EyeTV 2.3.1 (Mac OS X)
Great program - works wonders on a G4 Mac Mini ![]()

I use this software along with the Elgato 410 TV tuner for freeview TV in the UK. It works great. I cannot comment on others' stability issues but I've left this program running for many many weeks with no problems at all. It stays running (scheduling and recording) under my account even when other members of my family use the Mini under their own accounts. The only reason I ever have to quit it is when an Apple security update requires a reboot. Picture quality is top notch and performance on my lowly G4 is excellent. Watching and/or recording doesn't seem to be affected by running other applications (even the now bloated iTunes 7!). I use the automatic export to iPod function. As of this version it does not support the latest 640x480 resolution iPods now can handle. If you choose to do the export manually, you can encode it to 640x480 or any other resolution and format you desire. I've asked Elgato to add a feature where the user can set ALL the values for the automatic export since there was a time I wanted to export everything at full resolution (1024x576) H264 to save on disk space. Exporting to H264 is processor intensive but it doesn't bring the system to a halt - it is still totally usable. As of version 2.3.1 the export speed seems to be significantly better than previous versions. The TVTV integration works perfectly and I have never missed a show I wanted since I began using it. It's well worth the subscription cost. The one thing you do have to watch is TVTV will not explicitly warn you about schedule conflicts - you have to check the job list for red blocks of time (indicating overlapping programmes). Similarly, if you don't resolve those overlaps, TVTV will upload the schedule to the EyeTV - which will subsequently disable one of the scheduled overlapping programmes without warning you. Not too much of an issue in my opinion - just keep your eye on your scheduling. I cannot comment on the Front Row integration as the G4 mini never came with Front Row. I've used other TV solutions on Windows and Linux and as far as I am concerned none of them come close to this ease of setup, ease of use, stability and features combination. Some may have more features but are a real pain to get and keep working. The EyeTV looks and feels very mac like - it just works TM which is exactly what I want to ensure I don't miss my favourite shows. [alert admin]

This is a great little app. I am using it to convert MPEG2 TV recordings to iPod format. Since it now supports 640x480 H264 encoding it does everything I need... for free. I just now need to figure out how to Automate or AppleScript it to convert my recordings every night. [alert admin]

RAID Alert 1.1.0 (Mac OS X)
So using a GMail account for email alerts won't work! Sadly, without that, it's no use to me. [alert admin]

httpmail plugin 1.42 (Mac OS X)
I upgrading using the script (from 1.4.1 to this version) and I can no longer connect to my hotmail account for either sending or receiving. I followed the instructions here and still cannot connect. I cannot delete the account and re-create it as I will loose ALL my messages in the account (since I download from hotmail then delete)! I am not going to rate it as this is a really great plug-in but this version doesn't seem up to the usual standard. Now, where can I get 1.4.1...? [alert admin]

EyeTV 1.7 (Mac OS X)
I've been using this for about a week with an EyeTV410 and I have to say I am really impressed - even at 200 quid! I had a MyHD card on a PC and it wasn't as stable and lacked a few of the features. Some things I'd like to see in a future release: 1. Ability to overwrite a previous recording with the latest one. That way you only keep one copy of say the latest news or quiz show you happen to like watching. 2. Ability to edit any (i.e. NON EyeTV) MPEG2's. This would make it a killer app as there's really no good software for MPEG2 editing without spending further hundreds. 3. Fix the occasional error that EyeTV gets from tvtv (wrong parameters error). It's very occasional and hasn't affected my scheduling but even so I'd like to see it gone. That's about it for now. I'm sure I'll find more stuff but I've only been using it for a few days! MPEG Streamclip 1.1 (Mac OS X)
I was trying to convert some MPEG-2 recorded off a satelite (Dave Chapelle to be exact) to something so I could edit out the adverts in iMovie. I started with this program and liked the results but decided to try out a few of the others. Man was that a mistake. I should have stuck with this. Basically, it does what it says on the tin. I did have to split the input file (3GB!) in windows (YUK) first. I also had some crashes whenever I'd try to de-interlace the output but I soon figured that out. Anyway, don't go anywhere else (at the moment), this seems to be the best of the bunch. Since it's free, it gets 5 stars from me (even with the crashes). [alert admin]

MissingMpegEdit 0.3 (Mac OS X)
From what I can tell, this is simply a wrapper for Quicktime that uses AppleScript (with a lot of errors) to simply pass the info to QT. There's nothing this does that QT doesn't do itself!!!! [alert admin]
