SnapTalk beats any mail program hands down on a LAN/WAN  

Back in the pre-MacOSX days, our lab used a little tool called 'Broadcast' to quickly snap comments between colleagues. When we started upgrading our Macs to OSX, we were forced to leave behind that little utility that had become so familiar and useful. We felt so incomplete despite still being able to convey files via email or through our fileserver that I scoured the internet until I found GlassBead SnapTalk. We are pretty much an island of Macs in a PC world, so it was great that Windows users could similarly enjoy chatting to Mac users using this great tool. Also, our Division extends over more than one subnet and geographical locations and it allowed instant communication between our adult and paediatric hospitals as well as our research unit. What's great about SnapTalk is that, unlike conventional mail, the message is in-your-face, prompting instant replies. And when our campus wide IMAP system goes down, we just keep on snapping (admittedly with a smile on our faces). What's great as well is that instant communication does not stop when we move outside our WAN. By setting up one machine as a SnapTalk server through the click of a button, users on the move anywhere in the world can instantly send instant messages or files to home base. One small downside is that users need to avoid quitting SnapTalk (it hides conveniently away though) to stay on-line. Other great features are the ability to send to predefined groups and to keep transcripts of chat sessions. [alert admin]
