SkyChart III 3.6.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Sigh --

No longer launches in Leopard. My favorite sky application is now defunct. [alert admin]

Intaglio 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)

it was part of a promo bundle...and now:

I feel a little taken advantage of that this version's upgrade cost is so high, and the new features so few. It seems the business model of some of these promo-bundlers is to release a pay-for upgrade to make the real dough. I don't begrudge them their money-making opportunities...but from the customer's POV, it's a little off-putting. [alert admin]

Simplify Media 1.0.0.1043 (Mac OS X)

works great, free, responsive developers

I've been using Simplify Media to listen to my home MP3 library at work, and it's wonderful. My library is quite large, and I was stretching the limits of the beta, but the developers quickly identified and addressed my issue in the subsequent release. I've found it to be stable and not resource-hungry...plus, it's free! Very cool! [alert admin]

Professor Fizzwizzle and the Molten Mystery 1.03 (Mac OS X)

I love this game...

And so do my kids (4 & 7 year-olds). They enjoy watching me, kibbitzing, and laughing at the cute animations. These are HARD puzzles, and even with the power of three brains, we sometimes have to watch the solutions (thankfully provided) -- sometimes when a solution includes something unexpected we all erupt in "AHA" laughter. Fun, challenging, gorgous...and inexpensive. I think this is one of the best games for whole families that I can think of. Oh, I also play it when the kids aren't around -- it's that good. Xtorrent 1.0 (41) (Mac OS X)

works for me, very reliably

I'm a happy user (and customer) of Xtorrent. I have been plagued by none of the problems reported here elsewhere (on my MacBook pro or on my Mac mini). I'd like a few more "expert controls" but other than that, this is a fine program in my experience. [alert admin]

Biofilm 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Unique and challenging

Most games can be thought of as a combination or twist on another game or group of games. One of the things I like most about Indy games is that they're way more likely than the "big studio" games to explore new gaming territory. Biofilm definitely explores new gaming territory - you're controlling a collection of bacteria that have different properties, trying to attack another group of cells in a petrie dish. The closest analogy in gameplay I can think of is the Myth series. Actually, like Myth, in spite of being an action game, there's way more strategy involved than is obvious. (How do you use those molotov-throwing dwarves without killing everyone else anyway?) This demo lets you play only one of the practice campaigns, and it's not the easiest one. I spent 30 minutes trying and failing to figure out how to combine my cell armies against the baddies. The game is professionally put together, as is the web site. The video readme is great. And the price is very fair. My only nits: the demo is a bit too hard, and the "powerful command mode" isn't at all obvious how to invoke. [alert admin]

Lineform 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

deeper than meets the eye

In the lineform forums, a theme that keeps repeating is a request for a feature (like mine for scriptability), and the answer being "it's already there". Kind of like TextMate -- Lineform seems simple, but the more you look, the more features there are. That's a nice feat that Adobe and others don't seem to be able to pull off. My main complaint is that the documentation doesn't dive as deep into the program's features as I'd like. [alert admin]

DEFCON 1.4.0 (Mac OS X)

Introversion strikes again

While I enjoyed the aesthetic of Darwinia, I never really "got it." Defcon, however, is fairly easy to get, is absolutely, chillingly gorgeous. While I played the demo, I kept getting this chilling feeling, like enjoying this was somehow wrong, and that this is an inappropriate topic for a game. On the other hand, that very chilling feeling is probably what the authors were after. It's really well rendered -- invokes the feeling of the game "Wargames" probably in a way even better than rewatching the movie would do. It's strategically deep and approachable. Only one nit: my macbook's fan spins up shortly after launching Defcon, and doesn't quit until the game is over. Seems that they have an over-eager busy loop somewhere. Nicely done! I'll buy this one now. [alert admin]

AudioLobe 1.3 (Mac OS X)

gorgeous interface but...

I agree with a previous review that 20 seconds is too short to allow evaluation. However, in those 20 seconds, I heard weird echo-ey artifacts during "slow-down" that I do not hear when using "the amazing slow-downer". Compared to that program, AudioLobe is much prettier, and costs less. On the other hand, if I'm trying to figure out what notes are part of a complex riff, at around half-speed, the echo added to short notes makes the result almost useless for me. The 1.3 update doesn't fix this issue. I look forward to hearing how future versions work out -- this program is promising, but doesn't yet earn my registration dollars. [alert admin]

better, better, and better!

"once all microsoft paradigms are abandoned"...do you mean like live cross-references? The ability to wrap text around images? Yea, those paradigms are so 1990's...taking them out is retro-cool! (I'm sorry, but I bought this program about two years ago, was shocked at the lack of these two features, heard from the developer they were coming "very soon", and here we are years later, and it's just being minor-reved to death.)

Unique and challenging

I just tried the "campaign mode" and it was the easy tutorial I was hoping for. "Practice" is the mode that's way too hard. With this complaint fixed, my rating nudges up even higher a tad. Nice game!

Don't most printers have these features?

<developer here> Good question -- 2-up is an option built in to the printer drivers, but "imposition" is something different. If you want to make a stapled magazine, regular 2-up gets the page order wrong. 2-up puts page 1 on the left hand side, but if you staple and fold, the left-hand side is the <b>back cover</b> of the magazine. "Imposition" is the process of reordering the pages so that they come out in the…

That's what we call ...

One might think so, but I disagree: if you have a long postscript file, Preview forces you to convert the whole thing to PDF, then you view the PDF. With this app, it opens quickly, and (assuming the PS has structured comments), lets you immediately view the first page with no conversion. Plus, as I say a comment or two below yours, if you're a postscript hacker, this program is invaluable.

What's with this WHINE_FEST?

as one of the babies, I'd like to respond:

Thanks to my whining here, Alsoft changed the terms on their web site from "you must by a copy per machine that could run the software " (Yes, I have that right, check all the comments here), to the more reasonable terms quoted here.

If you don't like it, I'll retract my whine and ask them to reinstate their previous terms. (no, I don't like being called…

Thanks for the comment. How does it agree/disagree with the page that comes up before you're allowed to purchase an upgrade (which is where I was stopped cold):

Mellel ... the user-friendly LaTeX?

I agree that's where Mellel is headed (which is why I bought a copy!), but it's not there yet -- for example, Mellel doesn't yet support cross references, which is a pretty basic LaTeX capability, and is absolutely required for any kind of "structured document" application. It's on the road map, and the developer says it's coming (been promised for months now), but it's not there yet....

Not starting at all

I have had success by launching X11 first, then inkscape. Plus, the initial launch can take a long time, so give it a minute or three.

Works in 10.3.9

Good point -- I was conservative with the system requirements, because it does not work with 10.3.8, so I decided not to say 10.3 compatible. I should be more specific -- thanks!
