Mac Pilot 2.1.9 (Mac OS X)

So far so good

So far this program has run without problems. Haven't tried all the features yet (that could take a while, there are a lot) but it's definitely nice to have everything in one program instead of having to use 3 or 4. [alert admin]

Shrook 2.52 (Mac OS X)

Good Features

Just downloaded this program to compare it to Vienna, and I gotta say, while I like the features, I'm going to stick to Vienna for one simple reason. Layout. Shrook's 4 column layout might be great on 30" widescreens, but on my 17" iMac it just seems like so much wasted space. The items list column, with previews enabled, looks great...until you try and view the article. Then it has to be pushed over to the side and narrowed so you can't even read the full article titles anymore, much less anything useful from the preview description. If there was a way to switch this program to more of a Mail style layout, with the list of articles in a top pane and the articles themselves opening up below, it would make much more sense and would make this the best newsreader I've tried. As it is though, it's just easier to read other readers. [alert admin]

Comics 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

A good start

This program seems like it has a fairly decent start to build on. The problem is, it's at little more than a starting stage. If all you're looking for is something that's a step up from a text file or excel database listing of your books, then this will make you happy. It's a great way to list everything you've got, enter in some details like inks, pencils, cover art, year, publisher, etc. But for anything approaching seriously collecting the features fall pretty short. And that coming from someone who's no where near a serious collector. To it's benefit, this program LOOKS really nice. The GUI is great, and about as simple as it can be. The cover image view is really nice, especially the ability to drag it around like a dashboard widget so you can see what's underneath on the screen. A+ on the design side of things. This is really where things start to go downhill though. As far as functionality there are a few glaring errors. First and foremost, perhaps one of the most important fields to a collector is CONDITION. Nowhere in this program can you enter the condition of the comics in question. Also, while it would be great to somehow get a realtime update of the current value of the books off the internet, I'm not holding my breath as that seems to be limited to a few high-end (and high priced) Windows Apps. However at least the option of adding a text field for user input prices would be a nice addition. And for even an extra added boost of functionality (making this program actually viable as anything other than freeware) maybe the ability to track changing prices you've entered in some type of bar graph or something. But that's another topic entirely. Another big note is the absurdity of including the websearch capability as a main feature. While it's good in theory, in actual practice it's useless. I don't know where the data is coming from, but a search for "x-men" turned up only 12 issues in the database. That would be like MS Office including a spell checker that was right about 15% of the time. All in all it's not even a feature worth mentioning at this point. This program does show some promise (though to be honest, with little to no competition on the OS X platform, that's not hard) but it's still a long way from being a truly useful App. Let alone something anyone should actually have to pay for. Cabos 0.6.6 (Mac OS X)

Doesn't work for me

I've heard great things about this app. However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it working. There's a "connect" button in the file menu, but no visual clues to let you know if it's trying to connect or really doing anything at all. Since it never changed to say "disconnect" and my search results turned up nothing, I'm assuming it never connected. I played around with the preferences for a while, but not only did I not make progress, I didn't really have any way of knowing if I had made any progress. Some kind of visual cues as to what's actually going on might be nice. Or a support forum that isn't all Japanese. Or some bundled documentation beyond version info. It could be something really simple that I'm just missing, but I have no idea and don't know how to find out. Looks like it's back to Poisoned for me (unfortunately) [alert admin]

iEmulator 1.7.8 (Mac OS X)

Cheap...but

I just purchased and installed the latest version. The interface is nice, the setup is easy, the manual is great and pretty thorough, the price is definitely great compaired to Virtual PC, but the speed is awful. I'm using an iMac G5 2GHz with Tiger 10.4.6, and I set up the program to use Windows 2000 following the manual instructions. It was so slow I was having trouble clicking buttons and icons (my pointer kept jumping over them due to lag) I followed the manual's steps to optimize performance (including disabling audio and unnecessary programs) and this brough the speed up to useable, but still painfully so. As an example it took about 15 minutes to install Firefox. Even just opening windows (control panel, windows explorer, etc) took somewhere around 30 seconds. I'm going to try and track down a different version of Windows to see if there's any difference, but as it stands, even at $30, it feels like a waste of money. [alert admin]

NewsYouCanUse 2.7 (Mac OS X)

.

When I came across this program I was thrilled! Until I tried to use it. DOES NOT work in Tiger as some of the other comments have pointed out. Since this doesn't seem to be supported anymore I would suggest looking for RSSMenu instead. [alert admin]

RSS Menu 1.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Brilliant!

This is exactly what I was looking for. Simple, attractive, easy and most importantly IT WORKS, which seems to be rare for dock/menu readers in Tiger. [alert admin]

SlashDock 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Not bad, just not outstanding either

Worked decently enough for the first day, after that though it just said Application Not Responding when I clicked on it. The only real support seems to be through email, no troubleshooting FAQs or anything, so I just downloaded a different reader instead. The biggest plus is that it would work in Tiger. Drawbacks: - Forces the use of some fairly terrible icons - New/Updated notification didn't seem to work. It would show an article new one minute, not new the next, and then new again a while later. - Adding/Organizing the feed list was a little tedious, but still workable. Overall it seems to be one of the few simple dock/menu readers that'll work on Tiger and it does a decent job. It just wasn't outstanding enough for me to bother to try and fix. [alert admin]
