StatPlus:mac 4.8 (Mac OS X)

You could be a student or teacher of statistics, an academic on a budget, a budding researcher. Statmac Plus is worth your time to explore. In the real world much data lives inside Excel (or can be exported to it -- especially if you have to work with M$ Access). If you do not want to export your data to other programmes for statistical analysis and would like to work within Excel, you should look at StatMac Plus. Its only real competitor is XLSTAT which is good but expensive and has withdrawn support for next versions of Excel on the Mac (due to dropping of visual Basic functionality in Office 2008 by its inventors Microsoft). So realistically StatMac is your only hope. This does not deter the software from being very competent and increasingly fast and easy to use. The interface is quite simple but little awkward and requires some getting used to. The time investment is no greater than exporting Excel data to another programme. All the usual options are there and work well. The developers are very responsive and have taken the programme to new performance levels with each update and have promised more. For teachers of statistics and lone researchers StatMac is highly recommended. There are price options for those on a budget. [alert admin]

CopyPaste Pro 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Not Ready Yet but worth investing in
I have been using Macs almost since 1984 and for me when this programme became available it defined what was different about this platform and why Macs were better. I have used it ever since it became available and have gladly paid for it in its previous version and ALSO the new version simply to thank the developer, to acknowledge Copypaste and to support / wish the developer well ! BUT, like may previous posts, I am finding this version extremely flawed at this stage for public release. I am using PPC 17 in laptop running 10.4.11. To start with, in a very reproducible way, on my computer, this programme 'looses' the saved clips on restart and then 'finds' them on logging out and logging back in. This is only the beginning. I can not erase the original clips supplied with the programme, and they always reappear on logging out and logging back in. These are annoying imperfections in a software that many have much respect and fondness for, rendering it unusable due to unreliability. On my part even after paying for the new version, I have reverted to the 2.7.5 which is working fine on my configeration. I wish Copy paste and its developer well. But perhaps it is not ready for public release yet. Like many others, I await further development. Sincere Best Wishes [alert admin]

Graph Sketcher 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Do not underestimate Graph Sketcher. There are no words to describe how good it is. Just because it is uncomplicated and affordable does not mean it is not very powerful and useful with an intuitive interface. This is the sort of software that Apple Mac was made for. If you are an academic with a Mac you can do yourself more than a favour by trying Graph Sketcher and discovering how you can use its simple but excellent capabilities to strengthen your communications. It can be great teaching aid. You would easily spend 10 times its cost if a company Adobe or Microsoft ever managed to think of and develop anything like Graph Sketch. I wish they would add more types of graphing capability (using a free hand input to translate into pie charts and bar graphs) to make it even more useful. [alert admin]

Path Finder 4.8.4 (Mac OS X)
Unfair and undeserved criticism ![]()

I was disappointed to see the undeserved and unfair criticism of this excellent software that is much better and more advanced than Finder in many many ways. It has virtually all the advanced functionality that a power-user could wish to have and Apple have never managed to provide in one place. For the inexperienced user, Pathfinder has provided a comprehensive interface with endless customisation options. Try before you buy, but allow yourself time to discover the software. Version tracker really should be used to post a balanced comment. People around the world depend on these as source of fair and honest advice. On my computer PathFinder has never crashed or caused a problem. I have nearly 400 programmes installed. I am Mac user since 1989. [alert admin]

CCN X 3.24 (Mac OS X)
I have used this programme and watched its progress for 2 years. I am impressed with the distance it has covered and the hard work that the developer has put into it. CCN X was quite good in 2005 and is probably the best in class now, delivering the full range of options to manage the working week with an easy interface with Apple software including iCal etc. The functionality is 'awesome' and CCN X has matured nicely. It definitely deserves a serious trial for the breadth and quality of its features. [alert admin]

Screenflick 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Forget the rest ! Try the Best !! ![]()

Let me declare right in the beginning that I have no contact with the developers. I have not been rewarded from these comments. Not even offered a discount on their license registration fee. Screenflick is an absolutely first class application that should really be bundled with new Apple Macs. It is elegant and powerful, works as promised and does the job without requiring a computer degree for the user. It has come along at exactly the right time when many people wish to carry the best moments from their DVDs and other sources on their laptop hard drive. It is always nice to see an expensive (near) monopoly challenged competently. Over priced competitors will need to look at their service record to understand why there could be a migration of their customer base to this brilliant software (Screenflick). Compare the price between SnapZ Pro and Screenflick and Also compare the functionality before spending your hard earned money. By the way, if your disk space disappears after using Screenflick remember to delete movie in the file menu, because the programme retains the original recording in case you want to change the size of the output (perhaps a future version could provide an option in the preferences to delete the movie automatically if this is what the user wants). Otherwise nearly perfect for its stated purpose and a LOT more. [alert admin]

Missing Sync for Palm OS 6.0.1b4 (Mac OS X)
Colossal Waste of Time. Not Ready for Sale. Not even Beta
As numerous feedback messages here and Mark / Space forums will confirm, the missing sync is simply not performing even to a very low expectation. Like many others I have spent endless hours on the computer and even ended up erasing and reinstalling the Mac itself (not to mention countless times of hard reset on the Treo 680) Most reasonable people will make allowance for bugs in a new version and will understand the need to 'test' the software in real life. Also the recent changes in Mac OS / Palm system software must make it difficult to deliver on the promised functionality. BUT for something to simply not do what it advertises and you pay your hard earned money for must be unacceptable and perhaps illegal. Mark Space do injustice to their customers by taking money for software that they know is not ready (read the forums), without clear notice and at least a discounted price (after all they are really beta testing the software). If I had a dollar for every hour wasted after purchasing the latest version I would have a lot of money (and much more than what I paid for the software). The latest Missing Sync version 6.0.15b is not even a decent 'nearly-ready' beta yet. I have reverted to iSync conduit --despite warnings from Missing Sync. It certainly works better than Mark Space conduits on my system (Power PC 10.4.10). Worth giving a try. Missing Sync 6.0. and above has never worked under bluetooth though version 5 was fine !!! Be warned. And buy at your own risk. I hope you do not feel as frustrated as some others stuck with this. [alert admin]

PageSpinner 5.0b1 (Mac OS X)
The Professional tool that even amateurs can use. Especially recommended for those who are still in the dinosaur age with webauthoring bloatware. Together with map spinner, this is just perfect for the web authors of this century ! Sells at a price that the giant software houses cannot even understand. Do yourself try it (especially if you think Rapid Weaver -- itself a great programme, is not for you) [alert admin]

MapSpinner 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I have been using all the beta versions since this product was launched. It is unparalled in its ease of use and functionality. I was prepared to pay more than its actual price during the beta stages just to get a non-expiring version of Map Spinner ! I am delighted with the launch of the new full version at a very reasonable price (and free to users page spinner). Takes away the dependency on creaky bloatware web authoring programmes. Today (on a saturday) I also experienced great and immediate support. My conclusion : don't leave your (web) home without Map Spinner. Highly recommened for a serious 'spin' !!! [alert admin]

What is 'buzz freak' for one is a conscientious hardworking person to another. Why you should want to use strong disparaging language ('slagging' as we call it in the UK !) against a stranger who has done you no harm is for you to consider and I hope you enjoyment of life is not diminished by it. On your advice I actually bought Bit Pal but had to uninstall and claim a refund because it kept…

No harm in giving Mac Business a spin. You may find that the invoice and correspondence templates are not as refined and professional looking as in MYOB, but the rest of the functionality is excellent at a basic level. Two additional questions you have to ask: 1. What is the data you require for tax purposes / accountant and which software gives it to you in the easiest way. 2. How paranoid do you feel about the…

Twice this week I have posted here. Once in support of someone criticising The office version and now to disagree with the generalisation and inaccurate representation in this post. I note that DevonThink continues to get respect from even those who disagree with it and this software has achieved a unique position through the range of functionality it offers. Even those who criticise it appear to be driven by the disappointment that it does not go…

Slow but Ultimately sure ! In fairness to the original post, the import of emails IS somewhat slow and gives the impression of a hung application (accessing 1500 emails in Apple mail took a looooong time on a PB 17 in 1.67 10.3.9). This delay does not appear to occur in, for example CRM4MAC -which seems to have a more efficient 'import' engine. I force quit the application twice to be sure that it had not crashed.…

You really need to think of a new name for this product or package it separately for non-commercial users as a version that is life enhancing, multitasking, organising software that allows people to track, control and synthesise a number of vital functionalities on their computer. My wife who is an academic just cannot be bothered to try some software that is called CRM (!) when really it is a program that could help her team…

In my humble view, version tracker is probably an inappropriate place for detailed wishlists and discussions about minute functionality of products. Perhaps this is best directed to forums on the developers website or in reply to the original comment here by Mr.Jobs!
Many if not Most people use version tracker to get a sense of what the products claim to do and the comments from users to broadly validate or refute these claims.
Without doubt DEVON…

As a new user to DEVONTHING Pro I find your comments unrepresentative of the power and intuitive usefulness of this software.
Ofcourse you are entitled to consider spotlight support essential for your purposes.
BUT there are other users who find the search / indexing built into DEVONPro much more useful / intuitive.
I am writing simply to balance your comments and to emphasise that the software is literally unique in its value to academic users. Those that…

I am disappointed to see the negative comment posted about this first class and in many ways quite unique software. I have absolutely no affliation with the vendors. I am writing only to correct what I believe to be unrepresentative experience reported by one user. On my 17in powerbook DEVONthink is perfectly stable and working as stated. Do not be put off by the negative comment. Try it over a period of time for yourself. I…

I was hoping that there would be a script that will allow relavent files (only) to be backed up to a DOS disk. Right now I use SYNCHRONIZE for this and SuperDuper for every thing else. I can not see that apart from helping the economy, there is any reason for users to be not offered the choice from within the same and one application. I accept entirely that SuperDuper does very well what it…
