Kandalu X 5.04 (Mac OS X)

Lousy Experience

First off, I hate it when I can only download a trial by supplying my email address. I've traced too much SPAM back to unscrupulous shareware sites. But after surrendering my email address I finally got a link to download the program only to get the message that the program had expired. Does the developer make it easy to contact support for help? No. So this program goes into the trash and I guess I'll keep using Senuti. Not fancy and has some issues, but it is free and it works. [alert admin]

You Control 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

(screw) you software

Tiger has been officially out for a week and obviously lots of software needs updating. For a 25 year veteran that's nothing new to me. In the software world there appear to be three kinds of companies: 1) those that let their customers know if there are issues with the new OS along with an assurance that updates are forthcoming. 2) those that say nothing and even ignore user contact, as if this information is a state secret. 3) those that don't update their current software for the new OS and force users to buy an upgrade. You Software certainly doesn't belong to category 1. For a while I was thinking I should place them in category 2. But on reflection, given their March madness sale, I'm beginning to think they might have sucked in lots of new owners with the intent of being a category 3 company. Under Tiger there are lots of little glitches with YouControl, YouControl Desktop is essentially useless. And the company remains silent. Wanna bet sometime this week or maybe as late as early June we hear about YouControl v2 with a $20 upgrade fee for current users? And no fixes for the glitches in v1, of course. [alert admin]

Saft 8.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Great Program...Lousy Customer Support

I paid for this program 1/2 year ago and while I find it useful, I've found the developer unhelpful at best and rude at worst. He also has a lousy way of handling upgrades for users. And now he wants me to pay $6 to get Tiger compatibility? Hey, I'm ticked at Now Software for pulling the same stunt and their programs have been the core of my workflow since the mid 90's If I can do without Now I can do without Saft. [alert admin]

blinkx 0.5 (Mac OS X)

Can't install

An unknown product from a new Mac vendor so I'm cutting them lots of slack. The installer fails to install the product...an error message tells me I cannot install the program no matter where I point to. I'm using an admin account on which I've installed two other programs today. Something screwy with how they've got the installer configured. As I informed them through a feedback email, I'm not gonna try installing it as root. [alert admin]

Saft 7.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Needs Help with Customer Support

Due to the way this program is tied to both the OS and Safari, each OS and Security update requires a new version of Saft. The developer apparently used to send email to customers alerting them to a new update and where it was found. He no longer does this and at the very least has neglected to tell many of us of this fact. To download the update we need the order number of the purchase. I've never before had to keep an order number. Thankfully Esellerate makes it easy to get that information. Finally, the update process isn't automated and the AppleScript he provides doesn't seem to work. If you expect to buy a product that is conveniently downloaded and installed stay away from Saft. Click'NDesign3D 3.4.7 (Mac OS X)

I called

I spent 10 minutes of my cellphone long distance talking to a very nice 'tech support' woman. As soon as I identified myself as an owner of the Mac version of the program she took my information and promised delivery of a new CD within 7-10 days at no cost other than the phone call. Since I got the CD in a package deal from Stomper I had no serial number and wasn't asked to provide any proof of ownership which seemed interesting. Her guess is Stomper is sending an updater but if that's the case it would be cheaper to put it online, right? She didn't have a clue why we had to call for the update and admitted she'd taken a large number of calls in the last several days as the information about the update has become known. She also had no idea if the company is getting developer information from Apple so Tiger won't break this new version and/or take nearly a year to release a new Tiger compatible update. And finally, she passed off my unhappiness over the long wait by pointing out the company had released a work-around to let us use the old version. ie we could run it in Classic. I told her I considered that work-around pretty weak but even worse, in all the times I'd contacted technical support this was the first I'd heard of the work around. So, in a week or two I'll have ClickNDesign running again but no idea how long I'll be able to continue using it and the distince feeling the company doesn't consider Mac owners at all important to their business. As I told her, we now have several viable alternatives and my money will go to those who prove they want my business. So far Stomper hasn't done that. [alert admin]

MacSOUP 2.6b2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Nothing better yet

This program could use a setup manager - it isn't the easiest newsreader to get started with. But once configured, nothing organizes the unwieldy usenet news world like MacSOUP. I don't know what all these one star reviewers are thinking! [alert admin]

You Control 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

$50 for beta quality?

Testing the first release I could reliably crash the program four different ways. The RSS engine was particularly crash prone. This second release is somewhat less buggy but I crashed it twice in the first (and last) 10 minutes I used it. Even assuming the program was rock solid the price is outrageous for a collection of utilities that used to be free. This is a shameful rip-off and I'll not be spending my hard earned cash on them anytime soon. [alert admin]

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro 3.0B3 (Mac OS X)

Upgrade fee outrageious!

I thought $30 was expensive for the first version of this program but I paid it - grudgingly. But now the company is upgrading the program and only giving me a $5 discount? I'm not paying it. Simple as that. We were able to force Speed Download's upgrade price down, we can do it again. [alert admin]
