Proteus 4.10 (Mac OS X)

Lots of Bugs

OK, I've only used Proteus for a couple of days, but I've already found enough annoying bugs to start complaining about. For a program that's up to version 4, and that costs $15 (compared to other **free** multi protocol chat clients) this thing has too many bugs. Some highlights: the status message doesn't 'stick'. I have it set to show my icon in my contact list, and use the (*very* cool, BTW) feature to show the currently playing iTunes song as the status message. But it has this weird habit of disappearing. I don't know if it disappears for people on the other end, too. And the prefs don't seem to take effect right away, sometimes. One time I had the "connecting" sound enabled (biiiig mistake!) and one of the services was taking a long time to connect. the sound kept playing and playing and playing, so I went into prefs to turn it off, but it didn't work. Had to quit the program and start again. Also, now for some strange reason, pressing cmd-H doesn't hide Proteus (yes, there are other programs visible to switch to), and clicking on a contact in my contact list doesn't select them, so I can't get info about them. Actually, now I can't do anything with the contact window, close it, change status, anything. Looks like I have to restart the program. That fixed it, but the the problem is that kind of thing happens waaaay too often. This program has some really cool features that Adium doesn't have, like invisible mode, and the itunes thing, but overall it's B.U.G.G.Y., too buggy for a prog that's supposedly hit version 4 (not to mention the $). Moneydance 2004r3 (Mac OS X)

Not quite there yet

I'm looking for a replacement for Quicken. Moneydance is close to being it, but unfortunately only because Quicken is so bad. I have only used Moneydance for a few minutes, but already the problems in the GUI are showing up. In the ledger views, for instance, feature so simple as selecting multiple rows is absent, so if I want to delete a bunch of rows at once I have to do them one at a time. So I have to click on a row and then click delete, and then click on another row, and back down to the bottom to click delete. I can't just click delete a bunch of times because the selection highlight goes away after each deletion, instead of highlighting the next row, like it should. This whole deleting business was only a problem because when importing my Quicken QIF file Moneydance messed it up and inserted a bunch of duplicate transactions. After all that hassle I decided it wasn't worth it to switch. So I'll keep looking for that elusive magical Quicken replacement. [alert admin]

Solarian II 1.1 (Mac OS X)

doesn't respond to keystrokes

I remember this game fondly from my IIsi days. It drove me mad then and it drives me mad now. But this time, it's because the keys are unresponsive. I keep on getting killed by those bloody pentagons because my shields don't come on in time when I press the spacebar. And it's not because I'm too slow, even if I press the spacebar as soon as I see the pentagon start dropping down, the shields still don't go on. In fact, they *never* activate. There is definitely something wrong with the key response in this game. (TiBook 1Mhz, 10.3.6) [alert admin]

Virtual ][ 2.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Very cool, but needs joystick alternatives

Using the mouse for the joystick doesn't work for me, I'd prefer to use the arrow keys to simulate the mouse movement. (This is the only area where OSXII beats Virtual ][). Otherwise very nice, runs well (better than OSXII) and I like the little touches, like the drive door closing when you put a disk in! [alert admin]

Poisoned 0.515 (Mac OS X)

jekyll and hyde

Actually, any client will be bad at downloading the files, since there's a lot of demand, and not as much supply. There's no way around that, until more people share their files, not necessarily the fault of the client. As far as I can tell this client is definitely the best written i've seen in terms of responsiveness. One clue was the speed of the prefs (in addition to fast results and generally responsive gui). Very fast and fluid. *BUT* the second time I ran it, it locked up the machine and the GUI something fierce. I haven't had to do a total reboot like that in quite a while. So it's not w/o risk. Liquid Ledger 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)

For $45 I can get the new upgrade to Quicken 2004

Yeah, but Quicken sucks, that's the whole point. [alert admin]

icWord 3.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

shows promise

but has a couple of major usability problems. 1) when in slide show mode you've gotta have more control: need a forward *and* a back button (how bout the arrow keys?!) and also a way to exit. I started a 200 slide presentation only to find that I had to click the mouse 200 times to get out of it!!!! Ugh. 2) the other slide show I tried showed some of the slides upside down, and some mirrored! (it was a set of photos, spoofs of the motivational posters series). But otherwise this would be just what I need: a way to view power point presentations w/o Office. [alert admin]

OIDS.X 10.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Awesome!

This is a great game. I only give it 4 stars because it crashes a little too often, and the key sensitivity is a little off. But otherwise I'll let my actions speak for me: I would have written this review 2 weeks ago, but I just couldn't stop playing the game! [alert admin]

Acquisition 0.94 (Mac OS X)

only one beef

this has just been getting better and better, works fine for me and the interface is the best i've seen, but I have one problem. It made an "Acquisition" folder in my iTunes, but it never puts d-l'ed files there! so it just sits there, empyt, and I have to search for my newly dl-ed stuff in the 'brar (which always shows up there, btw, so I know that's not the problem) [alert admin]

Oz version

Sure, all that's required is for someone to identify the corresponding Austrialian websites, examine their source code, and substitute their form/url information into the urls.xml and searches.xml files in the widget's contents. It's described in a little bit of detail in the help file. Yeah, it's not super easy, and it probably requires some prior html knowledge, but it can be done without knowing how the software itself works.. Unfortunately, it's not going to be…

Holy Schneikes!

hey, thanks for the comments/stars! glad you like it. re: the "refining searches" suggestion, that's not a bad idea, but I think i'm gonna hold off on implementing that feature because, as you say, it would be rather involved, and really the way I envisioned the widget was as a starting off point, with further search revisions done on the website. But thanks again!

Looks good BUT

So of course the reason there aren't any European sites in there is because I don't use those sites, BUT, this is exactly why I made it customizable: so that anyone could change/add/remove sites from the list. It's relatively straightforward, if you know how to construct the search string for the website you're interested in you can edit the 'urls.xml' and 'search.xml' files in the widget package. It's described in more detail in the documentation,…
