Jing 1.3.2913 (Mac OS X)

Slick, easy-to-use tool

I'm a librarian and when I get a question about a procedure that's complicated to explain over the phone or by e-mail, Jing is the perfect solution (unless the patron doesn't have internet access). It's easy to use and takes only a few seconds to demonstrate something, upload it, and send the link to the patron. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.0b (Mac OS X)

Refuses to install

I've got the latest version of Tiger, but Safari refuses to install. Ironically it was fine on my Windows computer at work, although it had trouble with Java. [alert admin]

Road Trip Effect Pro 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Geographically Challenged

The map for Canada and the US includes about 1/3 of Canada, omitting the upper 2/3. It also is missing part of the maritime provinces and all of Newfoundland. If you drag the trip indicator off the top edge of the map, it appears at the bottom. Good luck trying to show a flight from Vancovuer to Inuvik. [alert admin]

DEVONagent 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

I really wanted this program to work.

However, I found it very slow -- even on a fast LAN connection with a relative new Mac, simple searches take several minutes. If the results had been worth the wait I would have been happy to wait and pay for Devonagent, but I found they were often irrelevant or of minor interest. Contrary to what the developers say in the Devonagent manual, most search engines do allow you to use advanced search features such as boolean operators (AND OR NOT) and proximity searching. My advice: save your money, download a copy of the Google Guide from http://www.googleguide.com/pdf/googleguide.pdf, work through the exercises, and learn to use all the hidden power of Google. EndNote 9.0 (Mac OS X)

Endnote's getting it right

I have used Endnote versions 2, 5, and 6. Generally, the higher the number, the worse the program functioned. I had no intention upgrading again, and had switched to Bookends (itself a very good product). However, the lure of cross-platform integration was too strong and I found myself using Endnote 9. After years of suffering through bloated, buggy software, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Endnote 9 seems to have put to rest most of the problems caused (possibly) by shifting to OSX. The program is fast (I’m using it with Word Office X on a 1.5 GHz Powerbook). To test its speed, I imported 5000 references (including keywords and abstracts) I downloaded from an online database. The file was 6.4 MB, but took less than 4 minutes to import. Even with such a large number of references, it sorts and scrolls quickly. In the year I’ve been using it, it has yet to crash. A welcome feature for multi-lingual researchers is its support for Unicode. It is not without its quirks, though. When exporting lists of references to my Word document, I find it uses a random mixture of serif and sans-serif fonts, something which is annoying, but not time consuming to reformat. I also find it annoying that when entering information about an online source the URL box is always far enough down on the list that I have to scroll down to find it. It would seem to make sense to have the URL for Web documents near the top, as it’s always included whereas date and author often are not. Nonetheless, the makers of Endnote are to be congratulated for sticking with the Mac OS and finally creating a solid OSX version of their program. [alert admin]

Opera 9.02 (Mac OS X)

Loads significantly faster

The previous version of Opera took forever to load. This update seems to have solved that. It loaded on my 1.5 ghz PB in about 5 seconds. Opera also handles pdf files much better than Safari does. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Excellent

It's solved the problems I had with logging in on wireless networks. It also seems much faster. No stability problems here. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 7.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Hopeless Update Process

Adobe needs to learn from Apple (instead of Microsoft) how to apply software updates. It took many tries, with error messages that the software was outside the version required for the update, before I finally got update 7.0.3 to work. Even now it says I have version 7.0.1. [alert admin]

EndNote 8.0 (Mac OS X)

I switched to Bookends

After encountering many of the same problems that other users have detailed below, I switched to Bookends. I also e-mailed the president of Thompson to give him my reasons why. The online form is available at http://thomsonresearchsoft.com/contact/president/ I'm not sure it will change anything, but it made me feel better. [alert admin]

Reunion still state-of-the-art?

I'm still waiting for a Unicode version so I can dump my last OS9 program (Reunion 6). It would be a waste of money to buy the current version as I can't enter the names of my wife's side of the family in Reunion 8. Depending on your definition of "state of the art" and your needs, you may wish to look elsewhere.

I really wanted this program to work.

I realize it's searching several search engines, but my point is I can use Google, limit my search using advanced operators, do my search, find something useful, and have read half of it by the time DevonAgent comes up with less than stellar results.

Default pdf viewer in Safari 2.0.1

You can still select a default pdf viewer. Click on a pdf document icon (but don't double click to open it). Choose "Get Information" and then choose "Open With" (whichever viewer you want).
