Ready-Set-Do! 1.4.3 (Mac OS X)

Can't get 142 to install AND can't get 143 to DL!

I DL’d (supposedly) 143, unzipped it and moved the resultant folder to the Desktop where I opened it. I then saw the file “Version History 1.4.2.rtf” and wondered if I’d gotten 142 instead of 143. I then 2clicked on “Ready-Set-Do! Installer” and away it went... After a few moments, this notice appeared: Finder got an error: Can't get item " " of folder "Ready-Set-Do! Folder" of folder Desktop of folder "username" of folder "Users" of startup disk. After clicking the OK button, this notice appeared: A warning window completely void of any TEXT. On the left was a triangular yellow icon, with an centered exclamation-mark and a smaller Finder icon on top of it. The button that was there had absolutely no indication (text) as to what pressing it might do. After clicking the “blank” button, the script stopped. I then went through the “manual” installation STEP-BY-STEP and at some point, a notice informed me that I STILL had to run something(?) to get authorization, serial# or something important to get it all to work. The above 2 notices came up again. I gave up!!! [alert admin]

TechTool Pro 5.0.4 (Mac OS X)

WT?

"Upgrade to TechTool Pro 5 from any prior version of TechTool Pro or Drive 10. ***Requires prior Drive 10 or TechTool Pro v2, v3 or v4 serial number when ordering." If you carefully read the description on Micromat's site (above), you'll see that you need NO MORE THAN a version 4 serial number. Logically, this "should" mean if you wish to upgrade from version (2, 3,) 4 to version 5(.0.4)... Been there, done that! I most assuredly have version 5 and I even paid to upgrade to it! So, why is there no mention of an "update" to version 5??? I already have an e-drive set up with my version 5 on it! It would be a simple "update" to do. So, Micromat, why should I purchase an already purchased upgrade when I do not need a startup DVD? Where's the file to download to (only) update my version 5 files to the most current version, 5.0.4??? To put it another way, version 5 is dated 1/31/2009 (on VT) and version 5.0.4 is dated 4/19/2009 (on VT) which is 79 days apart. 79 days divided by the cost of 5.0.4, $59, plus $7(?) s&h, and including the original upgrade cost of another $59 & $7(?), total $132, comes frighteningly close to an annualized cost of about... $610.00. FolderBrander 2.2.4 (Mac OS X)

No more blue folders

Using FB to add text to a folder-icon is perfect for doing just that to any plain folders you have in your "dock." No more hovering the mouse/cursor just to see the name. This helps when dragging an item from the Finder. You can now drag directly into the folder whose name you now see (provided the Dock is not in hide & seek mode). If you do have the Dock in H&S mode, simply drag back & forth along the screen-edge, then, move the cursor over the (now) named folder-icon and release. [alert admin]

TopCalculette Pro 7.0 (Mac OS X)

I have no problems with...

TCPro7 and 10.5. At a startup or restart, it loads, fetches currency rates and hides itself. Any time later, it is summoned with a click on the Dock icon and it pops up promptly. [alert admin]

OpenOffice.org 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Why present 2.1 as being available?

On the OOo website, version 2.1 only comes in French and Italian! German is still at version 2.0.3 and the English version is still at version 2.0.4, from October of this year. [alert admin]

Port Authority Aqua 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Why?

I really don't use the "aquafied" version. X11 works for me, even with its quirks. But, mostly, I've begun to just use the Terminal. One thing that should be fixed, if not already, is:

When you initiate any download with dependencies, via Terminal or X11 (don't know about Aqua) versions, the "process" should NOT automatically download ANY dependencies that match System or /usr/local "current" executables/librairies, etc. When upgrading (ONLY!) an already installed port, you can use the "-n" option ["don't follow dependencies in upgrade (only for upgrading)"], per the port man-page. Nudge 1.1 (Mac OS X)

A step backwards!

I've used version 1.01, probably since it appeared on the scene. I give it 5 stars. Version 1.1, at least for me, is one GIANT leap backward now with its changing the file modification date. The "file modification date" should be, and should always be, the date that *** I *** modify/save the CONTENTS of the file.

Nudge's "description" says it all: "CM nudges Finder to update file/folder info display." UPDATE, not change it.

I can recommend 1.01, but, I'm going to stay away from 1.1. I STILL find the occaisional need for it. [alert admin]

QuicKeys X 3.1 (Mac OS X)

One feature I've been waiting for.

In the Shortcuts:Quickeys:Wait sub-menu, you have several choices - Wait for: Application; Button; Date & Time; Menu; User and Window.

I would love to see one more: Wait for Text in Terminal.

Recently, a StartupItem that's been working for me for a few years just stopped working (after upgrading to OS X 10.4.#). I tried turning it into a launchd item with no success. After 15-20 various methods, I ended up using QK3.1 and designed a shortcut that would accomplish opening the Terminal; PAUSE; enter text "su"; PAUSE; enter my admin password; PAUSE;etcetera... I think you get the idea.

All of the "pause" commands in the shortcut have short times - .3 to.5 seconds each. After running the Terminal commands "manually" and taking note of the next prompt-line/output text, I believe that any shortcut would gain a flow/speed benefit by NOT using trial & error PAUSEs, but instead using a Wait for Text in Terminal sub-shortcut.

And, BTW, why can't QK Terminal commands be run as root? The shortcut I use for my above problem works after switching from "user" to "root" USING QK!

One more thing. How about being able to run a terminal command IN THE BACKGROUND and/or "silently."

Recommendation; Beg, borrow, steal or even buy it (mostly, you should buy it!). It's a great time/wrist-saver. [alert admin]

Why?

When I do a manual/normal install (config/make/install), the "configure" step prints "checking" messages in Terminal. Occasionally, I see something like "resolv.h found, but, can not be compiled..." (the dependency of an installed file that is used in the config & build of the target file). Obviously, the config-process has a way of checking whether or not it can utilize a particular (header-)file. Couldn't something like this be implemented? Say, a little version-test to see if…

REALLY Shut Down!

Try this. Save as AppleScript script:

ignoring application responses
tell application "loginwindow" to «event aevtshut»
end ignoring

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This script comes with OnMyCommand (http://www.abracode.com/free/cmworkshop/on_my_command.html).

HTH.
