Cocktail 2.3 (Mac OS X)

Simply Great

New fee or not, this is a great app. I can't even watch a movie and get a popcorn nowadays for under $10. Pony-up you stingy freeloaders and buy this man a beer!

Rock-It Launcher 1.1.1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Oh Yeah...

One of the biggest issues that I noticed I completely left out... the shortcut results. There is no relevancy to the keyboard shortcut you type, it just lists matches in alphabetical order. Say you type "WORD' for "Microsoft Office Word"... I get WordPad (ok, good) but I also get over 12 results that don't even have the direct combination of W O R and D in them. I have to sift through the results to find "Microsoft Office Word". And then even after I find it, there is no way for me to set "WORD" to always bring up "Microsoft Office Word" as my first choice. A way to set associations with your shortcuts would be a very key feature for this program. No additional stars off for this as I meant to include it in the first post. [alert admin]

Rock-It Launcher 1.1.1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Good Start...

However, there is definitely room for improvement. Being an avid user of LaunchBar on the Mac, it is fairly easy to see Rock-it's shortcomings. I will touch upon a few...

* The Microsoft .Net Framework v1.1 - This needs to be installed first which is a major PITA! Having to download a separate 23MB installer and then going through the agony of waiting for the .NET installer to finish was almost a deal breaker. Had I not been pining for a Windows version of LaunchBar for many, many months, I would not have gone past go. I'm guessing this is a restriction of the programming language used, but still a big annoyance none-the-less.

* No Assignable Keyboard Shortcuts - I would love to see this implemented. In my case I would like to use Alt+Spacebar to keep in line with my LaunchBar settings at home, but in general more configurability lets everyone use it the way they want it to work, instead of retraining old habits or needing to learn new ones.

* Rough User Interface - The UI could use some spit and polish. The text input field is a solid blue rectangle with no cursor, it doesn't keep in line with typical Windows input fields. This makes it less recognizable that you are OK to begin typing. Not hard to figure out if you know how the app is supposed to work, but a newbie might be confused. Also, the Rock-It window takes up too much screen real-estate. The program preferences can all be put together, accessible by a single "Options" button. I would imagine the window chrome could also be removed as this is supposed to be a keyboard launcher - no need for minimize etc, buttons or a title bar. Just give it a small grab spot to move it, and a resize tab on the bottom corner.

Erm... well, I have more but I need a break from typing.

All-in-all this is good start to bringing an indispensable time-saving tool over to an OS that could really use it. The effort is very appreciated... and with a bit more work would be one of the killer Windows utilities. [alert admin]

MSN Messenger 3.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Standard MS Fare

Well, nothing ground-breaking here, and still behind it's counterpart on that other OS (um, what's it called again?) ...but it works without any major issues. I will stick with Fire for now (and will keep an eye towards Proteus should it ever stabilize). [alert admin]

Microtek ScanMaker ScanWizard 7.0 (Mac OS X)

5900 - No Issues

Other than not finding an easy way to hide (or kill) the Scanner Finder program from running at startup (mildly annoying, but not vital) Microtek ScanWizard worked flawlessly for me. [alert admin]

iClock 1.12 (Mac OS X)

Love it!

iClock is a must-have app. So many features that it is easily worth the $20 bucks. Drop in the bucket for what you get... [alert admin]

Proteus 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Looks great, but buggy!!

I've also had many of the previously stated issues. Successful initial connection to AIM, sporatic import of contact list, followed by disconnection from service, and subsequent inability to access my account through any AIM client (even after waiting through the supposed 10 minute ban period).

Also had issues with my settings not saving correctly, constantly reverts some (not all) of my preferences back to the defaults and sets the list window back to it's initial size/location.

Finally, I get hung up at the registration window (which is not an "occasional" popup, it happens every launch of the app) for 6-8 seconds, and I cannot Quit the application without getting the BBoD.

I have not had much luck with any fixes found in the Proteus forums (http://www.indigofield.com/forums/).

I am reserving judgement on my rating of this app until an updated version arrives... this one is not for public consumption.

Synchronize! Pro X 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Excellent

As I am in complete agreement w/ freevito's review, and will not likely be able to say it any more elequently, I will suffice to say that SPX has worked for me flawlessly thus far, and as stated. It deserves every bit of five stars. [alert admin]
