ATI Displays 4.4 (Mac OS X)

Works fine on G3 iBook

Installs fine on G3 800 Dual-USB iBook. This update installs a control panel for the OEM RADEON 7500 video card, which is very nice to have. Strongly suggested just for the abillity to over-ride video settings for certain apps. [alert admin]

MAL Conduit 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Works great,

This release of MAL Conduit works fine with Entourage (for me), and it's wonderful to be able to sync to AvantGo again. I only have two points of criticism: 1) Although I haven't put a stopwatch to it yet, MAL Conduit seems to take much longer to sync than my AvantGo conduit on my Windows 98 machine at work. I look forward to future refinement. 2) I wish the conduit gave better feedback during sync, like how many pages were being retrieved. Still, this conduit does exactly what it's supposed to and it is very reliable. Bravo! [alert admin]

PDF Browser Plugin 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Apple should buy this...

Apple should buy this plug-in and incorporate it into Safari for the Tiger release. It works great, falls into all the Apple interface rules...hard work that plugs an obvious hole for Apple users should be rewarded - not ripped off like they did to the Konfabulator guys. [alert admin]

FinkCommander 0.5.3 (Mac OS X)

Works great on Panther...

Fink Commander works great with Panther, as did 0.5.2., and I think Apple should include Fink Commander (and Fink) with the Dev Tools package. I don't even use the CLI on my Mandrake box for package management, I use KPackage. When a tool is this good for OS X, why not use it? [alert admin]

FinkCommander 0.5.2 (Mac OS X)

Malformed URL...correct link:

The URL is screwed up -- the correct one to Sourceforge is: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/finkcommander/FinkCommander_0.5.2.dmg?download [alert admin]

Virus GarageBand Loop Collection 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Bittorrent Solution...

Bittorrent is the best solution for something like this. A legal file with a rabid user base. I'd be happy to seed if i could get the file... [alert admin]

Perfect Pitch 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Works great with Griffin iMic

This tuner works great with my Griffin iMic USB input. A perfect companion to my Les Paul and GarageBand. Wish GarageBand had this built-in. Finally someone "got it."

Thanks for a perfect app. [alert admin]

Name the Song 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Very buggy, should be called a beta.

It seems that my original review has disappeared, so this is a revised post. BTW, this is a completely unbiased review and I hope the developer can take some honest criticism instead of bashing me on their homepage. 1) During my test, the typing was a consistent obstacle to many players who knew the answer but continuously got trounced by those of us who touch-type. Also, spelling can be tricky: For instance, "Whole Lotta Love." Those who typed "Whole Lot Of Love" were frustrated and logged off. My suggestion of multiple choice was applauded by other players during the on-line chat as a fair solution. Either that or the interface needs to be more intelligent and be more fair to slower typists and typing errors. I understand why unFun would disagree but this directly affects gameplay and that's why I mentioned it. 2) During the test, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came on and all five players input-ed the correct answer, all told we were wrong, and then told the correct answer was "Smells Like Teen Spirit." It may have been a glitch, but it happened. 3) Most of the MIDI is quite good, but there was at least one time where none of the players couldn't recognize the song. Again, that directly affects gameplay and that's why it was included in the review. 4) The songs did repeat in the third round of play. I understand that this may be because unFun hasn't had a chance to put in more songs, but that really isn't my problem. It made the game incredibly boring and allowed me to destroy anyone who logged on. In the end, on the Rock category, I was the only player left because I knew all the answers. That's unFun, pardon the pun (and the rhyme.) 5) I was disappointed that, between rounds, I had to watch an ad for unFun's other product instead of being able to use the chat feature to talk to other players. After all, since you're busy typing the answers, when to you have a chance to chat? 6) It changed my desktop color and I had to change it back. WHY? I expect a program that's supposedly out of beta to at least leave my desktop alone. These are MY preferences - butt out. I don't want to have to change my desktop back every time I play. I wonder what other prefs are screwed up? 7) On OS X, the help widow doesn't work. An empty pop-up appears. Big help. [alert admin]

microSynth 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Cool looking but too frustrating

This is a really cool-looking app but I find it too hard to do anything useful with. 1) The transport controls are way too small 2) Transport controls are too dark to distinguish which button is which. 3) Pressing the stop button doesn't stop recording, if in record mode. 4) Transport needs to have "start of track" and "end of track" buttons. I don't want to be forced to use the Track Editor to simply move to the beginning or end of a sequence. Incredibly annoying. 5) The Track Editor (sequencer) is archaic and completely counter-intuitive. 6) For some reason, I can't record over a track if I make a mistake. I have to delete the track and create a new one. 7) I can't delete a mistake on a track - I have to re-record the whole track. No punch-in? 8) There's no simple loop function. 9) Buttons for New Track and Delete Track should exist in the track editor, not only in a pull down. Annoying. 10) No graphic representation of sequence (see #5) I'd like to see dedicated transport controls, perhaps on a floating palette (hopefully it could dock.) On my iBook, the tiny transport buttons are practically unusable. It may look cool, but form over function fails. Why does it need to be so small, anyway? Strictly speaking, I'm not typing an e-mail while I'm recording a sequence, so why not enlarge the "keyboard" a bit? A good "freeware" toy, but in no way worth $20. [alert admin]

FastPitch 1.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Jumpy, but promising

First of all, let me give thanks to the developer for *finally* bringing a bringing an instrument tuner to OS X with a real acoustic input! For the product: Tested with my iBook built-in mike, the tuner is a little too sensitive for my acoustic guitar. It's true that some instruments have complex harmonics that may confuse FastPitch, but they don't seem to bother my 8 dollar Korg tuner nearly as much. Unfortunately, I don't have an audio-in jack so I can't tell if the situation would improve with a direct connection. I hope that the next version of FastPitch will have some sort of sensitivity control to smooth out the "jumpiness" of the needle, as many professional tuners do. Otherwise, this is a great, easy-to-use product, and the frequency meters are a nice touch. I'm looking forward to the refinement of this application. [alert admin]
