Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5540 (Mac OS X)

Updated from 5160 w/no problems...

Just as a counterpoint - I successfully installed the 5540 beta over 5160. After reading the previous posts I was a bit concerned - remembering some of the betas leading to 5160. I made sure the 5160 virtual machine was shut down, used the 5540 installer to delete the previous installation (not sure this makes any difference) and installed. Everything went smoothly and on Windows boot the Parallels Tools updated without any problems. The following Windows re-boot proceeded normally. Everything seems to "work" - don't notice any real difference - but I'm not using any graphics intensive programs. (iMac Core 2 Duo 10.4.10) Just realize this is a beta and there may be glitches. AOL Desktop Beta 1 (Mac OS X)

not bad for Beta 1

After reading the last poster's rant I felt a few comments were in order... I use OSX Mail for my legacy AOL email accounts. The old OSX AOL client was basically choking running under Intel OSX. That said, there are people where using AOL is a good solution. Anyone who might set up their parents with a computer, for example, or their wife, etc. It's a low-support single "app" email / web-browser / chat solution. However, the old client AOL browser is painfully out-of-date and doesn't support many sites now causing problems. The new AOL Desktop browser is fast looks solid. The email client, while obviously unfinished, looks like a good start. I'm happy to see AOL get their Mac "client" updated. The AOL web site is fine and no worse than a lot out there. I look forward to the release version... [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5120.0 (Mac OS X)

Fixed a few bugs...

First of all to echo others - this is a beta. Don't install expecting perfection. I upgraded from 5060 which was a little less painful than some of the previous beta upgrades. This time the updates to Parallels Tools completed normally. The Parallels app did crash after the first Windows reboot however. Once installed and resetting the shared applications preferences - which didn't take from the new preferences dialog which comes up on first launch - everything has been solid. This beta fixes a minor window positioning bug in the View OS Window/Single Window mode which was my main annoyance with 5060. I agree that Parallels doesn't deserve to be bashed as some of the posters are doing. I've had very few problems other than fixable glitches on upgrades. Windows runs so well in Parallels on current generation Macs that I expect the dual-core utilization that's on the way really won't make much useful difference for what I use it for. (iMac 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo w/2 Gig memory) [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 2.5 Build 3150.0 (Mac OS X)

Terrific Product

Did a first-time install on a new iMac Core 2 Duo. Terrific replacement for VirtualPC. No problems for me with this beta - but not using any exotic USB devices or iSight. Amazing to watch Windows XP launch from suspend mode in about 7 seconds... Using a legit Windows XP SP2 full install CD, Windows activated with no problems with my old VPC WinXP Pro product key. Eudora 6.2.4b6 (Mac OS X)

Powerful - does the job

This is still probably the most powerful email client for the Mac platform. For those with high-volume email who are more concerned about having a very reliable program with powerful filtering, search and archive capabilities - Eudora can't be beat. Qualcomm is developing Version 7 which will address complaints on rendering HTML directly and Spotlight compatability but for the time being I say functionality over form anyday. Adobe Reader 7.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Great upgrade!

I'm one of those who tried Version 6 for about 5 minutes - determined it was unusably slow - and trashed it, reverting to V5. Installed V7 - is this really from Adobe? I'm impressed. The program launches amazingly fast and the PDF plug-in for Safari, although long overdue, does the job. Yeah the installer is a little funky but the bottom line is this update is well worth it. Congrats to their development team on a fine effort... [alert admin]

Apple Bluetooth firmware 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Normal update on 20" iMac G5

I didn't see any comments regarding this updates applicability for the iMac G5. Apple's usual vague notes refer to the DLink module and Powermacs - nothing about the iMac w/internal bluetooth module. When software update came up with the update listed I figured it must apply. Downloaded the stand-alone 1.2 update, installed, (takes a good 10 minutes) rebooted and everything seems to be functioning normally. [alert admin]

Linksys befsr41/befsr11/befsru31 1.45.11 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

No problems - note comments...

Note that the downloaded file "befsr41v2.1-v1.45.11_code.bin" is the actual binary file to be uploaded to the Linksys (391,168 bytes). (previously the file was named "code.bin" and it was in a .zip archive) Stuffit may see the .bin suffix and try to decompress - ignore - the resultant files are garbage. Went through the usual procedure with MacTFTP, re-booted the router and everything seems to be fine. [alert admin]

$59.95 upgrade for Toast 7 users

They don't make it easy... Upgrade price for existing customers is $59.95. Go to the store -> upgrade -> Toast 7. "Limited time offer..." Still is the best CD / DVD burning software .

Nice as always.

If you have Cocktail, one of the interface options is "Show Quit in Finder Menu". This should do exactly what you want. This is an option in the Finder PList preferences - "QuitMenu Item" YES/NO which can be changed using Property List Editor. Good luck!
