WindowShade X 4.2 (Mac OS X)

Why?

Frankly, after over a year, one would think they could get minimize in place to work (rather than merely advertising that it works). I set it to line up windows on the bottom, starting from the left. Immediately, it puts my windows in the upper left corner. Is it really too much to ask that this feature be made to work? It certainly doesn't seem to be too much for them to ask for more money. Why can't Apple just buy this thing and make it work? [alert admin]

SmackSpaces 0.3 (Mac OS X)

Why?

With all of the extras, I paid nearly $3000 for this machine. Why in the world would I want to hit it? [alert admin]

Switcheroo b262 (Mac OS X)

Needs some features

I've asked the developer several times if this program can have an "exclude" feature. I don't need all of my active programs showing in this. It would also be neat if one could select open windows, just as one can with the dock. Alas, I don't think the developer is continuing to work on this program. Too bad. [alert admin]

CrossOver 7.0.2 (Mac OS X)

On the contrary

I had responsed to the previous post, but I feel the need to make my point more overt here. To say "it sucks" is pointless. I find just the opposite to be true. Hey, if you need to know Windows and a broad array of Windows programs, then ya, VMware Fusion is the best thing out there. But for me, all I needed was to know the Windows version of MS Office. Crossover runs that just fine. I can even use drag-and-drop to open documents. It doesn't require as much memory as VMware. So, how, exactly, does this "suck?" I haven't had a single problem with this software, and I get decent customer support. They even provided an educator discount. Again, how, exactly, does this "suck?" [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.2 (Mac OS X)

No problems

I didn't have any problem installing. I restarted, repaired permissions, and fired it up. Word seemed to load in about 5 seconds. I was impressed. [alert admin]

SRS iWOW 2.0.2.255 (Mac OS X)

Volume Logic?

I can't say I like iWow as much as I want; for me, it creates a certain distortion in my music. I eventually went to a combination of Hear and Volume Logic. But candidly, NONE of the audio enhancement programs I've tried have worked without Volume Logic to regulate the peaks and distortions. Of course, Volume Logic is no longer available for the Mac, so that poses problems for many people. To the developers out there: Surely, at least one of you can recreate the magic that was once Volume Logic? You'd have a best-selling product if you did. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.0 (Mac OS X)

It can be done, but . . .

Having read a lot of reviews, I decided that I wanted the increased speed and decided to attempt this. I had success through the following, although it was probably considerable overkill. I agree with all commentary that having to go through so many hoops in order to make this update work is pure B.S. on Microslop's part. 1. Restarted in Safe mode. 2. Reset launch services and repaired permissions. (I use YASU) 3. Restarted in Safe mode. 4. Ran the MS update installer. 5. Restarted in Safe mode. 6. Repaired permissions with Disk Utility. 7. Restarted in regular mode. I haven't had any problems with it. Word does seem to open faster. I can't say I've seen any change in Excel. Haven't tried PowerPoint yet. I don't use Entourage, so I can't speak to that. [alert admin]

3D-Space VFS 1.9.4 (Mac OS X)

Not so fast

People are too quick to judge what might not suit them personally. A couple of points are in order in reviewing this program. First, the developer is considerably busy with Smart Scroll, which a lot of people enjoy using. Given that this is probably the developer's primary product, I'm sure a lot of time and resources have to go into maintaining that. Second, 3D-Space is an evolving product. I know from conversations with the developer that some significant changes are being worked on for future versions. The current version was sufficient for me to become interested. People have preferred styles of managing information. Some like Apple's Finder. Some like the terminal. Some prefer split-panes, such as ForkLift. Others like the customization of PathFinder. To say that any one product is bad or mere "eye candy" misses the mark. I prefer a visual representation of information, and 3D-Space provides a very useful way for me to process my data and information. Just because the approach does not work for you does not mean it does not work for others. [alert admin]

Trampoline 2.3.3 (Mac OS X)

Check it out first

I want to make my comments more overt here. This program has significantly reduced my pending carpal tunnel problems. Instead of having to make numerous trips to the dock (or other program switchers), I programmed my center mouse button to pop up the Trampoline menu when I click it. It's a lot easier for me to traverse a small piece of screen realty to find what I want. This might sound trivial, but as I've gotten older, it has made a significant difference. (I've been using Macs for nearly 20 years.) In addition, the program is highly configurable and fast. If you tinker with it for less than a minute - and read the instructions that come with it - you will see that it is not at all difficult to configure and use. The developer has also always been prompt with replies and consideration of feature requests. This is a program one should check out before dismissing it as "yet another program switcher and launcher." I'll take it over the dock any day. [alert admin]

AN update every other day-

It's not literally every other day; those kinds of comments are misleading. This is solid software and very functional. You can be assured that when final releases come out, they are reliable. And I would add that this developer has been highly responsive to customer feedback. He even created a custom piece of software for me and supported it (for free) well beyond what I paid him for. That's…

Not yet

Alas, given that it's now September, I do not think they'll eventually get it right. Considering the cost of these machines, it's pretty nasty of them to simply dismiss the matter. I'll be buying my wife a new laptop soon, and it wil be a Windoze machine. Cheaper, and at least it will work.

interesting

Good suggestions. I would add to that the ability to exclude certain apps. I recommend that you e-mail them directly at contact@docklandsoft.com. I wrote to them a few hours ago with my aforementioned request, and they replied promptly. (They'll be adding the exclude feature in the future.) This app looks promising, particularly for keeping track of open windows.

Not sure why people are complaining

I'm complaining because not all features are stable. I can get it to Windowshade, but I cannot get the "minimize in place" feature to work properly. It will initially minimize, but when I try to maximize, the window simply disappears. The program is still active, but it's as if the window hides, and I can't find it anywhere. Further, when I try to set a new hotkey preference, it will not…

Can't update

As noted, the update worked for me, so I'm not sure why it won't work for you guys. When these issues came up a few upgrades ago, I had read all of the hassles people had and did the following. Maybe it will work for you. 1. I repaired permissions and updated prebindings. (I use YASU; there are other programs that also do this.) 2. I restarted in "Safe" mode, and then…

Compatibility problems (Mac vs. PC)

I'm having the same problem. I teach, and my lectures are in PowerPoint slides that took me a long time to create. It gets embarrassing to suddenly see my slides look shoddy. Even worse, in many instances, I'm using a Times New Roman font. How can PowerPoint possibly screw that up? But it does.
