Virex X (.Mac edition) 7.5.1 (Mac OS X)
little chance of sending virus to wintel users
I decided not to upgrade when the mail issues surfaced (still have a v7.0.x install). Thankfully I had no damage. I have to think though that the chances of sending a virus infected email out to anyone, mac or windows, is slim. When a virus message arrives there is not any doubt what it is. If you do happen to pass along games, flash and such from unknown sources then you may be able to infect a windows machine but I am not sure how with the thousands of virus attachments I have seen removed from my site with Postini. Nothing is hidden but the virus is spread when some windows user is duped into opening an unknown message with a subject that should be a tip off by now. Not to mention that the messages come from unknown senders. Just don't do it. I probably should completely remove the virex to avoid any possibility of an issue [alert admin]

Tech Database 2.4 (Mac OS X)
Appears 2.4 is not standalone?
I downloaded (link does spew source) by selecting 'download link as' and upon unstuffing found two files. I do not have FMP beyond v4 so Excel launched. Tried to just use the new Equipment file by adding the .AGR but apparently a different file type (as I noted, not UTD on FMP and how things may work in current app). Great tool, very generous to provide it. Hope to get the standalone update. j.webb [alert admin]

Zoe 0.5.5 (Mac OS X)
Not sure what happened with your download, what your browser, etc. but my download was flawless and left the de-archived Zoe folder where I expect every download via Safari. This file 'Zoe20040210.zip' was placed in my trash per my Safari settings. Maybe this is a different file then you downloaded. Smooth sailing for the download. My brief experience with Zoe (have the accents been removed?) is favorable. Takes up some disk space but I have about 29K messages, 700+ documents, 2000+ names and over 26K urls indexed. Xupport 2.0b10 (Mac OS X)
Read comments and tried anyway
I started to skip but was interested in the ipfw configuration interface. I launched and was in the basic panel for Firewall after looking through other tabs. I do not have Firewall on in system prefs but I selected to enable logging and then to view current rules (apple default for off which allows all). I could not close the window that displayed active rules. The application froze. I never initiated any actions other than those noted. I forced quit the app. I tried to relaunch but it would not respond, only place the icon in the dock after bouncing without the 'active' arrow below. I finally had to force quit again and my persistence crashed the finder and I had to force reboot. I booted single user and journaling replayed but I forced fsck just in case. All seems to work now so no lasting damage. Just suggest caution with my experience and the comments of others. It would be great if it worked without concern. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.3.2 (Mac OS X)
Address Book enhancements are nice...
however, I have killed the finder trying to use the network connect icon. I usually do not use that method as the lack of mounting on the desktop is strange for me. Also, ejecting is too hard. After the finder restarted my next 'glitch' as the Address Book apparently had a crash and offered to send a report of the misbehavior to Apple. I agreed. Seems minimal and maybe it was my tinkering. We shall see. [alert admin]

darkstat 2.6 (Mac OS X)
There are many options to monitor network traffic but the graphic web interface is very nice. Also the information retained can be helpful. I used darkstat previously in Jaguar/10.2.x and am glad to see that it (at least this version for certain) works in Panther 10.3. Simple build and install works with little fuss via the CLI. Net Connections 1.6 (Mac OS X)
I use GeekTool to display connection info with an lsof command but this is a nice little tool. The lookup and host info are easily accessed. A custom icon would be nice. I have selected to keep mine in the dock for now and something 'network' oriented would be visually appealing. Thanks for your work! [alert admin]

PsyncX 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)
Definitely works on my Panther install (It's BAAAACK!)
RonMc, I have a mostly 'stock' install but I have edited my search paths for the terminal. As I recall PsyncX installs the command exactly where you point (and a check of my system confirms). You should be able to run with the path but may need to run as 'sudo' (which you may have). In the past I have used 'cp' or 'mv' to place the command in the root /bin with no problems. For me a quick test of a folder shows it is working. I am ecstatic! I tried to compile the latest version after applying the patch and failed as well as when trying to force the gcc compiler as one tip suggested. psync (and thanks to PsyncX) is indispensable as far as I am concerned for OS X. As I understand it VPN Tracker taps into the same unix protocols that any of these VPN GUI applications does. The difference is that for some configurations getting the details right is difficult. I was not able to get IPsecuritas to work for my users (maybe my limitation?). I am not sure that all have the same options for tweaking settings as I have tried looking at the settings provided by the VPN Tracker setup…

We have 10 licenses and recently had the same issue. I think my turnaround was shorter but there is no reason the reset could not be placed in the license management tool to save that time. The key assures that you can only use with the mac address or serial number of one machine.

but $$? (Unobtrusive and efficient)
How about the cost? The security and redundancy that is reported sounds good but at nearly $210/year for a single GB are there any other more affordable options? (macosx.com offers 1GB mail and 1GB web/ftp for only $50/year for example)

20 Security Updates since Panther came out...
Sounds like you would prefer not to be using OS X. And that is certainly your decision. As to the fixes and 'Mac' of course it has as much to do with the BSD core of the operating system. Software is continually being changed to add features and when this happens it may lead to vulnerabilities that did not exist before. I have several machines that are running older systems because they work and function…

...further, I think the $49 is a CD(multiple?) and includes the installer (as mentioned regarding build). I have a free install that has a nice launcher but I am not sure where it came from. Anyway, you can go to the site and download for free.

Re: Romains "What is this doing here"
I must say this seems kind of a 'bonehead' comment. If it can be run on OS X then it belongs. You may not run it but that does not mean others will pass. If you have no interest why comment? There must be a thousand programs listed here that you have no use for and I am sure you don't comment on all of those. As far as I know M$ Office is not a…
