Epson Connectivity Plug-in Update 1.0bE (Mac OS X)

Gimp-Print is the answer

For everyone who owns an Epson printer [as well as others] no longer supported by the manufacturer in OS X - install Gimp-Print available at: www.gimp-print.sourceforge.com It transformed my Epson 1520 from a doorstop to printer in 5 easy steps. I have also found that the range of options is greater and the print quality superior with Gimp-Print than with drivers supplied by the printer manufacturers. btw - if your network printer has a type B ethernet card, reset the IP address to one which is on the appropriate subnet. Try it. You'll like it! [alert admin]

TransparentDock 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

I hope this works!!

I installed 10.2.8 on a G4 with 1.12 GB of memory and subsequently used TransparentDock 2.0.2 to modify the Dock. Upon clicking on the "Apply" button the dock was striped from the display and then the fun began - The dock crashed, rebooted, crashed etc etc it was in an endless loop. Tried all of the standard approaches including fsck. Finally had to reinstall OS 10.2 and run Software Update until my system is up to date - but where is 10.2.8. Maybe I am just groggy but I do not see it on Apple's website. Has it been pulled? [alert admin]

VectorWorks 10.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Ease of use and hybred environment make VW the best choice.

VW is the only CAD application that I am aware of that can be "self-taught" and have the user achieve a reasonable degree of proficiency. A testament to its ease of use. Support is the best. We have never had a software problem but have sought advice on CAD issues. If the tech cannot solve the problem over the phone we e-mail the file for examination. We ususally have a response in less than 36 hours. Documentation could be better - and it is getting better. Documentation for earlier versions indicated that someone skipped 8th grade Enlish. Things a better now but the occassional lapse is distracting. Stability under OS X is excellent. I have had only one crash and none since increasing RAM to 1.12 GB on a G4. [alert admin]

VectorWorks 10.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Keeps getting better - except the download link. Solution

We have used VectorWorks since it was MiniCAD and it just keeps getting better. In particular, the developers seem to have rediscovered their Mac origins. The Palettes are starting to look better and this version incorporates "Window Shading". It is missing some features; e.g., print only the screen; 4 simultaneous views similar to 3D modeling programs and viewports. However, the other features - particularly the 2D - 3D hybred environment make it uniquely appealing. With regard to the download link. If it does not work on the first try - use an FTP application. We use Interarchy and the connection is virtually instantaneous. [alert admin]

MacStumbler 0.7b (Mac OS X)

Works great - less filling

I have used MacStumbler on my powerbooks for about a year [starting with version .06b. Never had a problem and provides the added visablility that airport lacks. [alert admin]

gimp-print 4.2.5 (Mac OS X)

Alchemy - Doorstop to Printer in 10 minutes!!

I thought that our Epson 1520s were relegated to being hi-tech door stops until I installed GimpPrint. You have to be aware of installation particulars - but that is why there are FAQs and instructions - RTFM. GimpPrint converted me from an OpenSource supporter to an advocate. [alert admin]

gimp-print 4.2.5 (Mac OS X)

GimpPrint tip for Epson owners [and possibly others]

If you are running Epson 1520s [and probably other Epson printers] on an ethernet network you need to change the default IP address to one that falls within the network segment on which the printer resides. Those printers have a Type B Ethernet Card installed. Depress the little black button for >3 seconds and a summary page will print with the default address. You can then change the address by using the GimpPrint [CUPS] Browser Admin feature to address the printer. From that point forward it functions just like an installed OS X driver. [alert admin]

FileType 1.0b2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

I have not…

used the application long enough to rate it - so I will not. Just a general observation on the comment by n.hillyer and the responses it generated. Yes - RAM is dirt cheap and hard disks are even cheaper. Back in the days when a 32 MB core cost $15,000 [in 1955 $$s; not to speak of processor speed] programmers and their bosses were very careful about the way they constructed programs. A lot of effort was expended in paring-down code and eliminating superfluous elements. Spaggetti code was unheard of. The cost-benefit ratio dictated that the effort concentrate on writing clean code that maximized software functionality ane minimized reliance on hardware resources. In short, the cost of the programmer was less than the cost of the hardware. btw - the ancillary benefit was elegant powerful software. As the hardware became cheaper and the cost-benefit ratio reversed it became acceptable and even required that code be reused and reworking of code minimized. With RAM and disk prices what they are today, it is the only ecomomically justifiable course to take in the development of commercial software and even more so if you intend to develop Freeware or Shareware. Still - some of long for elegant code. I might also note that like everything in life there is a cost for this approach. [Life is double entry bookkeeping.] Spaggetti code is a major source of program and system crashes; memory leaks and the whole spectrum of ills and ails that beset the computer industry and users today. Sorry for this somewhat overly long; somewhat off-topic post. But as Dr Johnson once said, "I regret the length of this letter; I did not have the time to write a short one." Which, by the way applies to programming as well. [alert admin]

TechTool Lite 3.0.1 (Mac OS 9)

Installed on a…

G4 running 9.1 + all relevant updates. The interface looks great and would seem intuitive until you run into problems. More specificall, I ran the Check/Repair DeskTop utility and it made the System Folder invisible. No way to recover is indicated. If this happened to an inexperienced user they would be SOL. I was lucky to have a copy of ResEdit available and I was able to make the System Folder visible. [alert admin]

ConceptDraw Viewer 1.0.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

This is a…

great product that does exactly what the authors claim. I have used it to open and view flowcharts created in TopDown as well as jpg, pict, gif, and tiff versions of drawings and files created in a variety of applications. The only problems encountered were with visio drawings but Odessa has a Visio to ConceptDraw converter - also free. I liked it so much I purchased the commercial product and additonal copies for my collaboration team - some of whom work on PCs. 5 Stars! [alert admin]

Crashes on Print!

Comments like this are useless without informatioin with regard to the user's CPU, OS & version number, printer model and method of attachment to the CPU (e.g., IP, USB etc). If you are going to comment on software, give us enough information to make the comment useful.

gimp print sucks

What exactly is the problem? 1000s of users have no trouble and use this application where the hardware vendor [read Epson in particular] has failed; and you cannot get the software to work? I guess that everyone else is stupid and you are the lone genius.

Steve please tell me where to store my files

So Old School has 17 presentation applications? I don't think so; I would like to know what they are. I suspect that OS means 17 data files; the result of using an application to create something. If a commentor does not know the difference between the two he should resist the urge to demonstrate that ignorance and spend more time learning the basics. RTFM Perhaps then the comments will be more to the point…
