BackLight 2.0 (Mac OS X)

CPU priority!

Nice surprise to find a setting for CPU priority. I have the screensaver "Plasma" set to max zoom, medium quality, very slow changes in use as my background, and it was devouring the CPU cycles on my Mac mini's G4, but once I set the priority to 20 (very low) the system is nearly as responsive as it's ever been, and I have a constantly, smoothly changing background color. Very nice. One comment about installation: you may consider adding an installation instruction saying to just drag the app to your Applications folder. It's pretty obvious in the end, but I sat there a few minutes trying to figure out if it was some kind of special plugin, menu extra, etc. that belonged in the /Library folder. [alert admin]

Super DX-Ball 1.00b (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Fun, but CPU-intensive

Quite a fun game, but for some reason it gobbles up my iMac G5's CPU cycles. In fact, a temperature monitor reports that the CPU temp gets up over 78C after maybe 20 minutes of playing. I enjoy it, but probably won't consider the Deluxe version until I know why it uses so much power and if there's a way to reduce it. [alert admin]

Messe up iTunes sound

The game is done well enough except that it garbles iTunes' sound. Guess I won't be playing it too much. Too bad development seems to have stopped years ago. [alert admin]

Acquisition 0.9 (Mac OS X)

Our only choice?

Frustrating and buggy (especially when it loses all hosts when displaying the registration message). Yet pretty much the best thing out there for Mac users. :^p [alert admin]

I read a…

thread in the funmac.com forums where the developers indicated that 1.26 was released too early, without proper testing. So if you're experiencing problems, sit tight, I guess. I like it, but I already wrote some AppleScripts to go with Youpi Key (it's much easier for me to smack the F13 key than aim for a small pause icon when I need to stop the music quickly) so I'll do without for now. Regarding lohengrin2's statement…

about it being a CPU hog -- RBlite will hog the CPU for me every once in a while. I find the progress indicator (within the app itself) just spinning away, and it says something about updating directory listing. If I click on a file in the current folder, it stops. When I select two files before hiding the app, it never seems to do this. If I forget to do that, it will inevitably happen. One star off for that, since I've had the problem for many versions, and the author sent me a confusing response when I mentioned it. Otherwise it's *the* FTP app for OS X. [alert admin]

Safari Enhancer 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Soliel, do you…

mean that the red, yellow, and green buttons in the upper-left corner are invisible? This happened to me when I used Duality to change to a particular theme (QuicksilveR), while other themes work fine. I haven't used Safari Enhancer yet. Just a possibility... [alert admin]

How can 10…

months have gone by with not one single improvement released?? Acrobat Reader is acting rather wonky under 10.2 for me. And we only have a third-party solution for the browser pluggin? They must not care about us anymore. [alert admin]

App Switcher 0.9.6 (Mac OS X)

Uh-oh: the developer's…

site (http://www.mikeash.com/appswitcher/) isn't loading -- "No such host". Have we been left out in the cold? I'm going to find it mighty irritating if I have to use the built-in application switching, or change from the command-tab hotkey (doesn't LiteSwitch make you use a different key combo?). bcast

Yes! Broadcast ruled at Franklin and Marshall... The icons, the ability to bother a whole dorm in just a few minutes, the pointless trolling and arguments... All well before AIM was the way of life (though things sure changed quickly from 1996 - 2000). I haven't tried this software here, but it looks like it falls short of Broadcast in needing explicit server and client apps--Broadcast was everything in one. And…

Does it even work?

Similar experience here. For example, I found a file available from 2 hosts, with reliability rated at 3 stars. Within 30 seconds of Acquisition finding it, I double-clicked to download. I then looked to see why it wasn't downloading, and the status said "Host(s) offline". Grrr. This happens *all the time.*

Our only choice?

It seems the app also has a memory leak at times... For me, it filled up the drive on which I have my swapfiles, and proceeded to cause a kernel panic (can't attribute it to anything else). Though it's behaving at the moment.
