Drive Genius 2.2 (Mac OS X)
Attempting an upgrade to OS 10..5.8 on a G4 Powerbook, software update reported a lack of space. I therefore set Drive Genius to look for unwanted localisations and unneeded universal binaries and cache and temporary files and went to bed. The next morning the drive was dead and proved irrecoverable by Disk Utility and Disk Warrior which could not even see the Partition. I can only presume that DG drove the hard drive into the ground with its scanning. This was not a new machine but the HD failure at this time was too much of coincidence for me. A most unfortunate and expensive outcome from the first attempt at using this costly software. I would not recommend. [alert admin]

CopyPaste Pro 1.0.9 (Mac OS X)
Worked for two months then suddenly stopped ![]()

Long since my favourite 3rd party application, this latest version (1.09) worked great for a couple of months then suddenly stopped. This seemed to coincide with my installing the latest version of Unsanity's MenuExtra enabler but I am not sure. Has anyone else seen this problem? Until then I hugely enjoyed using it, although it is a little less ergnomic and slightly more clunky in some ways than the older version (2.6.3) - which just did what was needed and fast. However, this version is 'prettier' and it is a bit easier to archive and access old clips - very useful for multiple and repetitive tasks. The app. is not quite so vital as it was now that that Word has a 'paste and match style' option clearly indicated in the edit menu, but it is still useful for the ability to save multiple clips in a row and then to paste multiple clops in a row without having to go back and forth between documents. A pity it no longer works. I would happy to pay a really solid wack for this application if it were only more robust. [alert admin]

MacSpeech Dictate 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I ordered a copy from Amazon UK which did not have a registration number attached, but Macspeech sales support supplied one straight away. No problem with installation, however I have experienced some sort of software conflict that prevents Dictate from recognising the microphone. I followed all of their trouble shooting tips in the manual to no effect. Finally I created and booted up in a new virgin identity and it worked with only a few hiccups. Training took less than five minutes (as advertised) so long as I spoke clearly it interprets pretty much every word - even long sentences spoken quite fast. Under my usual identity though it is still no-go. I have uninstalled Audio Hijack and anything else that I can imagine might be interfering with no success. I have yet to receive any advice from Macspeech technical support as to what to do next, so if anyone has any suggestions as to what might interfering with this software please let me know. For those with a virgin Mac this is clearly a great application, but if you have installed any other third party apps. I guess it is a case of caveat emptor. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5 (Mac OS X)
It seems that Versiontracker Pro 4.5 cannot remember the password registering the machine under Leopard. They are aware of the problem, but surprisingly this still has not been fixed. This means you have to re-register your machine, via preferences, every time you start up VP Pro. This is becoming tedious so hopefully a fix will be available soon. [alert admin]

Leopard and renwal experiences ![]()

After problems with earlier versions I find that version 4.5 works well under Leopard. The automatic install button notably works much more often (and effectively) than before (a thumbs up to the developers). This made my updating for the switch to Leopard a speedy process. I now have four machines updating themselves happily with 4.5 There is one minor problem: the software on VT 4.5 forgets my password when the programme quits. This may be connected with revisions to the Keychain under Leopard but I am told they are working on it. Feedback on this and subscription problems has been ok, but with one major disppointment: the promised free license to Mac Pilot never materialised. Curiously, e-mails on this point have not been replied to. It is longer a priority I guess, now that I have renewed... [alert admin]

Airfoil 2.0.0 (Mac OS X)
Support for multiple Airport express stations is what people have been crying out for ever since the Express station was invented. This is every wireless geeks' dream as well as a solution to a very practical problem that everyone at some time experiences. Not only are mutliple airport express stations supported, but they are synchronised, and you can stream whatever you like at them - itunes, internet radio, CDs, etc. There is even local montoring - although this is in real time and not (as yet) synchronised with the remote speakers. The purchase price for new users is very cheap considering the lack of alternatives and very generously this terrific upgrade is offered free to existing users. Overall performance depends, of course, on the power and range of your wireless network, interference, etc., but I have had no problems. [alert admin]

A Better Finder Rename 7.0 (Mac OS X)
This is superior to Skooby renamer and File Sequencer due to the simplicity and attractiveness of its interface and its pop up menu functionality. Control-click wherever you are, and Better Finder Renamer goes to work on the files you have selected. With no check-boxes, but a drop down menu instead, the interface makes it VERY unlikely that you will ever accidentally modify a file in a way you don't want to. All credit to File sequencer for being freeware, but the accessibility and ease of this application makes is easily worth the investment. Using A Better Finder Rename has definitely made my life easier. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.0fc1 (Mac OS X)
Trashing the preferences solved most of my problems with this update, but there seems to be something wrong with the 'search' function: it does not produce results and there is no way to stop it once it has started short of quitting. An explanation (server busy?) or fix for this would be much appreciated. [alert admin]

Opera 8.0.2 (Mac OS X)
After installing this update web pages went all weird when scrolling. The problem was fixed by quitting trashing the preferences and starting again. The main improvement seems to be a faster start up time. It used to hang for ages. It is still a longer start up time that Safari but once up and running is noticeably faster in rendering pages than Safari 1.3. I also really like the option to open tabs in the background so you can carry on reading while other pages load. This alone makes it worth using as it is a huge timesaver. [alert admin]

Meteorologist 1.4.3 (Mac OS X)
I have tried (and paid for) the alternatives and this is the ONLY menu weather programme out there which offers a FULL range of features including extended forecasts for multiple locations and which correctly reports US AND Non-US locations. It does take a little while to refresh, but the end result is ACCURATE for locations all over the world. I am so glad that it is still working and available. Keep up the good work! [alert admin]

I have found (thanks to Mark Conrad on a Macspeech Google forum) the solution to the mike recognition problem. You have to switch your computer to recognise the USB mike BEFORE you try to set up a profile. If you haven't done this you will have problems. The solution is as follows: Navigate to the "Tools" menu, select "Profile" Assuming your microphone headset is already plugged into the USB post of your Mac (and set to…

See the old app QUILTING. The menu bar for this included all currently running apps, to facilitate switching. it couldn't though quit background applications. If you could imitate this interface, you would have a really indispensable product.
