RipIt 1.2.6 (Mac OS X)

Seriously Underpriced

For the price it is a give away. Regularly updated. What it couldn't do yesterday it has happily done today. Excellent. [alert admin]

R10Clean 1.9.7 (Mac OS X)

Sanity Saver

R10Clean goes from strength to strength. If you are engaged in audit or preliminary research of medical, biological, psychological, social, nursing or paramedical data, especially with yes, no, may-be type responses (and other types of nominal data), do yourself a favour and try this software. It is simple but very powerful. Before your tear your hair out on excel, SPSS and the like, you may find that the analysis is much easier after using R10Clean. The developer is very resonsive to user feedback. The recent addition of count occurrances can eliminate at one stroke the need to struggle with VCount and CountIF (or similar) in Excel or to have to do this manually. [alert admin]

DataClean 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Highly recommeded for Bio and Social sciences researchers

This simple but very useful utility is a sanity saver for those who have to tidy up the data before analysis, as in small medical audits and for research in psychology, sociology and bio sciences. The developer is responsive to user feedback. Several of the options in DataClean should be bundled with Excel but are not. [alert admin]

Fantasktik 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Magnifique

Likely to become a Mac Classic. Right price for an elegant useful unobtrusive utility that makes life easier. Belongs to the catagory of software that should be bundled with MacOS. Could be in the same league as Copy paste (old version !!!) and Drag Thing. Highly recommended. Bought within a few minutes of trying it. [alert admin]

MYOB FirstEdge 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Feedback on MYOB flagship software

I have experience of MYOB top of the range software in Europe. Apart from the criticism of their support as mentioned by other reviewers, I think it is necessary for prospective users to be aware of my concerns about some other aspects of how some of MYOB software works. Although I have not used this particular version, I sharing my experience with another of MYOB programmes for those who may be interested to know. I have used the top-of-the-range version of MYOB for many years. It has several undeniable strengths. BUT if you do not belong to MYOB's own network of accountants, you should be very careful for two reasons before buying it. First that the upgrade costs and policies of MYOB are worse than almost any other company or developer in my experience. Second that completely on a random basis MYOB will seek to verify your registration with its website. Apart from being an intrusive, annoying invasion of privacy, I don't know what data about you it sends to MYOB or what the software would do if you did not have the internet connection just at time the MYOB wanted to check your licence. Would you loose all your data? Would you be able to continue your work if you can not establish contact with MYOB over a weekend or holiday? How would their less than the best support system cope with your difficulty? New users should purchase at their own risk because more expereinced ones would know about the above situation. There are many accounting products available for small businesses and non-MYOB network affiliated accountants. [alert admin]

Grammarian PRO X 1.8.3 (Mac OS X)

Works Perfectly

Grammarian is part of the startup on my computer 10.4.11 Used every day all the time. No problems, no slowdowns, no adverse issues other than occasionally a duplication of menu in some programmes, with no impact on functionality. Highly recommended for people who are serious about the quality of their writing. Best Wishes to the developer who continues to support this valuable software. I would be more than happy to purchase the next version upgrade. I am also a licensed user of Spell Catcher but I find Grammarian to be far superior. [alert admin]

AddMovie 1.5.8 (Mac OS X)

focus please

It would be nice for the benefit of Version Tracker users, instead of obsessing about the exceptional licensing arrangements for the software, people would actually focus on the value and quality of it. Needless to say, I believe, this and the suite of related products is worth a lot more than the author requests as a reasonable donation. Best to find out for yourself. I use them regularly and find these are going from strength to strength. [alert admin]

AddMovie 1.5.7 (Mac OS X)

pedantic punctilious pontification

I have seen the feedback about the donation issue for this software and feel compelled to rise to the defense of the developer, who I do not know. Version tracker is a place people visit to find software for their needs and not to learn semantic subtleties. There is much unnecessary criticism of this developer and his suit of excellent software. No one can be in any confusion that they have to pay for this software and the developer offers an option of several fees on a sliding scale depending on how you feel about the software; a little bit like a tip you might leave after a meal in a restaurant. I think it is a good system. Some people use the term donation-ware to get around restrictions that would otherwise raise the cost to unfavorable levels. By the way, we should ask Apple (and Micro$oft) to make their software bug proof and perfect before knocking the little guy doing his work for small rewards in the garage to benefit at least some users. I am more than happy with the suit of the software from this developer that works as promised and deserves the donation that you are comfortable with. [alert admin]

StatPlus:mac 4.8 (Mac OS X)

Maturing nicely and Fills a major gap Recommended

You could be a student or teacher of statistics, an academic on a budget, a budding researcher. Statmac Plus is worth your time to explore. In the real world much data lives inside Excel (or can be exported to it -- especially if you have to work with M$ Access). If you do not want to export your data to other programmes for statistical analysis and would like to work within Excel, you should look at StatMac Plus. Its only real competitor is XLSTAT which is good but expensive and has withdrawn support for next versions of Excel on the Mac (due to dropping of visual Basic functionality in Office 2008 by its inventors Microsoft). So realistically StatMac is your only hope. This does not deter the software from being very competent and increasingly fast and easy to use. The interface is quite simple but little awkward and requires some getting used to. The time investment is no greater than exporting Excel data to another programme. All the usual options are there and work well. The developers are very responsive and have taken the programme to new performance levels with each update and have promised more. For teachers of statistics and lone researchers StatMac is highly recommended. There are price options for those on a budget. [alert admin]

SEVEN STARS

What is 'buzz freak' for one is a conscientious hardworking person to another. Why you should want to use strong disparaging language ('slagging' as we call it in the UK !) against a stranger who has done you no harm is for you to consider and I hope you enjoyment of life is not diminished by it. On your advice I actually bought Bit Pal but had to uninstall and claim a refund because it kept…

Absolutely First Class !

No harm in giving Mac Business a spin. You may find that the invoice and correspondence templates are not as refined and professional looking as in MYOB, but the rest of the functionality is excellent at a basic level. Two additional questions you have to ask: 1. What is the data you require for tax purposes / accountant and which software gives it to you in the easiest way. 2. How paranoid do you feel about the…

REAL WORLD USE

Twice this week I have posted here. Once in support of someone criticising The office version and now to disagree with the generalisation and inaccurate representation in this post. I note that DevonThink continues to get respect from even those who disagree with it and this software has achieved a unique position through the range of functionality it offers. Even those who criticise it appear to be driven by the disappointment that it does not go…

BETA VERSION, AND YOU SEE IT.

Slow but Ultimately sure ! In fairness to the original post, the import of emails IS somewhat slow and gives the impression of a hung application (accessing 1500 emails in Apple mail took a looooong time on a PB 17 in 1.67 10.3.9). This delay does not appear to occur in, for example CRM4MAC -which seems to have a more efficient 'import' engine. I force quit the application twice to be sure that it had not crashed.…

Better than previous reviews

You really need to think of a new name for this product or package it separately for non-commercial users as a version that is life enhancing, multitasking, organising software that allows people to track, control and synthesise a number of vital functionalities on their computer. My wife who is an academic just cannot be bothered to try some software that is called CRM (!) when really it is a program that could help her team…

DT Pro "classification"

In my humble view, version tracker is probably an inappropriate place for detailed wishlists and discussions about minute functionality of products. Perhaps this is best directed to forums on the developers website or in reply to the original comment here by Mr.Jobs!
Many if not Most people use version tracker to get a sense of what the products claim to do and the comments from users to broadly validate or refute these claims.
Without doubt DEVON…

Without Spotlight Support...

As a new user to DEVONTHING Pro I find your comments unrepresentative of the power and intuitive usefulness of this software.

Ofcourse you are entitled to consider spotlight support essential for your purposes.

BUT there are other users who find the search / indexing built into DEVONPro much more useful / intuitive.

I am writing simply to balance your comments and to emphasise that the software is literally unique in its value to academic users. Those that…

Crash city

I am disappointed to see the negative comment posted about this first class and in many ways quite unique software. I have absolutely no affliation with the vendors. I am writing only to correct what I believe to be unrepresentative experience reported by one user. On my 17in powerbook DEVONthink is perfectly stable and working as stated. Do not be put off by the negative comment. Try it over a period of time for yourself. I…

Cloning to Windows

I was hoping that there would be a script that will allow relavent files (only) to be backed up to a DOS disk. Right now I use SYNCHRONIZE for this and SuperDuper for every thing else. I can not see that apart from helping the economy, there is any reason for users to be not offered the choice from within the same and one application. I accept entirely that SuperDuper does very well what it…
