GizmoPictResize 1.10 (Mac OS X)
Very interesting freeware, but some problems to be fixed ![]()

Congratulations and thanks for a contributing a freeware, but I found the app too limiting in its current instantiation. Please update it! ;O)
I stumbled upon this program while looking for an application that would let me batch process a folder of pictures and resize them with a maximum size for web publishing, i.e., I don't care the exact size of the pictures, but they should not exceed a particular amount of pixels in any dimension.
It looked at first like the perfect app for this, but I found it unusable for my purpose (as of version 1.10, build 102 -or is it 103?)
- Why is the setting "Maximal picture width or height when printing" topping off at 556 pixels? I wanted to set it at 1500 pixels, but putting anything larger than 556 is not allowed by the program. Why put in such a limitation, and why a value as small at 556 pixels, I wouldn't mind so much if the limit was at 5000 pixels for instance.
And that setting should be called "Maximal picture width or height when writing to disk", not "...when printing".
Another problem:
The program constantly complains with dialog box "MacPrefsGizmoPictResize.txt: File not found", although I installed the program as instructed by copying the whole folder from the mounted dmg onto my Applications folder
Last, the 'about' box says "Version 1.1.0 build 102" while the main window is titted "Version 1.1.0 build(103)". Which is it? I guess the about box is correct.
Note: Tested this program under Leopard 10.5.6 (up to date as of 15-Feb-2009) on an iMac with 4Gb RAM.
I rate this program as "Recommend", but that is assuming it gets updated to make it actually usable, currently it's not because of the limit in the maximum size setting...

Pukka 1.7.2 (Mac OS X)
Excellent, but please, "Private" should be on by default! ![]()

This app is great, but why can't we have "Private" set by default? This is a major annoyance! It just makes sense to default to the safest way t create a bookmark, i.e., Private I tested Pukka for a few days, but all too often, I publish the bookmark and then realize that I forgot to set the lock while I intended to do it. Then I have to go change the bookmark to private on the web, this is a pain! [alert admin]

Font Pilot 2.4 (Mac OS X)
Software downloads corrupted + Record on Version tracker needs updating
As of today, Dec-12,08, Version tracker is incorrect about the developer. It is no longer Koingo Software. The software was sold to BKeeney Software, http://www.bkeeney.com/ Beware: Another issue with the download is that it downloads (with Safari) as a 7-Mb file named "font_pilot.dmg.bz2". When trying to process this file with Stuffit expander, it becomes a 29Mb corrupted .dmg file that cannot be mounted. BKeeney Software says on their website, without further explanation as to the reason: "Is Safari downloading your file with a .bz2 extension? Simply rename the file and remove the .bz2 extension. You can then double-click on the resulting dmg file to mount it." Doing just that solves the problem. Jus to check, I tried with Camino, and the downloaded file has just the correct .dmg extension. Note: If someone could bring some light on that .bz extension, I'd appreciate. I have seen it before; what is it all about? [alert admin]

chill 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Before I issue any praise to this program, I have to talk about what shocked me: the ugliness of the User Interface! I nearly puked when it first came up on the screen, and I seriously considered quitting immediately and trashing it. It wins the prize of the ugliest UI of the year. At least please give me Preference settings so that I can change the colors. Going beyond the first negative impression, the program is quite interesting, and I kind of like the music produced, although I would have to see with time... And there resides a problem: The demo version stops playing after 7 minutes, which makes evaluating this app difficult. I will really know whether I like it after playing continuously for several hours without interruption. I'd rather have a 1-month demo version that plays without restrictions. As a result, I will probably get tired clicking the play button and will likely forget this app entirely. Too bad... Please provide a demo that I can set as "open at login" and it plays automatically, so it becomes my background music for a while. This way, I will really know whether it suits me and eventually purchase it. Last, I have not read the instructions (who does?). What I want is some bubbles popping up when hovering the cursor on the controls showing short and useful descriptions. So far I have moved the controls randomly and it is far from obvious to tell the change in the music. I suspect the effect is not immediate, which makes sense for this kind of music (no abrupt change), but this defeats interactivity, doesn't it? Please give me a Preference setting so that changes are immediate; when I test the app, I don't mind having an abrupt change when I move a control. Maybe some of my comments will go away when I read the instructions, but I'm really not sure I'll get to that point... [alert admin]

CDFinder 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Serial number column is a must-have! ![]()

I tried this program, but quickly gave up. One thing sorely missing is a serial number column! Cant live without it! Sorry for bad rating, but the program is just unsuable to me without it. Using the comment field as a serial number doesn't cut it, I need the comments field as well. I store CD's by numbering them. How could I find them if they are not stored in some form of serial order? I don't know any other way (if there is one, I'd like to know!) So I need a flexible serial number column, that would by default be the leftmost column. There should be custom & flexible formatting of the serial number as user wishes, like "prefix1234suffix", where "prefix" and "suffix" is set by the user, and 1234 is the serial number (user sets the number of digits). CDFinder should check unicity of serial number, but not enforce necessarily their sequentiality from 1 (so that CD's can be entered in any order). Sequential auto-assignment of serial number should be an option, and the serial number should be editable. [alert admin]

MenuStrip 3.0.5 (Mac OS X)
I tried Menustrip 3.0.5. Looks pretty good for what I have tried, but there is one detail that annoys me so much I doubt I will use this until fixed. One of the first thing I noticed was that the time is displayed in the wrong format (no matching the System preferences). So I went to change the clock format to 24-Hour since I cannot stand the AM/PM format. Two problems: 1- The 3 alarms in the Preferences are still showing in AM/PM format. This is unacceptable to me. 2- The time in Menu strip does not show a 2-digit hour. For instance, when the time is 01:25, it shows as 1:25. This may seem a detail, but it is annoying. Mac OS X displays 01:25 when the time format is set as 24-Hour. Why on earth do I have set the date and time preference in MenuStrip when I already have done so in System Preferences/Sate & Time ???? Why not just fetch the system setting and replicate them exactly in MenuStrip, and in all places (i.e. incl. the alarms!)? Note: I am giving no rating since I haven't tried it enough [alert admin]

Saft - King with a tarnished Crown?
Well said, I totally agree! And thanks for the lead on Glims! If Glims works, I'll be more than glad to drop Saft, not because Glims is free and Saft not (I'll probably send money to the developer of Glims option is provided), but because of the developper.

Since I can't edit my comment, I'll post this as a reply.. I mentioned praising this app, but I didn't do much praise did I? I hope the developers draw the right conclusions from this... This is an app I really want to like. I am probably the ideal customer for it, since I like this kind of mellow music as a background that will put me in the right mood fo focus on my work,…
