Scrooge 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Good but needs a bit of polishing

It doesn't try to do a lot, but does what it does do well. Better than I expected actually! I was most impressed that it could handle non-US stocks, eg, NAB.AX showed National Australia Bank on the Australian stock exchange. (However, it did only show limited information for Australian stocks.) Some aspects could do with a bit of polishing: * The value figures show up with a UK pound symbol, even the US ones. In the International System Preference, I have set currency to use $. I do, however, have British English as my default language so maybe that is somehow related. * Changing the window size is pretty clumsy. Making it larger, enlarges all the fields. Making it smaller shrinks all the fields. Superficially this seems ok until you want to make the window smaller temporarily to see something else on the screen. Then all your fields shrink to miniscule size and you cannot read them. I would prefer the fields not to change size when the window size was changed. Instead, it would be good if the fields stayed the same size as I set them to, and a horizontal scroll bar appeared when the window was narrower than all the fields. (This would have the benefit that the window could be shrunk to just the symbol and price for everyday use, but could be opened up to see the full data.) * It would be handy to have a field for quantity in the dialogue when you are adding a new stock. Sound Studio 2.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Works on Tiger

On Panther, it does not run and leaves this in the console log: dyld: /Volumes/MacOS9G5/Downloads/Sound Studio 2.2.app/Contents/MacOS/Sound Studio 2.2 can't open library: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreAudioKit.framework/Versions/A/CoreAudioKit (No such file or directory, errno = 2) However, on Tiger it works correctly. ExifRenamer 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Does Exifrenamer use creation or capture date?

Apparently, some applications (eg, QuickTime) overwrite the creation date EXIF field. If Exifrenamer is using this field to set the date, then it will be the date the file was created rather than the date the picture was taken. There is an EXIF field called Capture Date which QuickTime (at least) does not overwrite, and Exifrenamer could use this. David [alert admin]

Taggerwocky X 1.2 (Mac OS X)

iTunes dows not edit ID tags

Just checked. iTunes stores the tag information somewhere within itself, not in the MP3 file. So anything you change in iTunes will be lost if you move the MP3 files to somewhere else. [alert admin]

mAC3dec 1.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Problem with filenames in Mac OS X

It mucks up long file names on OS X. For example, I am converting AIFFs to MP3. A file named Five Squeezy Pieces 99-20030902.aiff comes into mAC3dec as Five Squeezy Pieces #3C80F.aiff and the song title tag therefore becomes Five Squeezy Pieces #3C80F.aiff and the MP3 becomes Five Squeezy Pieces #3C80F.mp3 David [alert admin]

Taggerwocky X 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Only editing tags is perfect

While iTunes is a wonderful program, I have been in the computer industry long enough to realise two things: 1. It is always better to put good data into a database than to rely on the program to fix it up for you. Often, they do not quite do what you want. So I would prefer to set the tags in my MP3s before I stuff them into iTunes. 2. All-in-one programs are great until you decide you want to use something else, then you have the problem of how do you get your valuable data/files out in a form that you can use. So I think a program that allows me to edit tags is very useful. The only thing I wish it would do is to allow me to drag a file onto it rather than having to use the menu. David [alert admin]

Simple, straightforward, useful!

I have wondered for ages how to capture streaming audio so I could listen to it at times that suit me. WireTap is the way! Two comments: 1. Users need to beware that WireTap captures all sound output, including beeps, new mail sounds, etc. as well as what you want to record. 2. I wish the AppleScript support would allow you to specify a file name to record into, or at least allow you to retrieve the name of the file it is writing to so you can rename it to something sensible. A great program! David [alert admin]

iDo Script Scheduler 1.5 (Mac OS X)

I tried YoupiKey…

based on this recommendation. While the concept is good, Youpi has many bugs, one of which is that it refuses to execute many AppleScripts. It also continues to try to execute them even after you have deleted them from the list. iDo may not be so powerful, but it works reliably. [alert admin]

Sorry, areh. Hate…

the interface. Give me multiple windows so I can track multiple things at once. Hate this Cocoa "browser" model of reusing one window. No rating yet - haven't tried it long enough. [alert admin]

I had almost…

given up hope of a Mac OS X driver, but here it is. Interestingly, the new drivers seemed to still work without the updated firmware, although I did not do anything too fancy. Only four stars because of the poor documentation - no indication of what has changed from the previous version, and the instructions, while technically correct, do not really describe what you do, eg, say to click on the tab when it is a button.
