Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Good--when it works

...it just doesn't work reliably. Sometimes things synch, sometimes they don't. No way to know in advance. Frustrating since it would be extremely useful if reliable. As is, I'm sorry I spent my money. [alert admin]

WriteRoom 1.0 (Mac OS X)

I've grown to love it...

At first it didn't seem like much of anything--after all, you can type just about anywhere. But I kept being drawn back to it, and I've realized how nice the simpliity is. Even though you can't do all your fancy page formatting here, the writing environment is so good, I think it's worth the extra step to write in Write Room, then cut and paste to a word processor for formatting. I even have use it to transfer text to Final Draft (screenplay format). Try it, you'll like it! [alert admin]

SuperNotecard 1.6 (Mac OS X)

love it, BUT...

...almost none of the ususal keyboard shortcuts work--very annoying when you're "in the flow" and you've got to stop and use the mouse, the old-fashioned way!

Also, sure wish I could use bold-face and italics. Can you imagine Stephen King without italics? How would the characters think?

Those quibble aside, it's a fantastic organizer that doesn't tell you how to write, it just helps you track what you do write. Please add those few little fixes and it's all five-stars, as far as I'm concerned! [alert admin]

Cheap Impostor 2.3 (Mac OS X)

All you need indeed!

I just posted a good review for Clickbook, which has many more printing options that this, but almost none of which I use beyond "make a booklet." If I had known that Cheap Imposter was back I don't think I would have bought the (more expensive) Clickbook. Best of all, this one does signatures, which are fantastic for longer documents, or if you happen to binding books from the material you print out. As far as I know, none of the other inexpensive imposition programs can do this. I mostly print scripts and books, and much past 80 pages, a single-signature booklet gets bulky and hard to fold. Glad to see this nice program is available again! [alert admin]

ClickBook 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Problems fixed--great program

Initially, it seemed that Clickbook would crash when printing from most programs, but I contacted support and they sent an upgrade (3.05) which seems to have fixed all the problems. The price seems a little high, but, really, I use it for almost every print job (generally printing to half-page or quarter-page booklets--saves a LOT of paper, and super convenient to carry around), so I averages out to be econimical. I have had a hard time make some of the less standard formats print correctly, in particular tri-fold brochures. I expect I'm missing a setting somewhere, but whatever it is is not clear, so Clickbook should hold your hand a little more. On a similar note, the layout descriptions are not as useful as they could be. I think a lot more "how to" or even "why to" information could be provided to help users figure out more ways to better use the program. Overall, I really like Clickbook and recommend it. Even if you just use it for basic booklets, it's worthwhile, and if you learn to use the many other templates, it's a bargain. [alert admin]

Shoebox 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Love it. Great organization.

It may just be that this program matches the way my brains wants to organize my photos. But it has been vastly preferable to iPhoto and iView for me. I almost gave up, because it takes a while to get the hang of all the categories (create your own) and how to use aliases, but once I got it, it became quite fun--and the end result is really excellent organization. Spend an hour using it and see if doesn't suddenly sort of click into place for you. I have had some random crashes, but no data was lost, so no big deal. I do agree with other comments that the "pro" price is way too high. I paid for the junior version, and don't know what I'll do if I reach that 10,000 photo point. [alert admin]

FootTrack 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Great new version

Such a smart and easy program. Back in version one, I asked for the ability to "group" across tapes, and this version has it--great! It really makes the difference between a huge mass of almost meaningless videos and a useful collection in which you can find any particular clip quickly and easily. Love it! [alert admin]

StickyBrain 3.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Very good, very helpful, and...

...very slick--highlight anything on a webpage, including the GRAPHICS (!), and a key command sends it be filed in StickyBrain. The fact that it takes the graphics too, is fantastic. The links stay live and the url is added to the file so you can get back to the original if you need to. I find it easy, intuititive, and even fun. [alert admin]

Miss Lonelynotes 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Very, very nice

I've looked at many of these aids for writers, including Ulysses and Copywrite, Power Structure. I've tried to tame outliners like Hog Bay and Omni. Each of these has been very close to being helpful, but each has some drawback. The notes area that Ulysses and Copywrite provide is great, but they don't provide any kind of outlining. Power Structure, does, but it doesn't let you attach notes directly to a particular scene. So far, and I'm still typing with my fingers crossed, Miss L seems to be filling the bill. The tracking feature for plots and "factors" is fun to watch (it tracks automatically) and useful--you can look at list of plotlines and scenes that belong to them! You can see every time that important gun appears in the story. The outlining feature is a little awkward, since it's all done via the index card metaphor, but it works. I just discovered you can have sub-decks within a deck, so it really is an outliner, and you can see the full outline in the explorer view. Very attractive, very useful software. [alert admin]

Choice?

Have a look at Freeway http://www.softpress.com/en. I can't run Dreamweaver on my iMac (old G3), but Freeway works great.
