Bean 2.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Newbie but love at first ... use

I've tried so many note pads, sticky type apps, journaling apps etc. Pages has the templates yada yada - which is nice sometimes. Most of the time however, I just want to send something more than a sticky and less than Pages (and DEFINITELY less than Word). Preview is what I want but unfortunately that's not an option (I have PDF Pro etc but it's still not the same). TextEdit is ok but it's so basic that I still have to use other Word Processors often. Enter Bean! YAY!!! I can use it for 90% of what I need to do. The built in link to Dictionary is brilliant. Even for stories or articles (I'm a writer) that will eventually need a creative writing app, I can jot down my initial idea in Bean and transfer it. And the price is right! Thank you Bean people. Sidenote 1.7.3 (Mac OS X)

One of my Indispensible Apps!

The problem with Stickies, for me is the lack of easy access. I have to keep them in the doc (or figure another way to launch quickly) OR keep them open all the time. I guess that would be ok IF that wouldn't cause my desktop to be covered with more junk. Stickies makes my computer screen as cluttered as the scraps of paper all over my physical desktop! To find any note, I have to sift through the pile to find notes that may be behind other notes. The Stickies type apps I've been able to find are still apps that must be launched. They have generally addressed the clutter problem by giving an index or search feature but often have gone into over kill and are no longer simple little apps. Enter Sidenote, which is such an improvement over the rest, I can't believe Apple hasn't added it to the system. Choose a hotkey or an area of the screen to touch and Sidenote scrolls out for use! Brilliant! You can even sync over multiple machines by setting the preferences to save to a network storage device (I use my Mobile Me iDisk). My only gripe - No updates since 2007. If I had not been using Sidenote so long, I probably would not take a chance. It generally makes me nervous to use software that has not been updated within a year or so, but I have to say, I'm up to Leopard 10.5.7 and Sidenote it is still operating fine. [alert admin]

Vuze 4.2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Agree with adavey and mkultra

No point in repeating what has been said so I'll say I agree with adavey and mlkultra below. More is not always better. Elegance can be found in simplicity. I don't wanna work this hard or I'd have bought a cheap PC long ago. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Stick to the website

I've been a loyal, paying user of versiontracker.com for years. Remember Apple's "Sherlock"? I loved that little app and use the Versiontracker plug-in daily (or more). VersionTracker.com is still the first place I go for software research but VersonTracker Pro is a big disappointment. It used to be ok but for some reason, the past few versions have become worse, not better. Others have described their particular problems so I won't belabor that. I'll just say, in my opinion as a creative person who wants easy to use software, VTpro is not that. Stick to the website. Most software has an automatic update feature in the preferences. Use that. MeshWrite 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

$62 and no demo? I don't think so.

I'm a notorious shareware and gadget junkie but even I won't spend $62 on an unknown piece of software from an unknown developer with NO DEMO? They must be kidding. The program looks like it's got potential. I'd have given it a shot if it had been anything close to reasonable. [alert admin]

Evernote 1.1.6 (Mac OS X)

Simply Nothing Else Like Evernote!

If you are a highly organized person, working in a structured environment, working exclusively from one location and one computer, never need access to anything - anywhere else but this one location OR if you work for a secret organization with spies tracking and attempting to decode your every file - perhaps Evernote is not for you. If not, Evernote is without a doubt the easiest to use file cabinet ever invented. [alert admin]

Audiobook Builder 1.0.10 (Mac OS X)

Does What it Says!

Rather than repeat what has already been said, I will just add an amen to the previous reviews. Audiobook Builder works as described. Simple and effective. Use it with M4PConverter and it'll pay for itself. Save $ and the planet by not wasting CDs to burn legally owned media - only to import back to a HD for storage. [alert admin]

Jungle Disk 2.0 beta 4 (Mac OS X)

Leopard's built in Time Machine does the same thing

I don't understand. Mac solutions - Apple's Backup/Mac.com/Time Machine ALL do the same thing free or the cost of a hard drive. Why pay Amazon $37 a month for 250 gigs of storage when hard drives are so cheap now and Apple has free software solutions? Even a purchase of their TimeCapsule Airport with a Gig of Wireless Storage built in - would pay for itself within the first year? Help me understand why this would be better than Mac.com? Requested feature...

This app is fine (and the price is right) for my kids in college but I needed more comprehensive help (as your post indicates), Try TidyUp. I work with space hogging Multimedia. TidyUp organized enough dups from YEARS of backups - I was able to avoid buying another 500gig HD!

Complicated

I agree. I am a successful writer and am not considered stupid in any circles. Right brained people like myself here in "Hollyweird" are a huge chunk of Apple's market but we generally are not however, interested or willing to spend so much time diddling with setup. The overload of preferences in both DragThing and Butler are no doubt fine for techies and the wonderful folks who write software for the rest of us.…

Duh and Duh'er

Double Duh from me. I'm depressed because Leopard abandoned my beloved Sherlock and I can't find a simple, clean replacement. What were they thinking replacing one clean mini-app with all those stupid widgets cluttering up the Desktop? Why are people expecting me to use DOS-like programs such as "Terminal"? Didn't we leave that behind in 1984? What happened to Apple being user friendly? Come on tech people, if you force us creative types to…

Seen this before?

You overlooked the most important thing! The others apps you mentioned aren't UNIVERSA. I paid for EZ Note X and DEVONnote - and agree they're fine apps - but why haven't they upgraded to an Intel version? They're fairly simple so it shouldn't be too difficult. Sure, they WILL run, but once I experienced the incredible performance improvement with Universal apps - I won't install anything less. So thanks MacItEasy for writing a…

I fail to see the purpose

I used to use Disk Alias and loved it but will it work with Mac intel? I've found that even though non Universal software will run on my intel Mac, it's not worth it when Universal apps are so much faster and smoother.

A bit off the subject but...

AppZapper is a utility that's paid for itself a hundred times over (for me). It's a little app that uninstalls everything, all the hidden files etc. from any application. It's GREAT for apps that dont have uninstallers, like most shareware apps. Good luck!

HUH??? If I wanted to deal with all that - I'd buy a PC. Thanks to the author for a great little app.
