iPod Launcher 1.6 (Mac OS X)

Can be done with Applescript

The same results can be handled with an Applescript folder action attached to the /Volumes folder. There's information on Apple's Applescript pages explaining exactly how to do this. [alert admin]

Yahoo! Widget Engine 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Finally, some much needed fixes

Nice to see the HUD/Konspose bug fixed. That was a drag. The Yahoo Widget Engine team needs to work on quality control. And why "Yahoo Widget Engine?" Flickr hasn't become "Yahoo Photo Sharing Portal." Very strange. Anyhow, it works, it works well, and it does things that Dashboard doesn't. If you're new to YWE/Konfabulator, I recommend you browse the widget gallery, see if there's anything that looks useful, and try out those widgets. [alert admin]

Chax 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Makes iChat AV windows float and more!

I've been looking all over for some way to make iChat AV video chat windows float. Chax does that. It's awesome. Also lets you customize the buddy list, add dock notifications of background chat invites, gets rid of the "do you want to start this chat?" message, and otherwise lets you customize stuff in iChat to your liking. Only criticism: No real documentation. A simple read-me would do the trick. Great little program, and the price (donationware) is right! This is a must-have iChat utility! [alert admin]

Super Oda Dice Roller 0.5b (Mac OS X)

0.5b had a few bugs,they're fixed now

If you downloaded v0.5b immediately after it was posted, it had a couple bugs surrounding Growl (like asking for it incessantly until you installed Growl!). These bugs have been fixed. You can re-download from the same link and get the new version. [alert admin]

Check Off 3.2 (Mac OS X)

Simple, tidy, effective task management

Wonderful way to create a persistent, attractive to-do list. This is not for the feature-hungy, but if you just want to be able to add tasks, check them off, and get on with your day, Check Off handles it beautifully. I have not been able to replicate the data loss issues mentioned below. Through numerous restarts, my to-do list was saved. [alert admin]

Flock 0.4.8 (Mac OS X)

Ouch! Beta!

This software says it's beta and it ain't lying. It beachballs frequently, lots of windows fail to resize/scroll so you lose content while you type into 'em, the RSS bookmarking/reading feature is pretty well broken, and performance is hurky jerky from fast to pitifully slow depending on what buttons you push. This isn't "Google Beta", this is the real deal. That said, it's a great idea. It's a community-centeric web browser with built in blogging, RSS reading, collaborative bookmarks via De.lico.us, flickr support, and all that wonderful stuff that makes Mozilla fun. (Plug ins! Get yer plug ins!) If you're a Web 2.0 hipster (or hipster wanna be) this is THE KILLER APP! It's got a ways to go, but boy, I keep using it as though the more pages I visit and the more I WISH it were stable, the better it would become. It isn't working. I guess I'll just submit a couple dozen bug reports. A+ for idea, D for actual product. But it's in beta, so go easy. [alert admin]

Linotype FontExplorer X 1.0fc2 (Mac OS X)

Great font manager, great font store

Linotype's taken a page from Apple's iTunes experience and they're offering the font manager for free with the addition of a font storefront built-in to the application. On the up side, it's an excellent font manager. There is no longer any excuse for using Font Book (yeeech!) given that this program's out there and it's free. It manages large sets of fonts without barfing (I'm looking at you, Suitcase!) and is fairly flexible in how a user wishes to manage their fonts (i.e. organize them yourself and import them for activation, or manage them entirely within Font Explorer's confines). The font store is great. It's a fabulous way to browse fonts, and it even lets you type samples in the store's font in whatever colors and size you care to view it in. That's the best font preview I've seen anywhere, bar none. The same previewing is available for your own fonts, and it's just as fast and useful as FontAgent or Suitcase. Plug-ins are provided for auto-activation, and it can also intercept "generic" font calls from other OS X applications. Better still, you can enable/disable this function in applications of your choice. (Nice to keep MS Word's font cache from getting out of control.) Only thing it doesn't do that FontAgent Pro (my gold standard of font management) does is detailed reporting and repair of fonts. It will mark a font as bad, but that's it. FontAgent does a great triage of your font library. [alert admin]

ProjectsManager 0.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Umm... huh... Yup...

Pretty weak. I mean, hey, making a list with two date fields and a project name and description is kind of neat, I guess, but it hardly qualifies as a 1.0 software release. Keep trying! [alert admin]

OmniGraffle Pro 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Stunningly good

When I want to make PC users jealous of my Mac, I show them OmniGraffle. This program turns a usually laborious task into a simple pleasure. Charting is effortless and the results are top-notch. The new version is a major upgrade and adds a host of wonderful improvements. I can now use OmniGraffle readily in a design environment thanks to master pages and SVG export. The outline view makes creating large, complex structures easy, and the new palettes ease up the screen real estate on my 12" PB. Wonderful program which just keeps getting better. One of the few programs I'd give five stars to. Go Omnigroup! [alert admin]

FlashCard Quizzer 1.2.3 (Mac OS X)

There are better options out there

This program does what it says, but it's a bit on the ugly side and there's plenty of better options. Check out iFlash, Genius and Cerebral Imprint. The latter two are just as free and work a ton better. [alert admin]

That's Unicode's fault

Because the MacOS X version of Symbol is a unicode font, the greek characters live outside of the regular character range found on your keyboard. The easiest way to type them in is to use the Font Panel from the keyboard menu. It ain't Omni's fault, in any case.

Spot colors in OG (or any CMYK app)

Just substitute black and cyan or black, cyan and magenta (if you're doing a 3 color job) for your spot colors. Instruct your printer to substitute the right spot inks for the K and C plates and you're all set.

Print to PDF isn't the same as native PDF support!

The new version of Filemaker will let you not only print to PDF, but also add proper metadata, security, and script the output of your PDF. So with one click you can, for example, create a PDF invoice for a client, email it, and secure it against editing. Granted, with a host of Automator actions I could do nearly the same thing, but I'd still have to take action in a print dialog if not elsewhere…

That's not true at all

There Konfabulator widgets that integrate with all manner of other programs. You'll find widgets that interact with Mail, iCal, Entourage, Safari, iTunes (dear lord, save me from iTunes widget overload!), iChat and others! There's nothing inherently more integrated about Dashboard than there is in Konfabulator. Both, through various means, can hook into Apple Events, AppleScript, and the command line (including shell scripts). Any of these means can be used to communicate with other programs.

You don't need Tiger!

If you have a drive around that still boots into Panther, there's nothing stopping you from creating a Panther BootCD with the new TechTool and Diskwarrior and whatever else on it. It'll still work great for repairing Tiger-based systems.
