QuicKeys 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)
I felt obliged to offer my review -- after being a QuicKeys user since 1992 or so -- to try to counterbalance the unfathomable negative reviews. There can be no mere "difference of opinion," and chowhound is correct: those unfairly posting low ratings have either a) not actually used the software, b) not the mental capacity to use the software, or c) an agenda. I currently have 406 shortcuts established. Many of those are tied to keystrokes. Many are set to trigger at a particular time, or after a particular event (whenever the Music volume mounts run a sync of my iTunes Library files -- easy to set up, in case you're wondering), and many are set to work only within the scope of a particular application (determine what "Cmd-Shift-S" does on a per-application basis), etc. It's indispensable, insanely powerful, and absurdly easy considering the power you're harnessing. Buy it. Play with it. If you're still not sure, RTFM (though you will likely not need to until/unless you want the more advanced stuff.) Quicksilver's great. It's *not* a replacement. I use them both, and Quicksilver *only* for very specific things (such as it's ability to chain events and perhaps show me a dialog of a custom message after a particular delay.) Otherwise, it's QuicKeys 250 times a day for me. Sitting at a computer that does not have QuicKeys (and more specifically my shortcuts) installed makes me wonder how I could possibly get along without it. It's that good and that indispensable. 10 stars, no joke. [alert admin]

QuicKeys X 4.0b2 (Mac OS X)
I tend to be impulsive and live on the bleeding edge, so I also tend to go through cr*p like this more often than I should. That said: I downloaded and installed the QK4 beta (v1) and fired it up. All of my shortcuts showed up well enough, but they wouldn't trigger. Tried adding new ones. Wouldn't trigger. No problem, I'll revert to QK3 until this is ready for primetime (see where this is going?) The QK4 installer does NOT make a backup of your existing QK sets, nor does it warn you that your existing QK sets will be unusalble after using them in v4. So, my advice, if you want to tinker: navigate to ~/Library/QuicKeys and make a backup of it. Simply right/ctl-click the QuicKeys folder and choose "Compress QuicKeys" and you'll be good to go. If the 4beta doesn't ring your bell, you can delete the QuicKeys folder in your library and unarchive the zip file you just made to be back golden with v3. You've been warned. Me? Since I had just synced my desktop QuicKeys folder to my Laptop, I hadn't really created anything to lose. Just rsync'd the Desktop to the laptop again and I was back in business. Thanks for asking! Cyberduck 3.2 (Mac OS X)
Still doesn't handle invisible files ![]()

I'm troubled by the lack of support for invisible files (a la .htaccess). I have to hop into just about *any* other FTP client to access those files, edit them and then go back to Cyberduck which I use for everything else. When are we fixing this guys?? [alert admin]

Retrospect 6 Driver Update 6.1.14.101 (Mac OS X)
Long Live Retrospect. It is so sad to see what was formerly a GREAT product die on the vine from complete lack of care. What a disgrace that every company since Dantz has tried to eke what dollars it could from the Mac market whilst simultaneously abandoning it. What a disgrace. Here's the bottom line: it's not you. It's not your config. It's not your hardware. The problem is Retrospect. Stop wishing it weren't so and move on. Check out BRU. Or try SuperDuper in a push-type backup scenario. At least they work. Retrospect is dead. Has been for years. Walk on. Nothing more to see here. [alert admin]

1Password 2.5.8 (Mac OS X)
Some have mentioned that it's overkill. Not for me at ALL. Myriad logins, credit cards, saved forms, etc are all handled effortlessly by 1Password. How cool is it that I can finally go to my Gmail page and hit Cmd-\ , get a dropdown menu to choose *which* gmail account I want to log in with, and with an arrow-down and return key I'm logged in. 1Password will optionally submit your form for you as well, or just fill in the form and leave it waiting for you to proceed. The ability to set up various profiles and fill in various forms using them is a HUGE timesaver. In profile one you could have your name and info, in profile 2 your wife's name and info, in profile 3 your alter ego and a separate email address, etc. Securely store your credit cards, including bits like the issuing bank and the verification pin for those sites that need it. 1Password absolutely rocks. Add to that the ability to sync it and have your data travel with you wherever you go, it's AMAZING. [alert admin]

...but I'm loving v2 and find it rock solid. I have no particular affinity for a prefpane vs and app, so that's a non-starter for me. I love the ability to hover over the menu item to get more detailed feedback, and the menu item itself giving a head's up of i/o traffic. I am more than satisfied with the upgrade. [alert admin]

Synergy 2.3 (Mac OS X)
Some of the alternatives offer stronger capabilities in one area or another, but after trying them all I keep coming back to Synergy for the best all around experience. This is an excellent product at a fair price. For all those who complain about high-priced shareware, this one does it all without the price bloat. [alert admin]

Firefox 1.5 (Mac OS X)
The CSS rendering in this latest incarnation got completely munged. Go to CSS Vault and pick some of the CSS-heavy sites there and view in FF1.5 vs. Safari. Safari gets it right, Firefox screw up the layouts completely. Bad news, and definitely a step backwards. To be clear, these are sites that Firefox *used* to render properly. Will hold off on a star rating for now. Has to be a mistake or oversight. [alert admin]

PowerController 1.6 (Mac OS X)
I agree this dev has issues...
but the product is excellent. Tradeoffs are a part of life - think Quark XPress and Quark Inc. In any case, this updater seems to be broken. I have downloaded three times and each time the mpkg generates an error on opening. Opening the mpkg with Pacifist shows a size of 0 bytes. The saga continues. [alert admin]

ProjectsManager 0.1.1 (Mac OS X)
This little starter Xcode project would really be best left to showing off to your (very non-technical) girlfriends, guys. This is NO more efficient than keeping track of your projects in Stickies, except that Stickies will at least let you format your data.
To the Developers: this is a waste of time to the VersionTracker community and everyone who downloads it to give it a whirl. It's not offensive, just simply not useful in any meaningful way. My advice? Wait until you have a product that actually DOES something that people need, and then when that's ready, post it.
To be clear, this is NOT a flame, just a note of encouragement to what seems to be a fledgling company looking for a problem to solve…
Start by solving this one: ProjectsManager is not needed. How you set about fixing that determines whether you ever create a useful product. Good luck. [alert admin]

At least EMC are giving it a go
If it's been working for you well then you should count your fortunes as truly blessed. As of late version 5.x it's been increasingly flaky on corporate Mac systems and networks, and as of full version 6 downright unusable and problematic in the extreme. It *used* to be the best out there; I dropped it as soon as BRU was stable and usable -- years ago. Perhaps your requirements of Retrospect were simple. But if you…

If you are on a Mac your font caches or installed fonts are likely wacky. To clean the cache you can search VersionTracker for 'Font Finagler' which does an excellent job at clearing out stubborn ATS caches. To fix the font problem go into Adium's prefs and see what fonts it expects to be using and then make sure that they are there (or change them to what you have). The jibberish issue is usually related to…

It's 40MB because you're downloading the entire app again; it's not a patch, but the whole tuna. HTH.

I have TWO monitors, so I like to have SIX Docks around! I wish there were more dock products out there, so that I could keep REALLY organized.
Hey, wait. Isn't there a Virtual Desktop Doo-Dad out there? Whoa...how many Desktops does it let you have?? Let's see... if I could have 5 desktops on 2 monitors times 3 Docks... 30 DOCKS!!! AAH-HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!
(Mmmmmmmm. Oooooh. So nice.)
