ChronoSync 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Superb if you put ChronoAgent on the remote machine, problems otherwise ![]()

I am another longtime satisfied ChronoSync user who was having serious problems with version 4 - hangs and crashes. After going to the product website, I decided to install the add-on product ChronoAgent on my other machine (the one I do not run Chronosync on). This is advertised as allowing a direct (non-AFP) connection between the two machines, with greater speed.
The result for me is a tremendous speed increase in backups, and what seems to be total reliability. Without knowing any of the technical details, I am going to guess that ChronoSync 4 was developed with Chronoagent in mind, and that problems with standard AFP connections went uncorrected as a consequence.
So for ChronoSync 3 users, I strongly recommend installing ChronoAgent (at $10) if you upgrade to version 4. The result will be the familiar ChronoSync 3 reliability plus an enormous increase in file transfer speed. A real, noticeable improvement.
[I should also add that I found the instructions concerning the use of ChronoAgent quite confusing. You install Chronoagent on the machine you are *not* running ChronoSync on; set it up on that machine, following the instructions; then add a new "connection" using the Connections pane of the Chronosync Preferences on the machine *with* ChronoSync (the *other* machine). (You'll need the IP address, port number and other info from your ChronoAgent setup.) Then pick that connection as the location of the folder to be backed up in your ChronoSync document. ] [alert admin]

AppleJack 1.5 (Mac OS X)
I used Applejack happily for several years on pre-Leopard systems, and was happy to have it back. Foolishly, just for fun, after installing it yesterday, I tried it out on my stable, smoothly running MacBook 1,1 (running Leopard 10.5.4). Applejack run with "applejack auto" found no problems, and exited normally. But when I rebooted, kernel panic. Every time I rebooted. Zapping PRAM etc. did not help. Fortunately, I had a recent Time Machine backup that I was able to restore from using my Leopard installation disk to boot. After a few hours, my system was running again. I have now uninstalled Applejack with "applejack uninstall". Since I don't know what Applejack did that caused the problem (and yes I know that it is running programs built into the OS), the only moral of the story is to make sure you have a full backup and bootable disk handy before running Applejack. But though this was a program that never caused harm and often helped in its previous incarnation, I will wait a long while (and wait for more user reports) before trying it again. [alert admin]

Totally excellent Spotlight supplement or replacement ![]()

In its latest version, this has become a superb program. Basically, it is a full-featured, rationally designed user interface for Spotlight searches. It can supplement what Apple provided or fully replace it. With the redesigned "Blitz Search" feature found in the latest version (an unfortunate name, I think!), which provides access from the menu bar, I have started using it as a full replacement for Apple's Spotlight interface, and I am very happy with it. Support through the forums on the developer's website is first-rate as well. [alert admin]

This program is very simple and *very* fast. It did exactly what I needed, which was adding subtitles to a Quicktime movie, and did it in about 60 seconds --- which compares very favorably with the huge amounts of time various other programs seem to require for the same task. I did run into a problem, which turned out to be the result of an improperly formatted .srt file at my end. It would have been nice if the program dealt with the problem more gracefully than just stalling and crashing on me! HOWEVER, when I contacted the developer, I received a response almost immediately, and after I sent him my subtitles file (at his request), he spotted the error right away, and I was in business. So I, for one, am very impressed with the support for this product. [alert admin]

TranslateIt! Deluxe 8.1 build 8191 (Mac OS X)
A well done, very useful program. Seems to have good support as well -- they responded promptly when I had a problem. Russian-oriented, since the program's developers appear to be Russian -- but there are dictionaries available that get you between English and a variety of other languages, and open-source dictionaries are also fully usable. I am personally using this program all the time. My only criticism is that it is a bit unobvious how to install dictionaries. I figured it out (click on plus under dictionaries, and don't do anything else except click on the dictionary files you want to install) -- but some more guidance would be useful. Now TranslateIt comes with a widget as well -- but don't judge the package by the widget, which looks very odd indeed. (Initially, I thought I was having some kind of video problem when I first saw it.) Additionally it does not seem to work reliably. So I just ignore the widget, and use the regular program instead -- which does not look odd and works perfectly. [alert admin]

Weather Underground Weather Widget 1.42 (Mac OS X)
Very good, with one tiny "but" ![]()

Widget is excellent, gives more information than the Apple-supplied alternative. But: What's with the so-called "photo feed"? Why does a *weather* widget also need to download a whole bevy of unrelated images of "pets", "natural disasters", "wild animals", "windmills" and, yes, random past weather events -- which get optionally displayed in a tiny window below the weather, to boot. Click on them, and you can see them full-size in your browser. Harmless, I guess, but definitely a bit odd. [alert admin]

iTunes Connection Monitor 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Almost works, but not quite...
With someone sharing my iTunes music, this widget does tell me what they are listening to, but the "Connected Users" side of the widget just says "Searching..." and never leaves that state. I think that is the same problem experienced by the previous user. I'm using iTunes 5.0 and OS 10.4.2. [alert admin]

Menu Master 1.3 (Mac OS X)
An excellent program, very helpful -- with a few quirks. For example, it seems to produce two "Empty Trash" items in the File menu of the Finder -- for no apparent reason. [alert admin]

I've been using Fruitmenu happily for more than two years, but something has gone seriously wrong here. Like other users, I find myself waiting several seconds for the menu to open, and redrawing of the menu bar is often imperfect. What a shame! [alert admin]

The keychain problem arises when the program is anywhere other than the Applications folder (including when it is in a subfolder within the Applications folder) or the Utilities folder. This is mentioned in the FAQ on the Econsoft website, and is indeed annoying -- but fixable. There are other instructions to follow to fix this as well, see the website. Unfortunately, I have to agree about slowness and beachballs. For example, right now,…

Thanks. I put what information I have on the bug report. It is at least reassuring to see that others have problems that seem similar to the one I faced. Hopefully it will be sorted out soon!

The widget is a component of a program listed elsewhere: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32189 I've no idea why it's listed separately here.

Well that's not working for me. I am sent to: ".../86/TB2Mac86.dmg" I've tried three variants: changing both 86's, just the first, and just the second -- all dead links. What did you try that worked?

I am a long-time Chronosync user, and a satisfied one -- but I too did not realize until this moment that "Exclude" meant "exclude permanently". So I would like to suggest that the button be changed to "Exclude permanently", to clear up this confusion. Now I am wondering if things have been failing to sync without my knowledge, all along.

Sorry, but none of these ideas help. Some of them, in any case, are only relevant to earlier versions of Endnote and Word. No, there is clearly something very wrong with Endnote 8 (and with the process that produced it and placed it on the market, given the other comments that have appeared here).

>Why is anyone using Office 2004 over the much faster and more
>stable 10.1.x anyway?
Because Office 2004 (like Endnote 8) supports Unicode, which is essential if you deal with documents that use foreign alphabets or characters.
