NiftyTelnet SSH 1.1r3 (Mac OS 9)
Small, fast, supports SSH. I don't need any of that other junk that all the resurrected versions of NCSA Telnet keep stacking on. I like that it's clean and simple -- menus are limited to what you need, configuration is simple, it uses Platinum-ized dialog boxes.... I couldn't be without it. [alert admin]

EditDV Unplugged 1.6.2 (Mac OS 9)
is *not* included. MC-EZ is a 40MB application and EditDV Unplugged is 10MB total. You do the math. Haven't yet tested the application, however the Read Me lists a rather complicated list of incompatibilities (QuickTime FireWire DV drivers) and it seems to come with an awful lot of custom drivers, as well as multiple (old) versions of Apple's FireWire drivers. you won't get their 3D sound anyway. You are a second-class citizen in Real's eyes and will need to get a Windoze pee-C to get this feature. To B r y c e: for some reason they insist on using a crappy java-based installer. See, they can't write a single piece of Mac-native code. If, like me, you support other Mac users, I suggest you take 10 minutes or so to re-package RealPlayer CORRECTLY via StuffIt InstallerMaker or MindVision InstallerVISE. This would also allow you to stop it from trashing your users's OS and prefs. (AND allow you to pre-load preferences, including a faked email address so your users's email addresses aren't sold to spammers). [alert admin]

Iomega QuikSync 2.0.2 (Mac OS 9)
software, but since it it limited to only Iomega drives, it should be free, not $19.95. For $19.95 I'd expect a "Pro" version which would sync to any type of disk, including network drives. Not worth paying for in its current state. [alert admin]

Screen Locker 1.0 (Mac OS X)
odd that on a secure opearating system, which requires username and password and enforces file permissions, that the screensaver (which is a welcome inclusion) didn't have a screen-lock. installed fine, even learned a trick with the Terminal application (option-command dropping a script onto it), worked great. now i don't have to log out of mac os x just to keep my computer secure. player in "Compact" view. You won't see all the other useless crap in the player window. SECURITY HINT: make sure you turn off all the automatic features - no channels, no flashes, no automatic updates, no auto file-type re-associations, no support info, no quality feedback, no cookies. Real has a history of abusing these things and should not be trusted. I wouldn't even give them your real email address (try webmaster@real.com instead) since there is no legitimate reason for them to have it. [alert admin]

ProTools Free 5.0.1 (Mac OS 9)
does anything more need to be said? STOP GRADING THE SOFTWARE BASED ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SERVER. it's just plain stupid to take out your frustrations with the server on the application. in many cases the server isn't even in the company's control. [alert admin]

Macromedia Authorware 5.2 (Mac OS 9)
course, just an update for the Packager tool, since THERE IS NO Macromedia Authorware for the Macintosh, because Macromedia just can't be bothered - you have to do all your work on Windoze. So, the Download Demo link won't do you any good at all, for 2 reasons: 1) there ain't a Mac full version, so why would there be a Mac demo? 2) Macromedia's 3 pages of forms to fill out EVERY TIME you download a demo; even if you have a Macromedia ID you have to confirm everything every time, and have to uncheck the "send me spam!" boxes which mysteriously become active (hint: fill it with garbage, maybe they'll eventually get the hint). It's rather odd that they tout AuthorWare for "learning applications" but ignore how many Macs are in education. It's like Adobe ceasing work on the Mac version of Photoshop to focus on the Windoze version and saying "don't worry, you can save a Photoshop picture as a GIF or a PICT or something." No, you're probably better off getting one of the free and cross-platform tools such as iShell. Rating: Poor. Poor form for not actually making a Mac version, and poor form for supplying misleading information to VersionTracker. [alert admin]

Apple ResEdit 2.1.3 (Mac OS 9)
is still valid, but apple has removed it from the apple software updates web pages. do a search for "resedit" at http://asu.info.apple.com and see if you can find it... this is a brilliant utility - if your unix or windoze friends say that the mac hides everything, that you can't "tinker" with your computer, show them this. show them that you can change much more of your computer than they can, including "hacking" any application, the Finder, and the System itself.
