Symantec Norton AntiVirus 10.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Deceptive Rebate

The $30 rebate offered on the packaging is not a rebate at all, but a upgrade/cross-grade refund, not the same thing at all. You only qualify for the "rebate" if you have proof of prior purchase of the norton product or a competitor's. Apart from the bad taste left by this sleazy marketing tactic (when will software manufacturers realize "rebates" create mostly negative goodwill?), I must say the program works smoothly, and it is less intrusive than the prior Mac versions. Also, score some points for a printed (NOT pdf) manual, albeit thinly written and padded. I have it because I deal with Windows users in my business, and giving them a virus-laden file definitely creates negative goodwill!! My concern with ClamX is where do they get the resources to do the research to identify the viruses? Symantec obviously has cash flow. [alert admin]

Monolingual 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Do NOT use for Adobe!!!

There is a not-very-prominent warning about excluding Adobe apps from this utility's cleaning (removing un-needed language files will prevent the app from opening, and re-installation is REQUIRED!!!). It is too, too true. It wrecked my Acrobat Professional before I saw the warning & was able to stop it. Yes, you can uninstall the remnants & re-install, or try to figure out what files need to be re-installed through Pacifist, but who needs that? The developer needs to make the warning far more prominent, and exclusion window clearer. Too bad, because Adobe is loaded with these never-to-be used, bloated language files. Otherwise, has been a very useful utility for me [alert admin]

Myallo 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Had to Trash It;

This app started to convert all my preference files to its own, making them useless - about 1000! - before I stopped it. Tiger 10.4.7 [alert admin]

StuffIt Deluxe 10.0 (Mac OS X)

Did not convince me

Allume's description of v10 hardly compels one to rush them your $$$ for an upgrade, not to mention a first-time purchase. Given the rep they are building for unnecessary paid upgrades, you'd think they'd work harder to hype what they've put out, even if they don't actually add substantial features. Won't v9 do just fine for now for most users? It's a utility, not a status symbol; you don't need a new one every season!! [alert admin]

OCSmart Hacks 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Not too much bang for the buck

Given that the entire Mac OS system with gazillions of features is $129, it is hard to see how this collection of a a few nice features (not essential to most users) bumps the value of the OS up 22.4%. Yes, they are nice, and the app was not associated with any system problems for me in its beta form, but I will do without, [alert admin]

Mercury Messenger 1709_RC13c (Mac OS X)

It Works, That's more than MSN

Messenger 5.o would not run for me, did not recognize my password. Tired of waiting for support to email back, I am already old enough. Interface is a little simple yes, but the read me is unusually detailed and helpful. It looks like it will do the basic job, and certainly has more features than the MS effort. [alert admin]

sunPATH 1.6.2 (Mac OS X)

Look for

the info, it is in the website, you do have to dig a bit though. The program replaces - & I am sure is more accurate - than a rotating wheel calculator last made decades ago, and adds features like the time the sun will shine through a window on a given day. For pricing, go to the "store". Howver, you should know that if you already own a version of Starry Night you can get much of the same info, plus moon rise/set. [alert admin]

Notre Dame de Paris theme pack 1.0 (Mac OS X)

the one negative review here

is of the kind (uninformed) that made me want to download the screensaver. I did, and it it quite excellent. Black borders are the simple universal solution to images which do not fit into the screen aspect ratio. [alert admin]

DisplayConfigX 0.96 (Mac OS X)

Yes, it does do what it says it will...but...

on my dual monitor setup, it also shifts each screen display 4-5 inches to the left, leaving a large black band on the right & losing 20% or so of each desktop. No response from developer after 2 weeks. Oh, well. No problem disabling. [alert admin]

Not essential for Core Life Functions...

...but makes the time at the keyboard way more fun. It has functionality, too- I've added different sounds to the function keys, so I know, without looking, if I hear a <miaow> that I've hit control, instead of say the <woof> for option. I agree with most of the suggestions for options in the next edition; it could use a bit more flexibility. For those of you griping about the price, just understand the funds should be coming out of the entertainment budget, not the lunch money or rent, ok? [alert admin]

Oh my. No wonder my dual 450 G4 doesn't do well with this anymore. Activity monitor showed it using up 40% of CPU just just hanging out in idle!!!

Naughty no more!

Still, a definite pain. No easy way to see what's been attacked; my machine has about 1700 files ending in ".0" alone - not all are carbon apps - & I am not going to manually sift through them & neither File Buddy or Finder has an "opens with" search term. You just have to wait for the weirdness to happen.
