iRooster 2.5.1 (Mac OS X)

the Rooster is Mute

This delightful little program started displaying an annoying quirk a few months ago (I think when I upgraded to Leopard) that makes it all but useless: all too often, an alarm will fire and the rooster will THINK he's singing (i.e., the snooze alarm comes up, showing the song that's currently playing) except that no actual sound comes out of the Mac (even though the Mac's system volume is up). I suspect this is some bug in the way iRooster passes commands to the OS -- when it is in the state, i've had the experience of putting the Mac (a macbook pro in my case) to sleep with the alarm supposedly running and waking it back up -- and immediately the song plays at full volume. Quite a few people have posted the same problem on the Chimp user forum, but no one has posted a solution. I emailed the developer and got no response. So for now at least, the Rooster is retired to his coop and I will have to rely on other solutions for a reliable alarm. [alert admin]

Air Traffic Control 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

so far so good

I've been using MacStumbler for this purpose (which I like). Memory usage for this widget is slightly less than for Macstumbler, so I can't really complain. Macstumbler gives slightly more info (e.g., a log). But the widget is maybe a bit easier to get to. So, OK, fine by me. [alert admin]

Free Ruler 1.6 (Mac OS X)

Only loads from disk image...

neat little tool, except that I can only get it to run from the disk image itself. When I drag the app over to my Applications folder and try to run it from there, I get this: "Application Launch Error. The application "Adobe Reader" could not be launched because of a shared library error: ")<Adobe Reader><Adobe Reader><HXRuntime><>" (this is after throwing away the Pref file, restarting, etc.) ?? DT Pro 1.5 includes Spotlight integration

spotlight integration is a step forward, but it's still frustrating and incomplete because spotlight reports just the internal database identifier for the article. So you can't tell from the results anything useful about the hits. It is true that you can Quicklook over the hits and see the original pdf titles that way -- but that's terribly slow if you have, say 30 DT records and a bunch of other file types to sift…

isync menu command is broken

I agree there's a problem with the isync menu bar, at least on my computer (10.4.2, isync 2.1). I want to sync my address book on my powerbook with my phone (siemens s56) which i used to be able to do from the menu bar. Now, however, if I do "sync now" from the menu bar, the little wheel turns briefly and stops. When I then open the iSync application itself, I…
