Little Snitch 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Excellent

G5/10.3.4 I have had NO problems (knock on wood) and I've efen been playing with the rules (breaking a long standing rule of my own of NOT playing with firewalls). I've found that if I eliminate a rule that I need, LS will ask if a connection should be allowed. If I say yes, then it is added. I can then edit the rule (in System Preferences) to make it perminate, or whatever. If I make a rule that says "Deny", then a window appears saying that the connection cannot be made (or something like that) and I can check the rule that applies to that application. I am now very confident that I have no Spyware. This is great for us paranoids. I've been omitting a few perminate rules on purpose just to have the applications ask for permission to log onto the internet - a power trip. I'll simply edit them to perminate when I get over my trip. [alert admin]

Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3 (Mac OS X)

Relative links

One of the very convient aspects of CCC (over, say, Syncronize Pro) is that when I copy my primary System Volume onto, say, another drive (volume), alias' set up (Drop Drawers) will reference the application (or whatever) in the duplicated volume, not the original applications. This is true for the applications in Apple's chosen location in the System/Applications folder. Applications elsewhere are still referenced as they were. I find this particularly useful because I have my diagnostics/utility applications in the System Volume, so that if I have drive or system problems, I can work on them from an entirely independent system. True, I would always be able to open finder and access the duplicated applications directly, but CCC allows me to use my "launcher" in a natural manner on seperate Systems. This makes a very "mirror-like" backup system which, for all pratical purposes, is identical in useage as the original. Using Syn Pro (assuming I used it correctly ... more complex) I had to re-reference my launcher, a real pain when trying to keep a current duplication system. [alert admin]

ramBunctious 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Not good for OS10.3

I've used rambunctious fo r years on several versions of OSX. I think the app is Great. However, I haven't gotten it to work on Panther, OSX.3. It does make a "misterious" disk that shows up in Disk Utility, but it doesn't show up in the Finder. The only way I know of getting rid of it is to reboot. [alert admin]

Drop Drawers X 1.6.1 (Mac OS X)

I've used DD…

ever since X.1. It has been stable (though, drawers have had to be re-opened, but it works across different users - like root), anyway. I have been using it as a launcher. There is a LOT of depth in this application. This and Path Finder are my GUI(and TinkerTool to make the Dock behave). [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 2.0 (Mac OS X)

palamino: SP apparently…

does this when working from the root user (or using Rooter), or at least it doesn't state that it doesn't have premission to copy it. Whereas, when I used the "run as root" command in SP, it did state such. I have successfully restored my system from backups, from root. (?) [alert admin]

Labels X 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Seems to work…

very well as advertised, as far as I checked. However, it does not communicate with Pathfinder (SNAX), or versa visa, which is the Finder that I use. Darn, so close! It's probably Pathfinder's "fault". I'll write them a note. Only four Stars, darn! [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 2.0 (Mac OS X)

My have to…

change my vote: It is advertized that booting into root isn't required for backing up a bootable volume, but when using the "run as root" command, SP still missed a couple files (such as .ds, as I recall). Perhaps I did something wrong? An easy solution was to use Rooter by MacMagna, which allows any application dragged upon it to be run with root privlidges ... seems to work very well. Since I gave it a 5*, and I want it to have a 4*, I'll give it a 3* here. [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 2.0 (Mac OS X)

I have used…

Synch Pro for over a year now, and have never had a problem (knock on wood). Good control, works with DropDrawers and Dock very well. Does tend to keep asking for the registration code when going between startup volumes and/or root user. I'm very pleased with it. [alert admin]
