About us plug-ins 1.0.0 (Mac OS X)
I've confirmed the plug-ins work with Leopard on Intel; still no reports on Leopard on PPC. [alert admin]

About us plug-ins 1.0.0 (Mac OS X)
These plug-ins are written in Applescript, so they are fairly robust to OS version changes. While I've only tested them under OS X 10.4 (Tiger), I expect that they work as expected under 10.5 (Leopard). They may well work under 10.3 (Panther), also. I'd appreciate reports on whether or not they work under versions of the OS other than Tiger. I hope you find these useful. [alert admin]

Server Vault 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)
This seems like it could be useful to someone dealing with large numbers of web sites that are all hosted in the same environment. I was able to get it to work with sftp simply by using "sftp" instead of "ftp" in the URL, but it does not seem to support WebDAV. I think the interface could use some work. It is very structured and does not fit the projects that I am working on. Some level of abstraction could add a lot to this application. My only real concern with it is that it does not seem to handle passwords securely. Ideally, passwords should be stored in a keychain, but at a minimum, they should not be visible in the main application window. [alert admin]

RTVWidget 0.4 (Mac OS X)
Networked remote control for ReplayTV ![]()

This widget acts as a remote control for ReplayTVs. It seems like an adequate substitute if you have problems with the wireless remote included. The major limitation being that the ReplayTVs must already be configured with networking enabled. It is not a practical means of controlling a ReplayTV when the attached television is not visible (e.g., from another room). There is no documentation with the widget, though its configuration is somewhat evident if you click the "i" icon in the lower right corner. Also, the first three sentences of the developer's page give complete, albeit terse, instructions for installation and configuration. Once I entered the IP address for my ReplayTV, it just worked. The biggest limitation I see is that the buttons are divided into two groups, so you do not have direct access to all parts of the remote at once. While the division is logical, it is an impediment to easy use. The widget could also use a face lift. The current interface is ugly. While it preserves the basic layout of the buttons on the standard remote, it loses a lot in the translation. I think certain choices in the standard remote's design reflect the expectation that it will be held in your hand. As the widget is not handheld, I don't know that it is worthwhile to faithfully recreate the layout of the standard remote. [alert admin]

SimpleTimer 0.4 (Mac OS X)
This is a nicely executed timer application. In my limited testing (only had it a day), it performs quite well. Saved alarms that auto-start on opening can cut out a click or two from starting a timer for common tasks like moving clothes from the washer to the dryer. Also, as OS X disables "at" by default, this is a really easy way to schedule checking a web page at a particular time. Its flexibility and design open the possibility to use it in more interesting ways, though I think the scheduler will need a little more flexibility to reach its full potential. The developer is also responsive to feedback. [alert admin]

Yes, Splunk is free, though I don't think it is open. Splunk has mixed licensing. The free version is limited to indexing 500 MB/day. Commercial versions have higher limits, additional enterprise friendly features, and offer support.

No "but". Interarchy is a very nice industrial strength solution. It happily transfers thousands of files in a single drag. Interarchy is highly configurable; has a sophistcated bookmarking system; network diagnostics; and also supports HTTP, HTTPS, WebDAV, and S3 (I haven't used S3 yet). It is what I use to get the job done. When friends/colleagues have problems transferring files with other FTP clients, Interarchy has always been a workable solution.
