2 MB in size, as fast as Pages but Pages messed up the formatting. I opened a 2 MB Excel file with 56 Charts and many Megaformulas and it worked smoothly. Overall, my INITIAL impressions are positive in spite of the current issues with Office 2008. I decided to post this "early" review to give current and/or potential users a different perspective. My rating for the price is based on the promo I used. Microsoft has offered some serious discounts, even making the Special Media Edition available for around $40. Too bad I missed that one! If you need VBA, keep a copy of Office 2004. [alert admin]

OmniGraffle Pro 5.0 (Mac OS X)
I agree with jackmac1313. The upgrade price is quite high. I have used Omni Graffle Pro since version 3, and gladly upgraded to version 4 Pro. I'm certainly not upgrading this time. [alert admin]

Starry Night 6.2.3 (Mac OS X)
I'm using the Pro Plus version thanks to a sale and very reasonable upgrades, but I've also used more limited versions many years ago and was happy with them. The updater has worked perfectly for me with version 6. The recommendation below is good. Celestia is free so give it a try. As far as I know Celestia lacks many of the features available in Starry Night, such as telescope control for example. Starry Night has a level of detail that I did not find in Celestia, both in terms of number and quality of the objects included, as well as the information provided for each object. This is not meant to put down Celestia. It's great and it's free, but just from briefly using 1.5 it pales in comparison to Starry Night. And Starry Night has a button aptly named Spaceship. You can travel with a joystick or a keyboard. Unfortunately I don't know how my version compares with the Pro and Enthusiast versions. [alert admin]

Readiris Pro 11.6.2 (Mac OS X)
I had trouble with the auto-update feature as well. I contacted the company using their online form. They also provide a support email address. Within a few minutes they sent me a link to the new version. I have not used the software since version 11.0.3, but when I used it it saved me many hours of work. It was fast and highly accurate. It was certainly not perfect, but great for my needs. When I give this new version a try I'll post a review. For now, and given the current low ratings, here are some links that may have less biased opinions in case anyone is considering this software: http://www.akappleug.org/reviews/2007/04/10/readiris-pro-11-corporate-edition/ http://www.techcastnetwork.co.uk/2007/03/30/readiris-pro-11-for-mac/ http://www.applelinks.com/index.php/more/review_readiris_11/ (This is 2 years old) [alert admin]

Just an update. After doing a clean install of Leopard Spam Sieve's accuracy is a bit under 83%. I know that with training it will get better. Purify is working wonderful as a filter. It takes more effort to set it up, but it's worth it.

Needs improvement, but it's not that bad
Just to give you a quick update, and a few caveats. 1. I have not used the programs extensibly. It will take me a few months to do so :-) 2. I've used mostly Entourage, and have found the following issues: - Categories were not assigned to the folders that I imported from Entourage. Assigning categories is quick and easy. - Rules were imported, but I've had to re-select some folders in order for the rule to work. Easy…

This is becoming a trend with a certain group of developers...
I guess there's more money to be made running MacHeist than developing great software. iClip was promising but falls short when compared to alternatives. MacHeist seems to be a hit. Perhaps John is more focused on that project. More money by being a middle man instead of a serious developer. I'm guilty of purchasing iClip, Disco, and AppZapper which is the only one that is not as bad. But I have learned my lesson and have avoided…

lfees1, are you serious when you write "As you can tell from Ian's response they truly "Get It""? In spite of the fact that this is your only post here at VersionTracker, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and will consider you an honest and independent supporter of Softpress. When you say "They are far and away the most reasonable and considerate software company with whom I have ever worked - and I've been a…

They're different. SpamSieve will filter your spam and place it on a folder. It lacks a user interface, and it is very accurate. 98.9% in my case. I've just used Purify for a couple of weeks, mostly to report spam, but not to filter it. Previously I had used Sp@mX for this purpose, and it was great. A few criticisms: -The interface is not Mac-like both in terms of look and behavior. For example, clicking on the "Close"…

Supposedly the situation with Entourage will change later this year. By then maybe Daylite will be improved. Or perhaps even Chandler will be a viable alternative at that time :-) http://chandler.osafoundation.org/ I’m not too critical of Microsoft. For the most part I’m happy with Office, and the suite represents a lot of bang for the buck. Years ago I contacted support and they quickly solved the issues I was experiencing. It’s certainly not perfect, but for my…

Better is a bit subjective in this case. For people with very basic Project Management needs, who want an easy to use, intuitive application, OP seems to be a great choice. The Omni people make great looking, useful programs, that are both powerful and intuitive. Since this is a version 1 software, it may lack some features such as managing multiple projects with shared resources. Merlin 2, on the other hand, is a mature program developed by…
