MimMac 1.9.2 (Mac OS X)
After another interaction with Benjamin, I can tell you he really cares about his users. I bought a new computer and again ran into licensing trouble but Benjamin had me sorted out within 12 hours. MimMac also handles packages well (iPhoto, Aperture generate packages into the hundreds of Gigabytes), treating them as folders so you only have to update the files which have changed not the whole database (minutes instead of days of copying). MimMac is the only affordable high quality sync tool available on OS X. SuperDuper! is the way to go for volume backup but SuperDuper! doesn't handle folders or partial drives well and won't do two way syncing at all. MimMac and SuperDuper! are a killer combination though. I've since bought another license to support the developer's efforts with MimMac, despite our rocky start. What's even better is the licensing scheme will be changed so that your license will continue to work even if Ascendent Softworks disappears (hopefully not!). All that's left on my wishlist for MimMac is dry run preview of two-way syncing. [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 5.1.3 (Mac OS X)
More interested in unlicensed copies than licensed users ![]()

Every time you run Synchronize! Pro , it installs parasiteware in the background of your Mac which is very difficult to turn off. The parasiteware doesn't do much except steal processor cycles (going up and down between 0 and 6% in my experience). That's a pretty heavy performance price to pay. Synchronize! Pro X used to be a great product. Then the developer became more obsessed with all the unlicensed copies in use rather than the licensed copies that are in use. Hugh Sontag would do well to make his customers advocates, knock his price down a bit and sell to a much wider public. Instead he gives rude answers and cripples our computers. Look elsewhere. PS. I now own and use SuperDuper and find the atmosphere a lot friendlier and more user positive. No parasiteware. [alert admin]

File Buddy 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Too pricey (should be about $25) and now AWOL. What was the premiere file handling utility has committed Hari-Kari. What a pity. Mac users still need a simpler find function and a tool for manipulating file metadata. Running about four different utilities to do this instead. Thanks for the memories though. [alert admin]

Web Snapper 2.3.2 (Mac OS X)
Free alternative which actually works
Websnapper is okay when it works (it breaks quite often).
If you would like a better and simpler alternative for taking full length screenshots of webpages, Netfixer does the job. Oh and it's free... [alert admin]

ChatCop 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I paid for an application which wouldn't run on my computer. Tim Breslin blamed my computer for the problem but promised a refund. He never delivered on the refund. Keep it in mind when dealing with tastyapps. [alert admin]

MarsEdit 2.2.2 (Mac OS X)
Problem with Wordpress weblogs...
which the developer is not fixing. There are hidden illegal characters in MarsEdit posts which crash the Wordpress XML-RPC interpreter, making it impossible to post to my Wordpress weblogs for the last six months. For some reason, fixing this is not a priority with Daniel. So I am unable to use this software which I paid for for more than six months. Be careful. [alert admin]

Domainer 1.8 (Mac OS X)
Well, I have so many domains to manage and it sounded so good, I went ahead and bought it straight up. I wish I’d waited till I’d demo’ed the app first. The developer states you can import details from a txt file from your DomReg. This is true but VERY limited; you can’t map your nameservers to the fields supplied and there are no fields for: Private, locked, Reg/Admin contacts or most importantly, key info etc. Sure you can add these infos to the Comments field manually but when you have 50+ domains you need to set aside the whole afternoon (yawn). It’s almost seems like the developer either just didn’t think things through, was in a big hurry or has no idea about domain management. This app has huge potential but needs some follow through at the basic levels. I’d give it a 5.5/10. [alert admin]

The basic idea is good. Unfortunately the application doesn't update itself automatically. Far worse is that Rage Domainer freezes regularly. If it doesn’t take down the whole computer you are lucky. Awful experience. Nothing but trouble. Three users in a row. Comments from Rage: "It's high quality". No it's a badly broken RealBasic app. Someone please build us a decent Cocoa app. I think I'm going to go to running one of the Windows apps under a virtual OS. That's how bad this is. [alert admin]

Disinformation. SuperDuper if anything is easier to use and more reliable. Customer support is a lot more friendly. Licensing is a lot more friendly. Frankly, life is just a whole lot better in the world of Shirt Pocket Software than the Qdea dungeons.

Nothing is more lamentable than dunderhead friends of developers stopping by and telling versiontracker users not to comment on software and software practices but instead to confine themselves to private emails. We use versiontracker for a reason: * to help fellow users * to keep developers honest So obviously you don't like VersionTracker (people commenting publicly on software) so stay home next time.

Of course you have to let GlimmerBlocker through Little Snitch, the same way you allow your browsers access to the internet. A pity you can't delete your unfair review.

Hello Daniel, You know what we need: Really simple WYSIWYG. i.e. sort of WYSIWYG. You don't need to offer all the tags in your WYSIWYG, neither to add nor to display. Just don't delete our custom tags when you switch (an Ecto bugbear throughout version 1 & 2 - not sure about version 3) views between HTML and WYSIWYG. Bold, italic, lists, code, pre. That about covers what we need from the WYSIWYG. The fancy stuff we will…

I'm still waiting. The only thing which seems to worry Tim is VersionTracker feedback, not users. Tim, customer service starts before VersionTracker. At this point, we don't really care if your feelings are hurt, because you are annoying us and wasting our time with your dissembling.

Oh, for the record, I've contacted the developer five times and I still don't have my refund. Great to see you monitor the forums - it would be nice if you would take care of your customers instead.

is a common refrain. At this point you should be experienced enough not to be making that argument. It really doesn't solve the users' issues. Think hard about how you are coding Default Folder X. It's just too aggressive a model, interfering too deeply with the OS. Try and figure out a liter way to get the core functionality. When you added APE you were really off the path. It's a pity to lose Default Folder to memory leaks…

involved in running a small software company. It's not a joke. I used to be a Default Folder advocate/junkie in the Mac OS 7/8/9 days. Unfortunately in the OS X world, Default Folder has never been as reliable (not that we didn't have crashes from Default Folder then). I wish you would stop focusing on expanding Default Folder, but focus on making a lite version which is absolute stability. What I have against you/Default Folder are the hard system…
