Sunrise 1.6.4 (Mac OS X)

entering a URL

I'm using a MacBook Pro and MacOS X 10.4.11. I saw this app in the weekly VT updates email and decided to try it as a user, not developer. I visited several pages but noticed odd behavior when entering a URL. In all my Mac browsers, I use Cmd-L to highlight the Location field to enter a URL. In Sunrise, if I type "http://" after the second slash the field clears. What?!? If I enter something like "news.google.com" if works just fine completing the URL by adding the "http://" protocol prefix. Is it just me? Paul [alert admin]

Porticus 1.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Looks good, needs a feature

Well, I discovered this app in the VT weekly updates. Since I've used fink and FinkCommander in the past and I use MacPorts now, I gave it a try. It shows out-of-date installed packages using red text. I decided to upgrade one package and clicked the "update dependencies" check box. The process worked to install several and I saw a number of errors run by. What I discovered is that I could not select all in its log window. I could drag-select the log text but I could not copy. I think this is a needed feature. Working at the command line, I upgrade or install packages in a new Terminal window and watch or later review the log. That way, I can attempt installation of individual dependent packages. Ahh... wait. I see there is a View:Show Log item in the menu that will open the Porticus.log file in Console and I get a listing like the command-line output of the port command. I'll be comparing the same update install from the command-line later today to see if it generates the same errors. I like the interface and may incorporate Porticus in the future. I really would like the log copy feature in the apps GUI without needing to visit the menu and Console, though. I think it would be more intuitive. :-) Paul P.S. I see "Help isn't available for Porticus" in the menu. It is intuitive enough for MacPorts users, though. [alert admin]

Fastcrop 1.02 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

cannot recommend

Program needs administrative privileges to run. Default save is to the program folder. Demo version includes a huge "Please register" watermark/banner across saved image. Cannot recommend. Couldn't really tell if auto-crop worked, for that matter. The banner text ran over the area that should have been cropped. [alert admin]

Dr. Hardware 2005 6.5.0e (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Doesn't work

I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2. D/L and installed Dr. Hardware. Read the cautions in the readme. Nothing else running. Exited what I could that was running in the system tray. Launched and ran the program four different times. First, clicking System Overview button, subsequent clicking side buttons: Hardware, etc. Froze each time requiring reboot. Help is useless. Cannot recommend. [alert admin]

WirelessMon 1.0 1000 (Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

mini mode is great

I forgot to mention, the mini-mode is great. Screen shots are on the developer's site. You can hover over the wave icon in top right corner and get your connection strength. Fast feedback. [alert admin]

WirelessMon 1.0 1000 (Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

lots of stats

Having trouble with my wireless network, I searched for a utility for my Win2K box using Belkin USB wireless adapter where the connection kept dropping. Wireless Monitor has a number of tabs for configuration, graphs, and statistics. I found it handy to keep open with my adapter's wireless monitor as I browsed checking connection reliability. One caveat: the default sampling rate of one second is too short. I had success with 5 seconds. I found 3 seconds also too short, where clicking links would time out. I'm still in testing but probably will purchase this shareware soon for my toolkit. BTW, visit the developer's site and read the FAQ. [alert admin]

Version Tracker Pro getting worse and worse

I also found VTPro gave frustrating false positives, when I knew I had the latest version. At one point, I actually used TinkerTool System to uninstall VTPro and its components and then rebooted and manually re-installed it. It worked a bit better I believe. For some time now, it lists Komodo, Opera and Eclipse as needing updates. All are current. I know they are so I ignore them in the VTPro report. I do see that Komodo…
