Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.0 (Mac OS X)
DO NOT INSTALL, if you need to open these programs
The apps will no longer launch after updating. You will just be caught in auto-updater purgatory anytime you try to launch an app. I foolishly tried to update in the middle of my work day. And now I am screwed. Thanks, MS. Awesome. [alert admin]

Montage 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)
I would love to replace my Final Draft with this, but this is a $50 program charging $140 for itself. Of course, Final Draft is a $50 program charging $225 for itself -- but Final Draft & Movie Magic Screenwriter came into existence when software was a rare and treasured thing. Now, in the freeware/shareware era, that business model is archaic. However, they cornered the market and no one has forced them adjust their price. They are professional programs. But come on... in today's world, they're both just specialized word processors with old code. Finally, along comes a lean mean Mac-only Montage and it got me excited. At $50 it would be a nice kick in the pants to the big two. It could sell to pros with its bonus features and hobbyists alike with it's friendly pricing. Instead, they over-priced it, edging out the dabblers and making the pros stick with the industry standard -- after all, it's still an investment to make. I've been waiting for them to get more realistic about pricing... but they won't budge. So Montage remains just a cheaper version of the other two that isn't proven or cross-platform... but has some bonus features. Sad, really. [alert admin]

VMware Fusion 1.1.57919 (Mac OS X)
I have been using BootCamp for a solid year without a single problem. I installed VMWare Fusion today, and my BootCamp partition is now completely useless. Windows dies immediately on startup and says that it can no longer be used with my hardware. This happens in VMWare Fusion, and it happens in a direct BootCamp startup. In desperation, after a few hours I even tried to rescue it all with Parallels. Same problem. Nothing works anymore and the Help offers no troubleshooting tips of any use. So now, I have to reinstall Windows, redownload everything, redo all of my settings, reimport my files and bookmarks. Yes, time to rebuild everything I had done to Windows over an entire year's time. So, thanks VMWare for time and money I will waste trying to get back what I already had. [alert admin]

Coda 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I was a TextWrangler, CyberDuck, Safari guy opting to hand code everything rather than be bullied by clunky, inconsistent WYSIWYG editors... until now. All I can say is FINALLY! OS X has been lacking something this elegant, and comprehensive since its inception. Everytime I think a good candidate is on the way (Contribute, NVU, Sandvox), they prove under-developed, buggy, or template-based toothlessness. This gets it right on most every count. I bought it already. Bravo! And thank you! [alert admin]

iShowU 1.34 beta 1 (Mac OS X)
Back in the day, when I went looking for an app like this, the speed was terrible, framerates not good, and usabiity awkward... so I was hoping that these days there was finally something out there (Universal Binary) that worked as quickly, easily, and well as this -- but expected it to cost a fortune. This was so exactly perfect I couldn't be more pleased. Why isn't this one blue? [alert admin]

Montage 1.2 (Mac OS X)
... but i still can't commit. if the updates continue making the strides they have, i just might. although final draft lacks all of these other whiz-bang things that i appreciate from montage, final draft is easy to write in. until i can import all of my final draft scripts flawlessly -- so i don't spend hours touching up formatting on a single script -- i'm not ready. and i really like the idea of a color coded script, but those colors are terrible! it's like a child's video game. and when i try and set my own colors all of the formatting starts breaking apart. and of course, there is the price. when you're the new kid, you have to compete. $99 makes more sense to me. wow. it's like eudora in the late '90s. ![]()

eudora-esque not as in the ugliest gui ever to be the face of a mainstream application, though... no, thunderbird looks just fine. the problems are definitely under the hood. just like eudora in the late 1990s, thunderbird seems to have no interest whatsoever in making this act or play nice with a mac. offering updates, but not offering any real change -- for mac users. ironically, this sad mail application is ready and willing to import and use the mail boxes, addresses, and preferences from that third party joke i made reference to named eudora... but doesn't give a d*mn about address book -- an integral part of a mac user's experience, or safari -- the absolute default for the mac os. imap support still doesn't seem to function and i find myself staring as a fairly attractive interface withou my settings, my mail or my address book. i can't help but wish it actually did something. do quicktime components like this conflict with one another? what if i have divx installed for example? and if you have two (or more!) components that translate the same codecs, how do you know which one quicktime will actually use? [alert admin]

i arrived at $50 through a simple process. If it's a simple program for play, i peak at $15. if it is a useful utility i peak at $25. if it is a specialized program for professional use, i peak at $50. of course there still exists the old guard of major work-related investments like microsoft office, adobe cs, etc. but even they have new world replacements on their heels that adhere to a more…

Number one reason: buzz. I'd never heard of skEdit... and now I'm in love with Coda, purchased it, and have no desire to try something that may made me think I made a mistake! But (and I say this without having tried skEdit), if you try Coda... it just feels right. It's elegant and easy, yet powerful. But mostly, you have to hand it to Panic... they came out with a roar, and give a…

Software the world doesn't need
As you can see from many of the reviews and responses here, there clearly is a market for it. I know I greatly appreciate not switching between tools and accomplishing the same tasks in one window. Enough to pay for this solution even though it's replacing my own blend of free apps. On top of that, I've long been a fighter against bloatware, but this code is lean and nimble. Despite the plethora of tools…

Also, if you're looking to do serious projection for parties than get g-force. apple is built on the basic engine behind g-force -- but like everything free, you have to pay to go pro. that doesn't diminish the value of itunes one bit.
