FontLab Studio 5.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
While FontLab Studio is a great product, a lot of users can save big bucks by checking out the same company's much cheaper Type Tool. If all you want to do is alter a font by cutting-and-pasting elements from some other font (say, to add descending numerals), Type Tool will do you just fine. [alert admin]

Mail Status Control 0.3.0 (Mac OS X)
This little gadget has great promise. There seems to be one problem. I've only had it running for about 8 hours and once it has turned red to indicate that I had mail waiting. When I went to Mail I found nothing new in my Inbox but one item in my Junk file. I'll be curious to see if this happens again. A utility like this should ONLY respond to new items in the Inbox. I hope this will get fixed in the next version. [alert admin]

HyperNext Player 1.13 (Mac OS X)
I have a lot of valuable stored in Hypercard stacks, in fact the need to access this data is about the only reason I haven't trashed Classic from my hard disk. And I bet I'm not the only one in this position. If the authors of HyperNext would invent some scheme that would allow me to import my Hypercard stacks into their environment I'd sit up and take notice, and in fact I'd be willing to pay a good deal more than their current asking price to get my hands on such a thing. I hope the authors of HyperNext visit this site and read this. [alert admin]

Nisus Writer Express 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I hear the all the negative comments about price (especially for upgrades) but, as the song says, let's look on the bright side. At the moment NWE seems to be the only available word processor for the Mac platform that can both handle Unicode and save a document as html (Word for Windows can, but not Word for Mac. Nor can Mellel, Text Edit, or anything else I've seen). Unicode, people, is becoming a Big Thing for many creators of Web pages who needt to use Non-Roman alphabets, use special typographical symbols, scientific, mathematical and musical symbols and so forth, and for many of us with this particular need, a word processor you can use to create a Unicode html document is a very valuable addition to the toolkit. The only available alternative is dealing with Dreamweaver's less-than-mediocre text engine. Backup Simplicity 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I have no problem with the idea of licensing per se (after al, .Mac does the same). What troubles me very much is that I've read the licence document carefully and nowhere does it specify the licensing period. From the Purchase page one gathers that it is supposed to be a year, but in his licence the vendor should contractually guarantee that. It is very disturbing that he does not. Also, we are given the option of purchaing a 3-year licence for more money, and this raises the question of what happens if the vendor happens to go out of business. When you buy software, it continues to function even if the vendor shuts up shop, presumably this would not be the case here. So what would otherwise be an interesting backup scheme seems like a very bad idea indeed. Until the vendor cleans up his act I won't consider trusting him with either my money or my data. HazIce 0.1 (Mac OS X)
Considering what it is, and what modest claims its authors made, Hazice is AMAZING. I doubt anybody can use it is a primary browser because of Java, security , etc. etc., but it seems solid and is jaw-droppingly fast. And it handles Unicode! I'm sure lots of folks are going to be tempted to say "yea, but it should have this and it should have that," but we ought to express our gratitude for what these guys have managed to accomplish. Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 (Mac OS X)
I operate a very text-oriented Web site, so my evaluation is slanted heavily in that direction. I like the very improved onscreen display of text and the fact that now you can enter large amounts of text without nearly as much of that awful "sticky" feel. For my purposes best new feature is that it is Unicode-capable, which facilitates better Web typography as well, of course, as the use of exotic alphabets (this will be a great help for pushing the Mac platform in many foreign markets). But I'm sorry that the designers haven't leveraged this new Unicode more creatively (example - why not have an option so curly quotes would be inserted automatically rather than requiring a trip to a special toolbar, why bury curly single quoes in an awkward table you have to call up specially)? And that awful timelag when you select boldface or italics via a keyboard command still remains. Also, the prices of the app. and the upgrade are exorbitant. There's a great need for a cheap, stripped down wysyg page creation app. that writes modern code and can handle Unicode. [alert admin]

Julius 1.0 (Mac OS X)
This converts Arabic numerals into Roman ones. I think that an app. that could also convert Roman ones into Arabic ones would be a lot more useful. [alert admin]

ScreenShot Plus 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Since OS-X has been rewritten so that screenshots are only saved in PDF (so that Tinker Tool no longer allows you to choose your format), a gadget like this is extremely handy. It works as advertised, and the price is very reasonable. I hope that in a future version the author will be able to add the option of saving as GIF format, but at the moment I understand that the license fee for GIF is prohibitively expensive. Marine Aquarium X 2.0.4 (Mac OS X)
screensaver, but I have to agree that twenty-two bucks way too expensive for a screen saver. I also think that people are much likelier to pirate software if they perceive it to be unreasonably overpricedbecause a kind of "Robin Hood" syndrome sets in that doesn't get triggered by pricing that maintains a far ratio of value to money. If the author didn't charge a price that so blatantly invites piracy, he might find he was actually making MORE money than he is now. Nevertheless, it's a great saver and I'll probably wind up spending the money (although I will grit my teeth and think some very bad thoughts about the author). [alert admin]

If you are having trouble with umlauts and so forth, try this. Go Preferences > Languages and select Unicode (UTF-8) as your language of choice, see if this helps
