VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)
VT Pro is dead. Adios. Hello MacUpdate. ![]()

1. After using VT Pro for 4+ years, I read that it will be replaced by a piece of junk called TechTracker. Oh, goody. 2. After trying out the new MacUpdate Desktop 5.0 this afternoon and: a. having it find a lot more out-of-date software than VT Pro b. discovering that it costs $20/year for up to 5 Macs I think it is time to say farewell (and not fondly) to VersionTracker and VT Pro. It is sad to see what CBS has done to this once great and very useful product. [alert admin]

CNET TechTracker app 1.0 beta 2 (Mac OS X)
I put this in the Feedback form. 1. Is this supposed to replace VersionTracker Pro? 2. It does not tell me where the software is on my Mac as VersionTracker does. 3. It does not have "skip this version" at VT does. 4. I don't see the options of download or download/install as VT offers. 5. When I click on download, I am taken to the Cnet site instead of the software downloading. So, now I have 1 or 2 extra steps compared with VT. 6. When I arrive at a download page on the Cnet website I see adverts for Windows software. For example, IE8 which definitely does not run under Mac OS X. 7. Not ready for prime time. [alert admin]

Intuit QuickBooks Pro 2007 9.0.3 R4 (Mac OS X)
Intuit just does not care about Mac OS X users ![]()

Snow Leopard arrives and Intuit acts as if they have never heard of it. QB 2009 fails with Mac OS 10.6 and the update is a month away. QB2007 fails and Intuit says: upgrade. To what? 2009, which does not work! I used QB 2000 for Windows and loved the QBTimer. Do you think it is that difficult to create the same functionality in QB for Mac? I guess it is as it is now 9 years later and QB for Mac still does not have either: a built-in time nor a way to import labor hours from a 3rd-party timer. I am thankful that I don't need payroll as, from what I read, Intuit completely dropped that ball. I don't know what else to buy as I really want a true double-entry bookkeeping system. I am looking at MYOB's AccountEdge. [alert admin]

ClamXav 1.1.1e952 (Mac OS X)
I installed it. I "used" it for 2+ years. I found it confusing and it never caught a single problem. It would break every now and then. I uninstalled it and don't miss it. [alert admin]

CaptureIt! 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
I have been using Snapz for many years, but thought I would take a look at CaptureIt!. I am not sure how to rate it. The interface is VERY DIFFERENT and I am having problems with that. The software works well and I would recommend that you try it out. Just be prepared to spend some time learning it. [alert admin]

Leopard Cache Cleaner 4.0.22 (Mac OS X)
I have used Leopard Cache Cleaner for less than a minute. I launched it and saw that there was a "Force Empty Trash" option. Well, I have had this directory and file in my Trash for 2+ years that I could not delete as the filename was corrupt. I spent hours reading about such beasts and various ways to delete all to no avail. LCC just gave me a completely empty trash can (basket?) in less than 30 seconds. I am off to buy it. [alert admin]

Backblaze 1.0.0.134 (Mac OS X)
On December 9, 2008, I signed up for the $5/mo service and downloaded BackBlaze to my iMac. Two (2) days later, I UNinstalled it and canceled the service. Then, after communicating with tech support, I tried again for another few days. I still think it is not ready for prime time and may never be. Why? Backblaze stops running when my iMac sleeps. I have the usual energy save settings (that is, my iMac sleeps at night and whenever left alone for 15 minutes) and Bb stops uploading. Bb needs to recognize that sleep does not mean stop uploading. And, when SuperDuper! completes its backup, it puts the computer to sleep and that means no backup progress for Bb. My system clock is set to 24-hour time and yet Backblaze tells me the time in a 12-hour AM/PM format. Why doesn't it use the system settings? If I pause Backblaze it tells me that it will restart within 2 hours/ Why don't I get to control when it restarts its upload? There is no progress indicator. I would like something that tells me the KB/s rate of upload. Backblaze is not well behaved. a. It completely stops Transmission from both downloading and uploading whenever the Bb setting is greater than +1 after the mid-point default setting. b. It slows down Dreamweaver to the point on unusability. c. It slows down Firefox so that it is noticeable. d. It slows down Eudora's email checking. This forces me keeping changing the throttle settings for Bb depending upon the time of day. The best [theoretical] backup speed that I can achieve is 7GBytes/day (800 kbps for 24 hours/day). Is this enough? With over 100GBytes to backup, I don't think so as the actual best I was able to achieve during my 5 days of testing was about 4-5GB/day. SuperDuper! Steps all over Backblaze. When running SD, Bb speed drops to 17Kbytes/sec. Why? SD is not transmitting over the interent. Backblaze is a *censored* to remove from your machine. I found a Bb process running on my iMac 4 months after I thought I had removed it. I had to dig really deep to finally kill it. Very annoying. [alert admin]

Things 0.9.6.1 (Mac OS X)
I am really coming around to Things ![]()

I started using Things a few weeks ago and really like it. I am currently reading David Allen's "Getting Things Done" and find that Things helps me get into the GTD mode without being overly restrictive. I tried iGTD (both version 1 and 2), but found it to be more cumbersome to use. I find that the biggest problem with any religion is that implementation tools become way too complicated for someone just getting started. The developers of Things have realized this and created an application that is simple for beginners and is also sophisticated. By the way, I think the price is very reasonable. [alert admin]

http://macupdate.com/ is a direct competitor to VT Pro. I tried a number of years and my conclusion was that they were worse than VT Pro. But, it was a number of years ago.

It is unacceptable that I had to nuke and re-install VT Pro. I did not have to do this with any other application. I don't think it needs updating. 1. Photoshop is shareware. Right? 2. So what if I cannot get the settings for the column views to stick.

Cultured Code does not communicate well ![]()

I like Things and find it useful. I think the price is fair. Where Cultured Code is blowing it is in communicating (or not) with their customers. 1. They removed the link to the forum so only those who have it bookmarked can find it. http://culturedcode.com/things/forums/ 2. They have not posted on their blog for over 3 months. Most recent post was 02FEB2009. 3. Things is at version 1.1.1 and yet the Release Notes pages says: Version 1.0.4. 4. One of…

I would agree about "poor" for a different reason. No user support forum. They use a mailing list. What?! I have reached the point where I won't buy (and, I buy as I don't like free) a product that does not have a forum where users "can talk amongst themselves". Their business model is one of the most off-putting I have ever encountered.

I have been using Fusion for 10 months. I have Windows XP Home installed and it works quite well. I actually find Fusion a tad easier to use than Parallels. And, I find that the Support areas for both products are not user friendly.
