DjVu X 4.0 (Mac OS X)
In some cases we probably do NOT need MrSID
I use Mac OS X 10.2.8 (Jaguar) and 10.3 (Panther) on different machines. I also use Mac OS 9 on another computer. Most of my genealogy work is done in OS 9 for now, and I've worried about seeing census images and other online info that has used MrSID in the past. LizardTech is, according to them in a message they sent, not updating MrSID for Mac OS X. After worrying a bit, I tried out a computer that only runs Panther, and connected to one of the ancestry.com sites for SSDI and US Census info. The computer does not currently have any 3rd party graphic software installed (like Photoshop or GraphicConverter). I viewed all the SSDI & Census images just fine. I guess this means Apple's software built into Panther handles the images that supposedly were improved by using MrSID. I detected not even the slightest difference in how they appeared, or in speed at which they came up. [alert admin]

Reunion X 8.0.3 (Mac OS X)
harder than I'd like to use, & this isn't helped by absence of a manual. It's true that lots of info is accessible when you're entering data, but I wish there were a REAL manual. Maybe we should all try to persuade someone to write a manual in the wonderful "Missing Manual" series by Pogue Press & O'Reilly

Eudora 5.2 (Mac OS X)
use Eudora, Pro (when that's what it was called). Can someone remind me if it is fully usable as an IMAP mail client? I want to keep my mail on the server since I read it from different locations. Danalf [alert admin]

GEDitCOM 3.50b1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
try this! It would be very helpful if there were a review of the different Mac genealogy software items. I have looked without success, but am not very experienced with such software and may have missed the right place. If there is such a site it would be nice to know of it. StuffIt Deluxe 7.0.1 (Mac OS 9)
"...newbie"--MAC OS X "is confusing enough" On Stuffit 7.0.1, why does it say stuff is fixed for OSX, but over on the right it says up to 9.x? Please enlighten us soon; I'm afraid to try it out because who knows what it'll do to OS 9.2.2, which runs great for me >95% of the time. Danal. [alert admin]

RestNow 1.1 (Mac OS 9)
history since I started using a cable modem! And the first try broke off in midstream. Anyone else know how to make the download work? Danal [alert admin]

TechTool Lite 3.0.4 (Mac OS 9)
frequent desktop rebuilds, and this is what I use, This is better than Apple's cmd-opt at startup. Danal in Ann Arbor [alert admin]

MacSFTP 1.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
unsuccessful in several tries. Possibly at least part of the problem is that the instructions, which as in the case of Fetch or Anarchie/Interarchy, are barely necessary, are inadequate for me. I'm surprised at having problems since FTP is usually such an easy thing! Maybe it's me, however. It would be helpful if the author were to provide a few working links so a new user could learn it.› [alert admin]

I am unable to get SW 3.5.1 to work. With 384 MB RAM, and virtual memory either on or off, any file dropped on SW immediately leads to an out-of-memory error, and nothing happens. How in the heck do I make this software work? (Also, Aladdin's support has been a big fat zero so far; neither e-mail response to my sending them the problem, nor was someone at their phone number who knew about it, If anyone knows where I can find good info on the web or USENET, please post it here! ShrinkWrap 3.51 was still better than Disk Copy. Using the Aladdin installer, I installed my copy. But I can't get it to work: it quits and leaves me with an "out of memory" error message. There are 512 MB of real memory installed, and having Virtual Memory onn or off makes no difference. I must be missing some basic point. Any helpful comments would be greatly appreciated! --Danal [alert admin]

The 17.4 MB patchDownloadEvent.jhtml is supposed to open to a .dmg file. When I downloaded it in Mac OS X 10.3.6, it did nada-nothing-riendutout. It takes Roxio awhile to reply to questions in my experience, so I went to an OS 9.2.2 drive (dont laugh! it works!) and tried it there. The same download occurred, but this time a nice, ready-to-use Toast Titanium 6.0.7.dmg file (17.3 MB) generated from the patchDownloadEvent.jhtml!

McAfee is still dropping the ball. Their Tech Support, in effect, says T.S. My question was what version of Virex to run on a Mac OS 9.2.2 drive. The reply was "you need to obtain Version 5". I said I already have 6.1. Reply: "sir, I told you what's on our information sheet.

I sure thank you and versiontracker.com for the info that Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 runs and works well on Panther! On the phone, after a v e r r y long wait, Adobe told me that Photoshop Elements 2.0 runs on Mac OS X 10.1.3 "or higher". I said does that mean OS X 10.3 "Panther", and the guy just said "what we mean is on the web site". Same…

Does Photoshop Elements 2.0 work with Panther?
Thank the Lord for this group! When I phoned Adobe to ask, right after our Panther machine arrived, an Adobe person said Elements 2 didn't run on it. This scared us into not installing it. Since then we've been comforted by several reports from folks we know who have it installed in 10.3 and are happily using it as before. Danal
