Yep 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Yep 2.0 lacks some features of Yep 1.8 ![]()

I've used Yep 1.8 and its predecessors for quite a while. However, I'm not yet using Yep 2.0. While Yep 2.0 is an upgrade in many respects, its GUI lacks a way to set the a date for "original document created." It's rather mystifying that this function, which had a prominent location in the user interface of Yep 1.x, is gone from Yep 2.0. Instead of treating the document creation date as a piece of editable metadata, Yep 2.0 has decided to use the Mac OS file creation date. This makes Yep 2.0 much less useful than its previous versions to manage documents that have associated dates (and there are many such documents, for example: collections of academic papers, legal documents, bills, bank statements, correspondence…). Although I would recommend Yep 1.8, I would not recommend Yep 2.0 for this reason. The new interface looks gorgeous and polished—but the fundamental function is simply not yet all there. Apple Server Admin Tools 10.5.7 (Mac OS X)
what changed between 10.5.6 and 10.5.7
Server Admin Tools 10.5.7 is available in Software Update, but its description there links to a Apple kb article from last month that describes 10.5.6 instead. [alert admin]

OmniFocus 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Great Balance between Flexibility & Simplicity ![]()

The most important thing a task management application must do, is stay out of the way. You have to be able to trust it without devoting inordinate time to tweaking it.
I have been using OmniFocus for most of its extended Beta period, and despite its beta status, it has been impressively stable, especially with regard to data integrity. OmniFocus (OF for short) seems usable alone, but it really shines as part of the GTD approach. The documentation in the released 1.0 version of OF is parsimonious but adequate; it's not an introduction to GTD (that's the role of David Allen's book) but it does explain how to use OF.
The designers of OF struck a near-ideal balance between flexibility and simplicity. For example, text formatting of tasks, projects, and task groups is limited, to reduce distractions. Frequently-used settings to control the visibility of items can be saved and quickly accessed using "perspectives." Integration with other apps is natural and helpful. And finally, its organizing capabilities are what you'd expect from the developers of OmniOutliner.
Over the past 20 years I've used several different approaches to task management, and GTD together with OF is the best I've found so far. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.3.71 (Mac OS X)
I've been using VueScan since I first learned of it, and support has been consistently outstanding. Most recently, I reported on Thursday afternoon that VueScan didn't work properly with my new, very cheap HP OfficeJet 4315, and by Sunday, Ed Hamrick had not just fixed it---it's astoundingly faster than HP's driver! At low DPI, VueScan scans so fast that at first I thought it was still not working, and just ejecting the paper! [alert admin]

ohphoneX 0.3 (Mac OS X)
0.3 crashing; sticking with 0.2 until fixed
I've used ohphoneX for video conferencing since its inception. Although 0.3 seems to fix the audio receive problem I've experienced when connecting to a Polycom, this version crashes repeatedly for me, about 100 seconds after connecting. 0.2 did not have this problem so I will stick with that for now for video, and make a separate phone call for audio.
