Wavepad Audio Editor 3.12 (Mac OS X)

looks like a rewrite of Audacity

Uses 90% of cpu cycles to display frequency analysis, too. (G4, 1.67MHz, last PPC PB made, running 10.4.11) I had to force quit. I couldn't even properly resize windows after that or quit the window. [alert admin]

SMARTReporter 2.3.2 (Mac OS X)

calls home to update / not a problem

You can turn off autoupdating in the prefs. It places itself in Login Items so it will be running for the user at startup. I could have used this app earlier. My eMac power supply failed intermittent and I didn't know if it was the hd or something else. I don't think Apple will support firewire SMART status. FW drives are 'network' devices. For the home user, it's your network. In a business, that may not be so, and having that kind of info might be considered a security risk. [alert admin]

SWF & FLV Player 3.5.12.5930 (Mac OS X)

free version works fine for playback

If you want to save from utube get Firefox and 'Unplug' plugin. The get_video.flv file is the one to save to disc. [alert admin]

NotePad 2.6b1 (Mac OS X)

works for me, never used the OS 9 version

I have a ppc G4 powerbook and 10.4.9 I don't know why no one has done this since the original. It is much less cluttering to have the pages stacked like that. [alert admin]

Product claims are unpossible

Ripping a dvd is difficult enough. Ripping and transcoding on a Mac to all of those formats is not possible. I wouldn't try this for free. Visit videohelp.com, register and ask questions. There are free tools to rip and transcode for Mac, but it isn't as easy and just a mouse click. Visit ripdifferent.com forums, register and there are more helps. MTR latest version isn't free, but it is very good. Be careful if you live in US. There is no 'fair use' to make backup of commercial dvds. [alert admin]

PDFtoHTML 0.1b (Mac OS X)

assumes directory is root of hd

otherwise you must type the full path as in Users/user name/desktop/folder/pdf name. It will not drop and drag on a PPC G4 in Panther. [alert admin]

FireStarter FX 1.0b8 (Mac OS X)

actually have beta v9

The Version Tracker dropdown menu doesn't show the version I have. It 'expired' so I just set the clock back, same fix as Gibson's aspi_me. Toast will burn iso's but it cost money. It works fine. [alert admin]

OpenOffice.org 2.0 (Mac OS X)

script runs fine much easier to install than earlier versions

There is no separate startup script for version 2. The entire app IS an executable script. I have version 1.0 and 2.0 both in my Applications folder and both run fine. To install copy the dmg to your desktop and double click to mount. Drag the OO icon to your applications folder. Drag the icon from the app folder to your dock. Click to start and WAIT. OO opens a very large swap file, which takes some time. I have a 1.25 GHz G4 emac with 1 GB ram. It takes about 10 seconds for the script to call X11 and another 5 seconds to begin OO. The first time you run it you must agree to the eula and give it your name. Registration is not required. [alert admin]

Much Improved

AudioExtractor freeware will rip the audio from a dvd. It requires VLC, also free to rip from a commercial dvd. Get it here: http://homepage.mac.com/andreaepicoco/software.html Andrea Epicoco also has other freeware, including Tele2DVD that will take mp2 video files and without recoding, make a dvd dmg that burned as an image file is tabletop dvd playable.

Icon made into a black square with image on top

Mac icons are square. The various sizes for Windows and Mac OS icons and color depth are here: http://www.axialis.com/tutorials/tutorial-whatsanicon.html If the image you dragged into EasyBake is not square, then it will be padded with black to make it the correct size. That's where the 'black bars' you have came from.

Works poorly

It's still very "BETA." I played with it for a while. It assumes the directory is the root of the hd. If you type the full path as 'Users/user name/folder/pdf name it will work. If the folder is on your desktop then /Desktop/ must be in the path between user name and folder. There is no drop and drag in spite of what the author says. Typing the path is a huge pitb. You can save time…
