MacIrssi 0.8.5.7 (Mac OS X)
0.8.5.7 and 0.8.5.8 crash on launch, iBook 900
Thread: Unknown Link (dyld) error: incompatible cpu-subtype (Ironically, a big reason I like irssi over irc clients is because of its low cpu usage and system requirements.) [alert admin]

Bryce 5.5 (Mac OS X)
DAZ has made the current version available for download from Download.com through 6 September. Caveat: The app hasn't been updated in a while. Does not run on Tiger (10.4). More info: http://www.daz3d.com/program/bryce/bryce5free.php?trid=31337 [alert admin]

Flock 0.7.1 (Mac OS X)
This version (based on Firefox 1.5.0.4) is an impressive improvement over the Flock Developer Preview from last October. In part because Firefox is better, but also the value added features are much improved, it's FAR more stable, and it's the prettiest cross-platform browser by a long shot. Some have commented that this browser is SO much faster and more stable on OS X than Firefox: to be fair though, you need to create a new profile in Firefox before making the comparison. And a fresh install of Flock is a lot more fun than a bare Firefox. [alert admin]

Flip4Mac WMV 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Flip4Mac gives us the familiar QT interface, even as it functions now almost as slow and clumsily as the WiMP plug-in was. But now when you encounter embedded movies and the seekbar is unresponsive and the viewport is flickery and scrolls poorly, it's QuickTime that looks bad rather than Windows Media. Microsoft happily stopped plug-in development and now hosts Flip4Mac on their site. I wonder if it will work much better on Intel Macs. Still I recommend this now because what else are you going to do? Is there an MPlayer plugin...? [alert admin]

Fire 0.32.h (Mac OS X)
Listen, Yahoo doesn't work with Fire now.
Yahoo quietly changed their auth scheme and Fire can no longer log in. If you need a multi-IM program right now, you might try Gaim. [alert admin]

Mozilla Thunderbird 0.2 (Mac OS X)
I can confirm that it is (a) fast, and (b) currently a memory hog. This app is still early in development and has many signs that it was torn recently from the guts of the Mozilla App Suite. Those who know the strengths and advantages of Mozilla Mail already know and understand the value of this app, even on a platform with a pretty Aqua alternative for the average user (Mail.app).
I still do use Mail.app, and I don't believe any other mail application would compel me to just drop Mail.app in the Trash and empty it. That said, here's some reasons off of the top of my head to use Thunderbird:
- Thunderbird has extensive offline support, and doesn't have to freak out or lock up when you're offline or float out of AirPort range.
- HTML mail. I know, I know. Still, if you actually receive HTML mail that you want to see rendered correctly, OR if you have to create HTML mail, then know that Mozilla apps do this in the cleanest, most standard-compliant way.
- Extensive option control and customizability. Way too much to get into here. Check out the prefs. There are numerous extensions and skins available online. There is much a non-programming user can do to make Thunderbird look and function in a personalized and effective way.

Charla 1.6.3 (Mac OS X)
I just installed the updated 1.6.3 (from 2003-06-13, not 2002-09-04) and it works. The developer didn't advance the version number for some reason, and I had thought Charla 1.x was permanently broken by Yahoo changes and stopped development. So if you want basic Y! chat on OS X, but something faster and slicker than Java in the browser, there it is. Follow the links to the developer's page. [alert admin]

Charla 2.0 (Mac OS X)
about this release is that the chat window's messages flow much faster. Have only been able to run this release for about a minute at a time. Crashes often, particularly badly on a sketchy AirPort connection: the first bad packet seems to throw up an error dialog which you must dismiss, followed by the immediate crash of the program. Aside from problems like this, which may be fixable, I'd like to see an option to use a chat client strictly for chat, leaving private messages to go to the IM client of choice (in my case, Fire). MiCal 0.9.3b (Mac OS X)
registered user, so I'm not going to whine. I'm not sure how long the MiCal icon has been leading me to believe it's a day later than it actually is. LOL. I just noticed that today the icon happily shows "12". Don't know why, my system clock and time zone are still fine. I think I'll stop "evaluating" for now. Still fails on any non-US-ascii text. Even "cafe" with an accent becomes "café" (UTF-8). [alert admin]

You aren't given the option to install Asian language support. OS X is delivered as an inherently international OS. The option you are given at install time is whether to install additional Asian fonts.
What you are removing with Monolingual is something else altogether: the translations of menus, etc, which exist within the OS software and in your applications to various extents.

This app adds four services in the GPG submenu. Also, at the project (not listed on VT) is GPGServices.service which adds more, though some are redundant. Gpg Tools also adds services.

FLV playback is what Perian is adding. And that's plenty cool, as there were no other good options for playback outside of a browser embed. QuickTime has played .swf for several years. If you didn't have the Flash plugin, the QT plugin could cover you for somewhat out-of-date Flash support.
