QuarkXPress 8.0 (Mac OS X)
The Quark we have, rather than the one we want... ![]()

Downloaded the 60-day trial. Aside from the usability "improvements", this is still Quark 3 under the hood. All the dialog boxes are still the same. You still can zoom in to only 800%. And they still have the friggin alien Easter egg when you command-delete a box! Startup is slow as ever and boy is it fugly. I don't know who designs Quark's icons and other user interface elements, but Office 2008 looks cutting edge in comparison. [alert admin]

I guess this means TechToolPro 5 is still a ways off. [alert admin]

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been using Acrobat 8 since 2007.. and it's already been updated to 8.1.2 [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 6.0 (Mac OS X)
After the first backup routine, subsequent scans are almost instantaneous. You have to try Fast Scan to believe it. Next up (I hope): improving the UI. [alert admin]

Adobe InDesign CS3 5.0.2 (Mac OS X)
I'm surprised that Leopard users of InDesign CS3 aren't up in arms about its disappearing act. This seems to have nothing to do with Spaces, which I have turned off. Specifically, InDesign documents disappear when opening them and one must force quit InDesign and restart the program to see them. When this happens, InDesign still appears in the dock, but clicking on it does nothing. This behavior doesn't happen right away; usually it happens on the third or forth doc opening. Using the Open dialog box instead of double-clicking the file helps, but doesn't eliminate the problem. I have experienced this problem with InDesign CS3 on every Leopard Mac I have used, Intel or G5, even on a new user with no cache or extensions. But wait, there's more! When you have a document open, it is impossible to hide it when you're in other programs or the Finder. "Hide Others" doesn't work with InDesign CS3 in Leopard. The only solution is to minimize your InDesign docs into the dock. [alert admin]

Toast Titanium 9.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Why can't Roxio make a friggin updater?! Each new version is another 200 MB DMG of the whole folder of Toast apps. The program is great, btw. [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 5.1.3 (Mac OS X)
Highly Recommended, but Not for Babies ![]()

Sync Pro doesn't get as much press as other products that create bootable backups, but it is far better than one-trick ponies like SuperDuper. I highly recommend Sync Pro and use it on a daily basis to synchronize files between home and work computers.
Schwatoo states that the interface is a little fussy, which is true, and the options can require some trial and error. But I've rarely had a problem that wasn't of my own doing (like the time I backed up to a drive instead of from it), and when an incompatibility does crop up, such as with a new version of the OS like Leopard, the developer is very responsive.
I'm surprised that Schwatoo couldn't find a pre-5.1 installer. It almost sounds like he was looking for an excuse to switch to something else. Did he email the developer to ask for an older version that isn't posted on the download page? How is it fraud that the developer only offers the most compatible, up-to-date version of his software for download? Besides, two-year renewals are only $50.

Badia Exportools for InDesign 1.1 (Mac OS X)
There is a need for additional export options for InDesign, but InDesign already exports in the formats Badia's product "automates". How about "Save as Illustrator CS3", or "Save as Photoshop CS3", with layers? Or how about being able to convert Illustrator and PDF files to InDesign CS3? [alert admin]

Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.1.0 (Mac OS X)
In order for the updater to work, your copy of Acrobat must be named "Adobe Acrobat Professional". I don't understand why an updater would require proper naming of the program it is updating, but this occurred with the Illustrator CS2 updater as well. [alert admin]

No, take it back. the problem still exists and no, the documents aren't moving to a new space. And if they were moving to a new space, even though Spaces is turned off, that would be just as bad.

I wrote that "The 5.0.3 update in combination with the 10.5.4 update, both released today (July 1, 2008), appear to solve the hiding issues." By July 2, I realized I spoke too soon. Two months later (September 3) I can say that InDesign's Disappearing Act is just as bad as ever. I wonder if PC users have this problem.

There's a lot Quark can't do, but drag and drop text has been implemented, just not by default. In preferences, under "Input Settings", there's a check box for Drag and Drop Text.

WHEN DID QXP JUMP-THE-SHARK™ ???
You're right, S&E. Remember when Quark charged extra for the PPC-native version when everyone else included 68K and PPC versions for the same price? Version 6 is so bad I cringe every time I have to use it. And don't get me started on the folly of "projects" containing multiple "layouts"!

I tried FAP for a while and found it hopelessly slow with large numbers of fonts. Explorer, on the other hand, is in a whole other league. It is the first OSX font manager that surpasses ATM.

There is a Microsoft Office fonts folder, so it's possible that turning off the fonts in Explorer doesn't work because there are duplicates of the fonts here. Check Applications > Microsoft Office 2004 > Office > Fonts. The same is true with Adobe.

If Meridian Alarm Clock is what you're looking for, then also consider iClock . It has the added option of tracking stocks, which is pretty handy; otherwise both apps are pretty similar (iClock is $20).
