Mac HelpMate 2.1 (Mac OS X)
Mac HelpMate is Free! Not $600 a Year.
Mac HelpMate is widely considered to be one of the finest Troubleshooting, Maintenance and Diagnostic tools for Mac OS X. It is distributed as freeware. Now there is a related *Service* that's an annual subscription, for which Mac HelpMate serves as the front-end. No one *has* to pay that annual $600 fee, but people *choose* to if the service is apropos to their consulting or support business. Many Mac support pros find it well worthwhile. If you're not in a position to pay the fee for or understand the value of a Mac HelpMate subscription, just use the software *as is* and pay nothing. I hope this clears the air a bit. [alert admin]

PsyncX 2.2.1 (Mac OS X)
What just toying around with the source code for PsyncX so I could get it to a Universal binary, but great to see the developer beat me to it, AND make it savvy for 10.2 through 10.4 as well! If I have only one little quibble, it's the extra authentication necessary when creating backup scripts, and it would be nice to be able to save the configuration to a .plist as well. Also, it's time you used Steppers instead of those popup buttons to set execution time. The popups are ugly. OK, so three little quibbles. Nice to see this isn't abandoneware! [alert admin]

X29-Renamer 1.0 (Mac OS X)
It's funny, but utilities always appear when I need them! Sort of spontaneously, like mushrooms after a rainfall. X29 is one such tool. A few days after a customer complained about how files with long names get truncated for OS 9 (they still have a legacy OS 9 server for some accounting software) this utility appears, and now they are MUCH happier. Great stuff. [alert admin]

Leopard screen sharing via iChat will be for friends and family. Mac HelpMate is for support professionals, and it offers unattended access, support for earlier Mac OS X releases (Leopard to Leopard for iChat only). Not only that, I doubt all Macs running 10.5 will be able to use that feature - just as all Macs that can run Tiger can't use iChatAV. To make a long story short, not the same solution. Savvy consultants will…

The subscription gives you access to the Mac HelpMate server, which is necessary to be able to act as a go-between to allow the zero-configuration screen sharing. Netopia eCare is $3200 a year for basically the same service, and Timbuktu locator carries a fee, as does Timbuktu over Skype (which is notoriously slow). Timbuktu requires a charge of $80 per MAC whereas Mac HelpMate is licensed for one-to-many use, which is why it's a perfect…

That's the application checking the integrity of the personalization information as well as for updates. Curl is the method used. Pretty standard stuff.
