MeshWrite 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)
It says something when a piece of software is presented almost every day as being revised. MeshWrong claims to be a next-generation software. I sure hope this is not what the future looks like. The interface is klutzy. Utility is lacking. It is unnecessarily oblique while at the same time lacking in function. Recommend this? Hell no! Since this is my second post, some readers might think that I am entering into a vendetta. Nothing could be further from the truth. I don't know the authors of the software, I just find it repugnant when amateurish efforts are presented as expert. [alert admin]

Apple Pages 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
I admit it, as a confirmed Quark and Mellel user, and a frequent if reluctant MS Word victim, the last thing I needed on my powerbook was yet another word processor, but after only a few hours use, I was hooked. Pages has a few faults (slow opens and saves, and continued use of that silly fonts box) but many, many virtues. I'm finding myself no longer using Mellel, using Quark half as often, and using Word not at all! My work goes back and forth between academic writing (for which Pages seems ideal) and a sideline in graphics layout and design. For the larger scale layout projects I still use Quark, but for in-house projects, I'm finding myself more and more relying on Pages. It's by no means a Quark killer, but for anything being produced without sophisticated color management it often suffices. My five part wish list (in priority order): Dump the font box and fully integrate all font functions into the Inspector. Implement (as did Mellel) a character styles function. Integrate this into the styles drawer. Improve opening and saving speeds. And finally- for the sake of us who live and die with our powerbooks, let us adjust the size of the inspector boxes. Thanks Apple, for a great product. [alert admin]

BroadbandOptimizer 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Works well with Firefox and OSX 1.4
This little program more than doubled my download speed using firefox (6800 kilobits per second to 16000 kilobits per second), but had no discernable effect at all when using Safari (which remained at 6800 kilobits per second). I measured using several download meters over several days and receieved roughly the same results pretty consistently. All I can say is thanks- I love it when its faster to download a 20mb file than it is to run it through stuffit expander! [alert admin]

DeepVacuum 0.90 (Mac OS X)
Over the lst few months I've been using web dump to download fairly large, mostly text oriented web sites (70 to 150 mb size range). i've been very disappointed in the programs speed (or rather, it snail like pace). I just downloded DeepVacuum and downloaded 2 sites- 1 totalling 120mb and the other close to 190mb. What might easily have been a failed overnight project was done very quickly (25-30 minutes?) without detectable any errors. Setup - Titanium at 800mghz OSX 10.3.2 Comcast cable modem A big thanks to the creators! David [alert admin]

Tofu 0.3.1 (Mac OS X)
I'm already using this program frequently and longing for it to work with more file types. While there seem to be a few glitches with column widths and scrolling, the basic structure and implementation is great. The core idea of horizontal scrolling is brilliant! [alert admin]

Novice or pro, this is not the place for willy-nilly experimentation. All should be held to the same standard: useful, safe and effective software. Additionally any software project should meet an unmet need. If you can't do it better than existing programs, it shouldn't be done at all. This last injunction covers this program well- the inclusion of a useless speech to text engine does nothing to help matters. Users who need speech to…
