Hear 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Works for me

Wow, some really mixed reviews here. For myself, I had been using SRS iWow. Whereas I think that's a good program, I always got a certain amount of distortion in the sound. Hear has been giving me much cleaner sound. I was initially hesitant to use it because I found that the previous incarnation (OSS 3D) was not entirely stable. But they seem to have worked out the bugs, and I think this program has been well worth the money. [alert admin]

VMware Fusion 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

No problems here

I haven't had a single problem with this program. I wanted to give Parallels a chance, but they never even responded to an initial e-mail inquiry I sent them. I figured that was a sign of support that would never come. The Fusion folks answered all of my inquiries and did so promptly. I've had no regrets buying Fusion. [alert admin]

SlidePad 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Maybe useful?

I don't use either this program or SideNote, although I have in the past used the latter. But I have read some reviews that suggest SideNote does not work well with Spaces. I honestly don't know if that's true; perhaps others can provide feedback to clarify. [alert admin]

DrawIt 3.7 (Mac OS X)

"Useless" is in the eye of the beholder

I want to add to the reply to "Absolutely Useless." I agree that one should not expect Illustrator-level abilities from a program at this price. There are those of us who need basic drawing tools and do not have the budgets to buy the industrial-strength options. For myself, I'm still exploring what program(s) to buy. At present, I do not have a license for DrawIt, but I asked the author for some technical assistance. I was given far more support than I would have imagined, and for free. And I don't think it was just to make a sale; I honestly got a sense that the author is simply helpful. I think that speaks very highly of both the author and the program. Just try to get that from Adobe. [alert admin]

Path Finder 5.0.2 (Mac OS X)

I stand corrected

I felt the need to correct an earlier criticism I had made. I had complained that I didn't like the new sidebar because the font and icon sizes were too small. (That has been a significant problem with Apple's Finder. Not every computer user has awesome eyesight.) Well, I just discovered that the popup menu in the lower left corner of the browser has a "preferences" setting for the sidebar that lets you adjust both font and icon sizes. That's a welcome, welcome improvement over what Apple has offered. This has made my PF 5 experience a lot more enjoyable. Despite other people's complaints, the more I play with PF 5, the more I like it. The new features were worth the upgrade price to me. I do understand that some of you have complaints about certain bugs in features I probably don't use; but I have also found that the developers respond to my inquiries. [alert admin]

SwitchResX 3.8.5 (Mac OS X)

Looks like APE to me

I see absolutely nothing in the installation process that lets me by-pass APE. Now, I do have an older version of APE, and the installer wants me to update it. But I do not wish to update it. I have had better luck with the older, beta version of APE than the current one. So, how, specifically, do I get around this? Once I have APE, I MUST use it with SwitchRes? And I MUST update APE to use SwitchRes? [alert admin]

Toast Titanium 9.0.4 (Mac OS X)

So, what are the options?

I actually use Toast 6, even with Leopard. (My needs are simple, for now.) But my question is, what are the truly viable alternatives to Toast that are out there? Surely, a lot of you who complain about Toast must have explored these. Are there any good competitors? Everything here says I should not use the most current version of Toast, so I'd honestly like to know where to look instead. Thanks. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.4 (Mac OS X)

Quick tip if it won't install

I used "Delocalizer" to remove the language packages. The updater won't work if you do this. However, I read a solution on another site and want to pass it along. It works, but follow the instructions to the letter. If you get the message that "No version of the software found on volume", due to having removed all the megabytes of language files etc, you can still get the installer to run. 1. Download the update from MS and save the updater on yr desktop - you will be modifying the file, so need to be able to edit and save it 2. Right click on the Updater and click "Show Package Contents". 3. Navigate to Contents -> Resources. You need to modify the script: package_updatable. 4. Remove these lines using Text Edit or BBEdit or similar: if not found_valid_version: sys.exit(48) Save these changes to the Updater then close. Now it will update. [alert admin]

AIM for Mac Beta 2 (Mac OS X)

I use iChat

I agree with the others. Why is there no A/V with this? iChat lets me use AIM and gives me the ability to see and hear others. I honestly think that some developers are giving mere lip service to Apple users with these useless apps and their sporadic development. Why bother. [alert admin]

aggressively marketed app???

The simplest solution is to find an example of one of your files in the Finder. Choose "Get Info." Click the arrow next to "Open with:" Then choose the word processor you want as the default for that type of file. Then click the "Change All . . ." button and agree to the change. I realize this does not solve the problem of Bean overtaking all other preferences. …

Still works on Intel and Leopard

Make that three of us. I, too, had the paranoia when I moved to Leopard; I had read one review that said DD was really slow. But I've not had that experience. And, yes, I use DD and DT; but DD is much faster and more convenient in several ways. I'm glad I kept my copy of it.

The alternatives are problematic for this app...

Given that Visual Hub is no longer supported, I think this alternative has moved up a few notches. For that matter, Visual Hub never properly worked with real player files, at least not in my experience. I seem to be having better luck with this one. I'll gladly pay the money; it isn't that much, and it works.

er, what's new in 5.0.1??

I think it depends on how you like to do things. The split pane option is worth it to me. Compare the prices of ForkLift and DiskOrder (two of the more full-featured programs that offer this), and you'll find that PathFinder's upgrade fee is cheaper. (And Path Finder does more than either of them.) Granted, that might not be a compelling reason for you to upgrade, but it's one possible one…

huge disappointment

That's my biggest complaint as well. I could even accept the new sidebar if (1) you could customize what's there and (2) you could adjust the size of the icons and fonts. I see no reason they can't do this. It seems like they took the biggest flaw from Apple's Finder and tried to turn it into an upgrade feature. Strange.

Upgrade fee protocols

It would be helpful information. Long-time users of PathFinder know that every time they jump up to a new number, there's an upgrade fee; new users should be told that. Historically, once you've purchased, all upgrades through a particular version are free (i.e., all versions of 5.x are likely to be free).

PF5 So far

I agree in several areas. One of my main reasons for using PF was because I could set custom font and icon sizes. Apple's Finder gives me no options in the sidebar and very limited options in the windows. Apparently, no one at Apple or Cocoatech is over age 50, so they don't understand the eye strain that results. Now I've lost that function in the new PF sidebar. I…

forget the Finder

Odd comment. I can delete anything I want with Apple's Finder, PathFinder, ForkLift, Macintosh Explorer, muCommander, etc. I've used PathFinder for years and have never once had a situation arise where I accidentally deleted something I didn't want deleted. PF is the premier Finder replacement, and these guys have put nothing less than quality craftsmanship and careful planning into this program. There's nothing to fear.

why

The reason I don't buy a cheap PC is because I have a Mac laptop and don't want to haul two computers with me wherever I go. Sometimes I need Windows applications. Why should I have to carry two laptops when the need arises?
