VideoDrive 1.7.3 (Mac OS X)

iTunes imports QuickTime mov

Before I tried this VideoDrive, I decided to try and import QuickTime mov format used by YouTube. iTunes handled the import of 50 QT videos all at once with no complaint. So if your hard drive space is limited, try iTunes first for your needs. [alert admin]

LilyPond 2.8.0-1 (Mac OS X)

Lilypond why?

This program makes minimal use of a GUI. Writing music by coding by the user is a step backwards in ease of use. Save up $70 for Harmony Assistant 9.1x if you need a pain free route to printing your music. I tried compiling 3 of the coded example and 2 had errors in the Web page examples. Just looking at the examples with all the abstract coding leaves me cold. Eric [alert admin]

LaCie SilverKeeper 1.1.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

SilverKeeper backups

SilverKeeper is easy to use and tech support is fast to answer any questions. I’ve backed up and restored with SilverKey 1.1.2 and though backups aren’t my favorite weekend job, I look forward to using the new V 1.1.4. SilverKeeper is a clever name as you can save your money instead of buying high priced backup SW. I don’t work for Lacie either. Eric [alert admin]

Temperature Monitor 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Temperature Monitor - 2.5

Great product. Easy to use. I have Temperature Monitor - 2.5 on my Mac G3 (3 hard drives) and usually the temperature is 98.6 ºF (you can set it to show the temperature in degrees centigrade or Kelvin). We are in San Mateo, CA and the room temperature is now 77ºF. When I have my whole iPhoto library open, the temperature rises to 102ºF. When put to sleep, the the Mac temperature falls to around 80ºF. If you like to monitor things this is for you. Harmony Assistant 8.4.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

A composer and arrangers dream

Harmony Assistant is easy to use. Once you set up the tools you need most, you can move them around for easy use. The interface is simple and allows the custom setup. I started using Harmony Assistant a year ago. The interface is intuitive and only a bare minimum of the great manual is needed. Harmony Assistant allowed me to write and arrange 22 bebop tunes and burn to 3 CDs in 11 months without touching any instrument. This looks like a good teaching tool too. The only software close to Harmony Assistant costs $$$. This utility for music production should have been a part of Garage Band instead of the crippled virtual keyboard in GB. Harmony Assistant exports AIFF files that are easy to drag and drop into GB. The printouts of the scores are great. Some of the instrument sounds of Gold database such as the sax can be improved by adding a slight reverb with the sound effects of Harmony Assistant. The authors are very responsive and helpful for tech support. Eric [alert admin]

Reckless Driving 1.42 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Great game for…

safe road violence. Hold down the option-command while starting up allows you to change the level and vehicle type. The default car is the best IMHO. If you change the vehicle number you may crash the program too. Eric [alert admin]

It's kinda cool I guess

Is your body or legs and arm motion (you didn't say) severe enough to disturb your and anyone elses sleep? If yes, you may have periodic leg movement disorder or PLMD. If you Google that you will find help for the condition. This tool would eliminate the need to go to a sleep lab where all kinds of electrodes are attached to you body and you are told to sleep. Yeah, right, being wired…
