I'm not much of an accountant and was looking for something really simple to keep track of the accounts for my family trust. I have used MYOB in the past but didn't feel like spending real money on something and, based on some of the reviews above I gave TinyBooks a go. Well it sure is simple. I had a few questions for Ken, the developer and he replied within minutes!
I'm sure he won't mind me quoting him this piece of a response - it certainly summs up the whole experience.
It's so simple it's almost embarrassing. It simply tallies the totals of various accounts, all of which are either Deductible or Non-Deductible Expenses and Taxable or Non-Taxable Income. Profit is calculated by subtracting the total of Deductible Expenses from the Total of Taxable Income. If THAT is understood, you have the basis that you'll need to understand all of TinyBooks. This also implies that NON-deductible expenses and NON-taxable income, though tallied for your benefit, are NOT involved in any profit calculations at all. This gives you a great flexibility in the handling of your books. The real work is up to you...to properly determine your account list.
I tried out a couple of the other accounting apps listed here in VT with good star ratings but none of them came close to the simplicity of this one. Well worth the tiny shareware fee.
On the downside it lacks an asset registry, check printing, bill payment, payroll etc - but that's not really what it is for. It's a simple app for simple book keeping. I am happy I'l be able to print out a report and hand that over to my accountant come tax time and all will be sweet.
Cheers Dave

iDupe 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)
removed files from playlist but not hard disk
I used this app once to find some dupes and then - being a careful soul, decided to remove from the playlist without removing from the filesystem. alas it worked perfectly but now i have no idea which files on my filesystem are now gone from my playlist - so i have less music to listen to, but just as full a hard disk. could the author please add a 'scan entire lib for orphans' option? iJames Away Message 0.1b (Mac OS X)
cute but annoying that it hides the ichat windows
i am often 'away' but not really away, just too busy to be bothered chatting - but i like to see who else is online so that i can chat to them if needs be. why does this app hide the ichat windows... that's daft. [alert admin]

Hijack iTunes 1.0 (Mac OS X)
as someone who has already used AH in the past to do exactly, that - reripped a track so it would play on the old diamond rio i have attached to my bike - this makes lots of sense. for those who say this is just like buring to cd then ripping - well i guess, but if done properly (i have not tried this script so can't tell) it preserves the track names, cover art etc, and so forth and saves you a blank disk. Back in the Day 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Like over 40% of mac users, I am not in the US and regard the US date format as retarded. Please respect my OS's date preferences and allow me to enter dates as dd/mm, not stupid mm/dd otherwise it's neat. would make a good screen saver :-) [alert admin]

The latest Quicktime still fails to export the audio tracks from an mpeg movie created by a sony camera. damn that's annoying. hard to see what else this update does do. no noticible problems, improvem, ents or changes apart from purely cosmetic - flat panther style buttons and a new hot-picks movie. Apple iCal 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
The latest version of iCal is just fantastic. The handling of multiple timezones is sublime, although not perfect, it's head and shoulders above what it was. The little map is too small to accurately select a timezone and if you try to change cities that are in the same timezone it often will not let you, but just the ability to set timezones at all is a huge plus. also i must say the install went smoothly. i am on a pretty crappy link here and yet managed to get all of our household macs (3 of them) updated and synched in no time. all in al this is great. i expect a minor patch release soon enough will fix some of the cosmetic problems i am complaining about. i second your feature suggestions. also would love an option to copy the tags/decription back to iPhoto, and to remove a pic from a selection of pics.

I am totally with you on the slowness of iPhoto at naming and captioning photos. My god how can it be so slow! see my blog entry on this very topic. Shame on Apple for spoiling one of the best bits of software they make.

Author releases updates with hopes of making money...
Aquisition is a very well written app and a shining example of how good a java app can look and run on the mac. I have not ever tried to contact the author so can't comment on reports of his rudeness, and agree it's silly to expect people to pay for software that is mostly used to steal software. But please rate it properly - don't just use the ratings to vent your…

so you'd not accept visitors from countries where a few people have died of sars. you'd better not start tracking tuberculosis then - which killed 3 million people last year, or AIDs which is set to kill 25 million by the end of the decade.
