Timbuktu Pro 8.5 (Mac OS X)
The new version is as stable and solid as earlier versions, and the new features are very useful. I especially like the new security and screen-blaking options. Timbuktu just keeps getting better each release. I've used the free VNC, and while you can't beat its price, Timbuktu is so much faster and more stable that it is worth paying for if you need remote control to support users are manager a server. Eudora 6.2b4 (Mac OS X)
Here's what's actually new in 6.2
What's New in Eudora 6.2 Emoticons Emoticons are characters used to indicate emotion or expression. In Internet communication, emoticons such as smiley faces can add an extra level of context to email messages. See the <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/manuals.html>New Features Guide for more information about using emoticons. ScamWatch Many email scams use misleading URLs to trick users into clicking their links. What appears to be a legitimate web site address often hides a malicious URL link. Eudora now features URL protection, which makes it easy to determine if a URL is legitimate before you click on it. You will be warned if the URL is potentially deceptive. See the <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/manuals.html>New Features Guide for more information about ScamWatch Enhanced IMAP support Eudora 6.2 speeds up deletion of IMAP message and ads better support for working offline. When an IMAP message is deleted, it is immediately hidden from view. At a later time, all messages marked for deletion are removed from the server at one time. This allows IMAP messages to be deleted when you do not have an active connection to the mail server. See the <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/manuals.html>New Features Guide for more information about IMAP improvements Launch iChat directly from the Eudora Address Book You can now innitiate an iChat with someone in your Eudora Address Book. Highlight an entry in your Address Book. If that user has a username listed in the iChat field under the Home tab, the iChat button will be enabled next to the To:, Cc: and Bcc: buttons. Clicking that button will launch iChat and open a new chat window with that user. Again, see the <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/manuals.html>New Features Guide for more information about ichat from within Eudora. Live Search Open Search windows are now updated when new mail arrives. Thus you can think of search windows as 'Virtual Mailboxes'. For example, leave a search window open for "Status is unread" and the results of that search will continually update to show you all your unread mail. Dock Icon shows the number of unread messages in Eudora The icon in the Dock will now show the number of unread messages in open mailboxes. This is helpful if you have Eudora hidden and mail arrives into an open mailbox, or a filter moves mail to a mailbox and opens that mailbox. The lower-right corner of the icon will change to show the number of unread messages in these open mailboxes. You can use <x-eudora-setting:396> to adjust this feature. Improved SSL compatibility Eudora 6.2 provides greater compatibility and improved handling of SSL connections. [alert admin]

Timbuktu Pro 7.0.3 (Mac OS X)
A nice solid point release for a nice solid piece of software. [alert admin]

The new software distribution system is amazing. It is like having your own Apple Software Update for your systems, except that you are the one in control of setting what software to update and install. I love how you just define your software packages and sit back and let the update system handle the rest automatically. This is revolutionary on the Mac and is worth the price of admission on its own, never mind all of the other things netOctopus can do! [alert admin]

The updater app starts promisingly enough, but when it comes time to insert my retail 3.0 CD, it says that it cannot find the original CD and bails. This, combined with theother complains here make me think Alsoft rushed this out with no QA. [alert admin]

IntelliScanner Collector 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
This software (which comes with a USB UPC scanner) is very good, but has some serious feature holes. First the good: ease of use is incredible, the UI is mostly excellent, it looks beautiful, and unlike some of its competitors, it manages to fin a "hit" for almost everything I've thrown at it so far, even old and out of print books almost always comes up with information. The downsides: No cancel button in the individual editing pane means if you mess something up, you are stuck with it, unless you want to delete the whole entry or manually correct it. Also, there is no easy way to sub-categorieze books by genre, and no way to change what criteria are shown in the main database window (you get author, title, and rating, and that's it). Also, things slow down a bit when you get a hige database...it woul dbe nice if there were ways to filter the database inline. That said, this is a very solid 1.0.x release, and I expect most of my complaints will get addressed in future releases. [alert admin]

Free is cool, and since this is officially MS supports this it works fairly well. However, if you are going to connect to Windows boxes more then on a very ocassional basis, it is much better to shell out some cash and geting something like Timbuktu, which is a lot more powerful, and has a lot more security and features going between Macs and PCs. Timbuktu Pro 7.0 (Mac OS X)
Awesome! 7.0 is the best Timbuktu upgrade in years....really takes advantage of OS X. I've tried VNC and it doesn't hold a candle to Timbuktu. I guess you get what you pay for!
The new Profile feature alone is worth the price of admission. Add that with the remote control improvements and this is a real winner of an upgrade.
FYI direct link to the upgrade page is:

Why don't you rip on Timbuktu for not letting you edit photographs or word-process book-length documents, while you are at it? I mean, as long as you are downgrading it for not having irrelevent features that you personally seem to think shoul dbe there. Hey, I think Timbuktu should really be a 1st-person shooter video game...I'm gonna rate it zero stars because it's not! Here's a clue for you: Timbuktu is Remote Control software...you know, it…
