AppDelete 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Seems good...

but the new version only allows one try before requiring a $5 donation, so it is hard to evaluate. A few tries would really be needed to get a feel for it, as it seems to relaunch the Finder several times, making windows blink on and off like Christmas tree lights until it's done working. A little disconcerting so would have to test further before making a commitment. Otherwise, it seems to do a good job. [alert admin]

Caffeine 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Just what I've been looking for....

Perfect. Now I can set my energy saver preferences permanently and override them when I need to with Caffeine. Plus the icon makes me smile when I click on it. Thank you, developer. [alert admin]

Chopper 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Incredibly addictive

Who can resist flying around in a helicopter and rescuing civilians and blasting jets, tanks and bazooka men? I can't! Quite excellent artwork and gameplay. [alert admin]

iBackup 6.4 (Mac OS X)

No problems here

The last update gave me problems with Applescript errors, but this one is fine for me with 10.4.11. Good application. I like the way you can use plugins to back up preferences and other files associated with specific programs. The interface is very clear and the program is easy to use. Not for clones though, just User backups. Recommended. [alert admin]

Budget 5.3.4 (Mac OS X)

A good investment

I've tried a few budgeting/money management programs and was looking for something that was simple enough, yet could do what I needed. I originally checked this one out because I liked the interface and the setup wizard. Actually, it turned out to be quite a bit more complicated than I thought, but that was mostly due to a very erratic income, which was tough to make work within the context of the program. Stuck with it though, printed out a lot of the help manual and, most helpfully to myself, made dummy accounts to practice on and observe how the program handled transactions. The demo, which times out after a certain number of transactions, ran out on me, but I took a chance and purchased the program. Glad I did, because it has made budgeting a lot easier as I have adjusted it to my needs. I found the income/pay aspect of it the most confusing at first because there are several options for inputting it. But without a regular paycheck, I ultimately settled on a simple deposit approach, whereas the setup wizard takes a regular (or irregular) pay approach and tries to allocate it among the things you buy every month. Personally, I found this confusing and have opted for a simple deposit/transfer/spend approach. But given that, it works fine. The support was very helpful, too. [alert admin]

Battle For Wesnoth 1.3.18 (Mac OS X)

A gift

This game is a gift to anyone who likes fantasy battle tactics games. The art is excellent, the music is enjoyable, the built-in campaigns are well-written. Reminds me of the old Heroes of Might and Magic a bit. Some people say the AI is tough and it can take a while to play up to speed. But the few beginner campaigns I've tried are a good introduction, some even introducing play concepts and strategies along the way. Can't say enough good about this. However...this latest version has crashed a few times on me, or vanished my saved games. So it seems a little unstable, maybe. Otherwise, top-drawer. Version 1.4 should rock. [alert admin]

LaunchBar 4.3.4 (Mac OS X)

A must-have

I think this was the first shareware program I bought when I purchased an ibook and installed OS X a few years ago. Since then, it's set to open at log in so it's always available. I've gotten so used to it being there, I'm feel at a loss when using a machine without it. There is a massive amount of different things that can be opened with LaunchBar--I probably use 5% of its total capability. I think any power user would love this program. [alert admin]

Azada 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Pretty good puzzles...

...and I never liked puzzle games. The "plot" about someone being stuck in a book is a bit thin, but the artwork is good and the game seems well-polished. I would recommend it for all ages, though you may want to give very young kids a little push-start. Having played Mastermind with them at some point is probably a plus. [alert admin]

iBackup 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Does a good job

I use this program as an adjunct to my regular backup program because it has an easy format for saving specific system and application preferences. That way I don't have to root around in my old user Library for the preferences I need when it comes time to do a restore. It takes a while for the program to start up for some reason, but maybe it's just collecting information, I don't know. Seems quite reliable and everything is logged and plain to see. [alert admin]

SMARTReporter 2.3.0 (Mac OS X)

Very helpful

I like looking up in the menu bar and seeing the reassuring green icon all the time (so far, knock on wood.) Thanks to the developer for making this easy to use program. [alert admin]

Is this really indispensable?

Is it indespensible? It depends on what you want. Pando must be installed by the sender and reciever. Also, FileChute is incredibly easy to use and convenient. How will you know if it's for you? Easy--try the demo.

UPS

The package is a trial. It just puts a watermark over your work. It's easy enough to delete later if you don't like it.
