OpenOffice.org 3.0b1 (Mac OS X)
WARNING: changes file associations
Installing this changed the default file associations for office documents, without any warning (that I saw). That's unacceptable, particularly for beta software. I also noted that it truncated the left-most character on one slide of text when that text was too big for the bounding box. dvve [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2004 11.5.0 (Mac OS X)
1. This looks like it'll fix some real-world bugs I've had with Office 2004 for -a long time-. 2. It includes the OOXML stuff. (I've been using NeoOffice and/or iWork to open them, and also pointing out to the sender that those formats are not approved where I work.) 3. And it's a COMBO RELEASE! I got it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B6D69814-0995-490D-909A-5EC6AE6F64F0&displaylang=en [alert admin]

Microsoft Expression Media 2.0.1477.0 (Mac OS X)

I figured, "OK, let me check this out" and I downloaded the 2.0 version. It doesn't tell you that this requires a paid upgrade to E.M 1 (which I have from when Microsoft bought the product.) When I check out the license status and enter in my key, it's invalid. (OK, that's not a real surprise if this is a new version.) I click on the link to buy online, and try to figure out what I'd get for my USD$100 upgrade. There's a link on the website entitled "Why Upgrade?" I click on it, and instead of some reasonable web content, the damn thing wants me to download Silverlight. NO THANK YOU, MICROSOFT! I don't think I'd accept Silverlight if it were part of a -free- upgrade to the product. I'm sure as hell not going to download that just to find out why I should send you more money. Guess it's time to move to Aperture or Lightroom. Anyone want a Expression Media 1.0 license? dave [alert admin]

GetDilbert 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)
GetDilbert stopped getting the latest Dilbert strip about 2 weeks ago. This is too bad, since I "depend" on this when I'm traveling. dave [alert admin]

Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 (Mac OS X)
If you double-click an attachment to launch it with an application, this version of Thunderbird continues to have the BUG that the file is saved to the desktop. It ignores the preference for 'save attachments to ...' in this case (and in fact it's not clear to me what effect that preference setting has in any case...) This is so annoying that I've had to change how I handle email attachments. They're all set to "save to file", and I leave Thunderbird, go to my saved attachment directory, and launch them manually from there. This is less annoying than having my desktop contaminated with tons of attachments. This has been reported as a bug, but the Thunderbird team shows no signs of fixing it. The expected behavior would be for Thunderbird to save the attachment in the directory specified by the preference setting for "attachments -> save all attachments to this folder", and then to launch the application. Mail.app hasn't scaled up to hold the volume of messages I process and archive. Thunderbird does handle large mailboxes, although searching in particular is painfully slow, and Thunderbird stores all messages/mailbox in a single file (versus in a directory with separate files, as does Mail.app.) This makes Thunderbird mailboxes not particularly useful/helpful for Spotlight searching (and increases the pain associated with Thunderbird's own search). Additionally, Thunderbird doesn't support user-level multitasking very well. There's no easy way (is there a way at all?) to have a search going in one window, and still read mail in another window while that search is grinding on. Additionally, the main reason I switched to Thunderbird is that I needed a mailer to handle PKI certificates and encrypted email. Thunderbird is acceptable at this, although it decided arbitrarily a couple of months ago that my own cert was no good, and I ended up having to get another cert to replace it. Boy, do I ever miss Eudora! With all its warts, in-application searching was fast, it handled large mailboxes really well, it had more filter options than either Thunderbird or Mail.app (although the filter user interface left something to be desired...) The bogosity currently labeled "Eudora" is no substitute... dave [alert admin]

I installed the QuickTime update and X.5.2 together. No problems, but it rebooted itself -twice- before coming up and giving me a prompt the 3rd time. (But see my posting on Leopard Graphis Update for what happened next...) All-in-all, no problems noted immediately after installation. I did run Permissions Repair on both Server and a client, and they both returned the same warnings. dave [alert admin]

OK on Intel MBP, problem on G5/2ghz DP (Server) ![]()

Installed with no problems (and no particular visible effect) on my MacBook Pro. However, on my G5/2ghz DP machine running Leopard Server: I installed the latest Quicktime update and X.5.2 Server update. After 2 extra reboots, no problems, and software update launched. Then I downloaded and installed Leopard Graphics Update (this app). The machine rebooted, the screen went blank, and the G5's fans went into Jet Assisted Takeoff mode, they were screaming! I let this run for about 30 seconds, and manually turned off the machine. I let things cool down for a minute or so, rebooted the machine, and it came up just fine. Running Permissions Repair and Verify Disk (Disk Utility) showed no problems, and so far it's running OK. This is not the first time an Apple update has put the fans on full blast, I'm not sure what's going on. But I can assure you that those fans will get your attention... Anyone know what this really does? dave [alert admin]

TuneConnect 1.1 (Mac OS X)
I've tried 4 or 5 iTunes remote applications, including the one that I've been running reliably for a while, and they all break with AppleScript errors. My guess is something in iTunes itself changed. Anyone else seeing this problem? dave [alert admin]

WARNING: changes file associations
I don't know what Open Office did during installation, but no matter how many times I tell the Mac "Open .ppt with Microsoft PowerPoint, do this for all files of this type", many files are still marked with Open Office as the default application. So I trashed Open Office. -I- (and not the Open Office developers) will decide which damn application to use to open a file. I wonder what else Open Office has…

Updates to Credit where it's due dept
Well, it does fix at least one problem in PowerPoint rendering images that it previously render (such as my project's title slide graphic :-) It's still painfully slow in rendering, but better slow than "not" or "crash". So after 2 days of usage, so-far-so-good. You have to install the OOXML interpreters as a separate download. But they do seem to work. I got an .xlsx document that the OOXML interpreters opened in…

I did that and it doesn't work for 'launch application' That's exactly how I would -expect- it to work, but that's not how it -does work-, at least not on my computer. What that does do is provide the -default- location if the action is 'save to disk'. dave

"Who needs this?" is not a fair comment
Not a fair comment: 1. I have about 1k CDs myself, but I don't have the storage space to have them all lined up alphabetically. (Besides, how do you catalog them, particularly classical? By performer? By composer? What about albums with multiple composers and multiple performers?) 2. With respect to books, I don't know how many books I have, but they're spread all across the house. A…

It's weird, but the place to change your mailer preferences is from Mail.app. So open Mail.app, open its application preferences, and make sure Entourage (if that's what you want) is selected as the default mail application. dave

I use NeoOffice to work around Office bugs
For what it's worth, I routinely get PowerPoint presentations from Windows Office that won't display graphics correctly and Word documents that crash Word when you try to print them. NeoOffice has been my savior, displaying graphics that PowerPoint won't and printing documents that Word won't. dave

it would be interesting to determine how many new users Aquamacs brings to Emacs, vs old Emacs hands (and I have the carpal tunnel to prove it :-) that appreciate having this tool to use on their Macs. My bet is that number of previous Emacs users >> new users. dave

is this update also for OS 10.4 Intel?
Office is not Intel-native, so you install the PPC update and run it under emulation. (I.e. install the PPC update and don't worry about it...)

All I want is a convenient way to upload a schedule to my controller. WIth Parallels, I can now run the klugy stuff that came with the controller, so I can turn two sets of lights on at 5:30AM/off at 8:30AM or Sunrise +30, and turn them back on at Sunset - 30 or 5:30PM and off again at 11:00PM. Now Perceptive Automation could build both goodwill and some income stream by providing a simple…
