Proxifier 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Suddenly a whole bunch of things start working when using this, and I like that it can be run without the user having admin access. The Rule configuration is easy and flexible, and just works. The only thing(s) I would want changed is separation of some of the user details. For example, I would like to be able to deploy this to desktops, already configured (the same server and rule settings applied to all users, just as Apple's System Preferences proxy settings apply to all users), and not have to describe to the user where they need to enter their username/password. Whether that means prompting the user as Proxifier starts, or prompting just as Proxifier first starts transmitting data. I'm just imagining in terms of auto-deploying to 500-odd workstations, with a potential 10,000 users ("public access" lab workstations included) and trying to deploy it in as ready-to-run a state as possible. Using the keychain would also be nice/preferable (the current handling of the password makes me a little uncomfortable). But it's a great job, coming to the rescue where companies like Skype and Thomson Research (EndNote) have failed. I'm probably more likely to recommend it to advanced users at this point, who can nut out some of its workings, until a couple of administrative things are smoothed out. [alert admin]

RDC 0.4.4 (Mac OS X)
Would be nice to indicate that it requires X11 in the System Requirements field. It's also conveniently missing from the product homepage. I spent 15 minutes trying to work out why it was just sitting there doing nothing when I clicked Connect, then in desperation manually ran ./rdesktop, giving me a bunch of X11 errors. If it won't run without X11, I pass. I'll just continue running my two sessions by using two copies of Microsoft's RDC. [alert admin]

Microsoft Messenger 6.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Ever since version 5.1.1 of MSN Messenger, this thing has had a broken SOCKS5 proxy implementation. Microsoft have been completely useless and thus, so is their software. I have had endless "did you check your password is correct?" responses and other scripted, worthless assistance. I actually don't want assistance. This is a bug, and I want it fixed. This is not me, and it's not my network, and even though I send them the results of an hour's worth of testing and regression testing, pointing squarely at Messenger, I get "are your settings correct?", "you need to talk to your admin". I *am* the admin. I'm enjoying the "Used Product For" pop-up on this Feedback form. A very generous interpretation of the word "Use" applies here, considering it's broken. [alert admin]

Microsoft IntelliPoint & IntelliType 6.1 (Mac OS X)
One thing that's very strange about this installer is that it's time-stamped from June 15, 2006. Did they sit on it for 5 months, or are they playing funny stuff with their installer? (You can tell PackageMaker to set the time-stamps to a particular day/time.) [alert admin]

Apple Remote Desktop Admin 3.1 (Mac OS X)
Remember to install ARD 3.0 onto a machine *before* you upgrade the client to 3.1. Since ARD 3.1 is an updater and you need ARD 3.0 to be installed first, a machine which has already had the client updated to 3.1 will be difficult to set up as a new admin machine. But not impossible. Look inside the ARD 3.0 installer bundle, into Contents > Installers. Install RemoteDesktopAdmin.pkg and RemoteDesktopRMDB.pkg, but skip the RemoteDesktopClient.mpkg (that's the one that's causing the failure). Then install ARD 3.1 update. [alert admin]

Firefoxy 1.5.4 (Mac OS X)
I hope this gets updated to support Firefox 2.0. I've been spoiled by having my Firefox 1.x fancified, and the prospect of having to live with stock-standard Firefox bits in 2.0 fills me with a certain amount of dread. [alert admin]

Fetch 5.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I highly recommend taking a look at Fetch, particularly for people behind a firewall now that it supports authenticated SOCKS5 proxies. If you are with an educational institution or a charity, your list should pretty much begin and end with Fetch, due to their generous edu/charity license. But if you're not, there's still plenty of features to like, including great scripting options, and that comprehensive array of firewall/proxy options. If you've previously tried Fetch 4.x, you'll know it was a strange creature, straddling the Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X divide. With Fetch 5.x, it's a whole new ballgame, and it now looks and feels like a true Mac OS X application. [alert admin]

CandyBar 2.6.1 (Mac OS X)
CandyBar really needs to be updated to support newer versions of the OS, such as 10.4.7, 10.4.8. [alert admin]

BitTorrent 4.4.1 (Mac OS X)
Is it just me or has BitTorrent completely stopped working? I can't get it to go beyond "Launching - Initial Startup" for any torrent (tried lots from different sources). This used to work perfectly for me, now doesn't work at all, and it happened in the last 4 or 5 days. I think it's trying to connect to some bittorrent.com server, is unable to and is siezing up the app. And before anyone says it, I don't want to use Azureus - it's overblown, overcomplicated, and suffers from inheriting a largely Windowsian cross-platform interface. I like BitTorrent's clean, simple interface, and it doesn't try to be too smart, give you features that operate differently than you expect (eg: Azureus' timed rotation seeding that seems to do something completely else than the tooltip said, and that I've spent hours trying to figure out), or require a monitor 1440 pixels wide to fit in all the useless columns. AguaT 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Although I want the classic Aqua appearance back, instead of the weird hybrid UI that comes as default in 7, I like the new icon (blends in better in the Dock, doesn't stick out like a big neon glowing sore thumb), so I chose to keep the icon. Although it preserved the Finder icon(s), AguaT still replaced the icon in the About Box. Minor quibble, since I don't go into the About Box hardly ever, but it should really honor what the user selected as far as old vs new icons. [alert admin]

Acrobat 8.0 Re-installing issue
Do not clean Adobe products. If you remove language or (especially) architectures (stripping Universality out to leave either an Intel or PowerPC-specific binary) from them, Adobe's products won't work properly. Re-install and don't clean them.

Hang on, when did they announce the PrefPane = trojan thing? I'm normally pretty good with keeping on top of issues, but I must have missed that tech briefing. I'm a little worried now because there are 20-something trojans in my System Preferences. And there's one where the only thing it does is change my display settings and doesn't *seem* to do anything else. And one which all it has is a button to update…

DO, It's the USUAL GREAT update from Apple!!!
I have honestly never ever ever seen any issues with iTunes that were not created by the user, and I look after a couple of hundred Mac workstations. The only cases I've ever seen have been people shifting their iTunes library around, winding up with a new empty one, over time finding themselves with multiple libraries and eventually needing to consolidate them back together. I think those who are having issues need to diagnose whether it…

Some of what occurs in Entourage (as well as the other Office apps) is driven by various underlying libraries (the junk in the "Office" sub-folder), not just the main "Microsoft Entourage" application file. It's possible the update they are talking about applies to one of those.

Ditto. It's supposed to ask for authentication, but doesn't. Took a stab, enabled root, logged in as root, tried again; same thing. Whatever it is, it's busted. At least it's a "no damage caused" bug.

Google Desktop accessed the net for more than just the software improvement program. Unsurprisingly, it's integrated into Google.com. So, it's honoring you opting out of the non-personal feedback thing, but your Little Snitch is reacting to normal Google Desktop behavior (and, frankly, you're reacting to something that you should educate yourself about first). http://desktop.google.com/support/mac/bin/answer.py?answer=60019&topic=10855

OmniWeb sports a whole list of features, many of them unique, but rather than try and describe them and ask you if they are of interest, the best thing you can do is download it and run it in trial/unlicensed mode (BTW, it doesn't "expire"). If you find something you like, you can then decide if you want to buy a license (code) for it. If you don't find anything, no loss. It's a free download. People…

You might like to try Yahoo Messenger as well. After years of neglect, it seems to have leapfrogged Microsoft's client, even in beta. And Yahoo and MSN networks now co-operate, allowing you to send and receive to/from MSN within Yahoo's client.
